How Many Calories Does That Plastic Add?

November 20th, 2008 @ 6:19 pm by Mrs. Lemonade

{source}

I’ve been really watching my weight and working really hard to get in shape and lose the post-smoking weight. A while ago I concocted a little program for myself built on tons of research I’d done online and with nutritionists. I work out (almost) everyday and restrict my calories. The restricting of the calories has been pretty easy for me, as I have relied on prepackaged meals (the horrors!) for lunch and dinner about 5 times a week. Think I’ve been having fancy meals delivered? Think again my friends.

The Super T has been providing my healthy yummy meals via Lean Cuisine. I love my LC meals—especially the Spa Cuisine ones that are made with brown rice or whole grain pasta (yes, Slynnro, I’m working on going gluten free… baby steps). So when Mr. Lemonade forwarded me this link from our friends at The Consumerist I was a bit freaked out. According to The Consumerist:

Lean Cuisine is recalling 900,000 pounds of its entrees after “several consumers” reported finding blue plastic in the product.

Yeah, we have those Chicken Mediterraneans in our freezer right now. Awesome.

Have you found an easy way to count your calories in the months leading up to your wedding?

Thanks for posting that article :) I too eat TONS of LCs and I saw the teaser for that on the news but didn’t stay up late enough to watch it.

Its not news, but I swear…
1. the fiber
2. the 30-day shred
:)
Just be careful you’re drinking enough water - those LC and WW meals have *sooo* much sodium in them!

Oh, this brings back memories! A long time ago I had this (male) roommate who was obsessed with his weight. Our freezer looked EXACTLY like that. :p

I like how they specify that the plastic is blue…

My fiance and I swear by http://www.myfooddiary.com. Its an online journal that tracks your diet (calories, fiber, sodium, etc.) and exercise. I lost 4 lbs in 2.5 wks and he lost 6.5 just by being concious of what we’re eating and how much we workout!

As someone who is committed to looking my very best on my wedding day, I recently dedicated myself to yoga 3 times/week, a couple of days of cardio/week and mega-dietary changes.

This may seem kind of extreme, but I’ve already seen results in 1 week.

1. 30 grams of fiber a day. It’s hard to do, but it can be done. You’ll feel more full doing this too.

2. No white rice or pasta :( Seriously, only whole grains in keeping with #1 (which you are already doing)

3. Processed foods: gone! That means no Kit Kats, Cheeze-Its, or any of those other yummy completely pointless foods that make us feel so good in the moment and so bad afterward.

4. Fitday.com. This online tracking software tracks your calories in, calories out, fat/carbs/protein, weight goal, nutrition status. I enter every single thing that passes my lips into this and every bit of exercise I do. Sometimes the mere thought of having to go to the website keeps me from eating!

5. Yoga– just say yes to yoga. It speeds your metabolism, tones you, centers your mind and sometimes even makes you sweat. Yoga rules!

But seriously, in *1 week* I went from trying on a dress that was an inch from zipping to it zipping up easily today…. in 1 week!

I’m going to be continuing to track my progress in my blog for those who are interested.

I don’t know if this is crazy, but I never microwave those meals in their original containers. Something about nuking plastic for 8 minutes unsettles me. So I microwave on Corelle plates instead!

Sparkpeople.com has really good tracking tools as well as tips and articles. You can create your own food plan or let them make one for you.

Lemonade, I totally admire your efforts but like meatball said, those things are full of sodium…

sodium=salt=not good for your heart=makes you retain water=makes you puffy!

take the weekend to cook a couple of dishes, fill some of your plastic containers and freeze them. Eat lots of veggies and fruit and plenty of water!

Good luck!

there are some good/healthy gluten free frozen dinners at whole foods…maybe they don’t have as much sodium…I can’t remember the name, but I know one of them is salmon, and it might be something like ‘organic bistro’!

Dieting by far is the hardest thing to do but it is the most rewarding once you meet your goal. It is seriously a life changing event between changing your eating and exercising habits to losing a lot of weight and feeling good. Once you get the hang of it and get on the right track it will come easier. The first couple months are the hardest. You really have to come up with a routine. Also you need support whether you get it from friends or family or complete stranger either way it is a must. It helps build that will power and when you are thinking of having to tell someone that you ate a candy bar you will dread it and not even want to put that on your conscience. It is actually a funny little game you end up playing.

Also if you can’twrap your self around going to a gym , you can exercise doing your everyday routine. When you go to the store or to work park in the furthest stall so you have to walk. Also after your done shopping make one more lap around the store before paying.

ASk your fiance to go for a walk or a neighbor. If you don’t have a dog get one and they will be a great companion.

I mean these are just small ways to get some cardio into your day.

Now if you don’t have problem on the exercising part of it all then make sure you are doing different kind of workouts instead of one constant. For example one day do yoga or pilates to stretch the muscles the next day do step aerobics or kick boxing to get some cardio in and then the day after that lift some weights to build the muscle. You want to rotate it so you don’t pull a muscle or over work something. The way you build muscle is by damaging it and letting it HEAL. Don’t let anyone tell you that by gaining muscle and burning fat that you are going to be heavier. What is bigger a pound of fat or a pound of muscle? Think about that.

Now back to the lean cuisines. I have made that mistake and ate lean cuisines all the time because they were easy and somewhat healthy but they are full of sodium and that is unhealthy it is full of sodium making you retain water and is bad for your heart. I think the best thing to do if you are a busy person is first don’t bring processed food into the house. Only buy fresh fruts and vegetables and fish and chicken. Spend a day or every night before the day of work to make up all your meals. That way you know what you are eating. If you are a soda or coffee drinker replace it with water and if you are like me and strive for a taste put crytal lite in each bottle of water you drink a day. The best way to get you through an addiction is replace it with something you love but that is healthy. Water is assential to a diet.

Next make sure you are taking a vitamin daily so you can obtain all the vitamins you are not able to eat during the day because after a while your appetit will shrink just by eating lighter.

I am also a pasta eater and white rice eater. Again with this find something you like just as much but that is on the healther side. Try switching to whole grains,

My favorite part about eating healthier is how good full feels unlike being full with a burger and fries and where you think you are going to explode because you are so heavy and acidy. It really is a great feeling and when you step on the scale and you lose more than one pound it is a feeling of accomplishment each time.

I am sure you have a goal weight for your wedding day and I have a feeling you don’t have much weight to lose but even if you are naturally a skinny person all this should still apply.

I am sorry I just went on and on but I am a wedding planner and I have given all this information to brides who stress over losing that 20 or 30 pounds before their wedding and I even become their personal trainer and weight coach also. So, if you need a person to talk to each day to help me to your goal you can email me at MzzzQueenBee@yahoo.com
and if you have a question about your wedding planning to or need to releive stress go right ahead also I know my way around.

Good Luck!!!!

I love the Spa Lean Cuisines!!! Try the South Beach Diet ones and Kashi too, they have a great lemongrass checken. They are high in sodium, but I try to eat a big green salad with them and hope it helps some.

After consulting with a doctor, most people do not have to worry as much about their sodium intake unless they already have high vlood pressure and/or are pre-disposed to heart disease. In fact I have very low blood pressure and my doctor actually recommended I increase my sodium intake each day. Just stay hydrated. As for the puffiness I cannot really comment on that. I think most docs and dieticians would agree that the most important thing is that you get your heart rate up (exercise) regularly and eat 3-5 (as close to 5 as possible ) servings of fruits/vegetables a day. Good luck!!

Along with working out everyday (cardio and weights, light weights will not bulk you up), I also eat 5 small meals a day, eat only whole grain but stop eating carbs after 5pm, drink lots of water, and eat vegetarian three days a week. Just as long as you still have protein (like meat, tofu, beans, eggs) with each meal you won’t feel hungry. And after learning to be conscious about what you’re eating, you won’t feel so bad about having a piece of candy once in a while.

Just be careful about all that processed food. It’s really not good for you, and doesn’t give you nearly enough nutrients.

Hmmm...

Lean Cuisine meals or okay…but they were never able to fill me. You should try the new frozen meals Koshi just put out…I believe they have about 11 different varieties. They are filling, delicious and a good source of protein and fiber (which will help boost your metabolism), plus you won’t have to worry about the consumer recall!

As a doctor and regular eater of lean cuisine, I feel the need to comment on this post. The daily recommendation of sodium intake is about 2.4g. Most lean cuisine entrees have about 600-700mg, so it should be fine unless you eat 4 of them a day. Also, excess salt can be harmful if you already have high blood pressure, kidney disease, or other health conditions, but for normal people with well-working kidneys, the excess sodium just get excreted by the kidneys as long as they’re hydrated. I agree with Sarah, it’s all about how much calories you put in, how much you burn with exercise, and creating a net calorie deficit. I say, whatever helps you limit your calorie intake, stick to it! There are a lot of good advice on this thread, such as eliminating processed food completely, eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies, but it’s not always easy to practice them if you have a busy lifestyle.

I also love sparkspeople! Lost 10#s since joining it.

I love sparkpeople too! I’ve lost 13 pounds by using sparkpeople to monitor what I eat and working out 4-5 times a week.
