FBIL Fondue’s Wedding

November 21st, 2008 @ 10:29 am by Ms Fondue

I’ve mentioned that Mr. Fondue’s eldest brother (and one of our best men) got engaged just days before we did. They were married this past summer in an intimate ceremony. They had been planning a lengthier engagement, but due to some unforeseen circumstances they decided to pull together a wedding in a matter of a month!

Everyone in the family pitched in to help. Mr. Fondue helped with usher duties. Their other brother was the DJ/MC at the reception. And me? I was photographer/day-of-coordinator.

I will preface this by saying I am, in no way, a photographer. I am an admirer of photography, but that’s it. I’ve had no formal training, and I don’t even own anything other than a little Canon point-and-shoot. So, when they asked me to be their photographer, I was more than a little apprehensive. Especially since it was to be in a church, and churches are notorious for bad lighting. I was freaking out up until the wedding, though Mr. Fondue did his best to calm me down by reminding me that no one else in the family even owned a camera, so without me, they wouldn’t have any pictures. (No pressure.)

I will say that, while I had the utmost respect for wedding photographers before this wedding, I would now multiply that by about twenty. It was an extremely stressful day, worrying I was going to miss key shots (all the shots of her coming down the aisle were blurry) and fretting over the bad lighting in the church (I made everyone move outside for formals). It probably didn’t help that I was also acting as pseudo-coordinator, making sure the topper was placed on the cake and that the best man had the rings.

I then spent weeks editing the photos, using the previously posted about Totally Rad Actions. Here are some of the ones I was happy with!

While they were super happy with the photos, my lesson was learned: this is not something that I will ever attempt to do again. I think if the situation were to arise, I would just offer to help pay for a professional photographer.

Have you ever been asked to photograph the wedding of a friend or family member?

I think the photos turned out great! :) Don’t be so hard on yourself Miss Fondue… like Mr. F said without you they wouldn’t have had a photographer, looks like you got some amazing shots of their special day!

Great job! You are a way better photographer than I - HELLO you even had software to edit the pictures! Don’t be so hard on yourself those are amazing, especially since without you they would have had no pictures at all :)

Those are great shots and even if those are the only ones you think are worth displaying, I bet that the happy couple are forever grateful for these few amazing shots on their wedding day.

They turned out great!!! :)

Yes, I have shot a few. It is really stressful, and since I’m a guest I often don’t get to enjoy myself or the wedding, but am still happy to help. The best situation was this summer; they hired a photographer for the ceremony and reception, so I just took pictures of the bride getting ready and all of the Macedonian pre wedding traditions. I was going to be at the house anyway, and really enjoyed shooting those.

Aren’t the totally rad actions like magic? My best friends idiot photography decided to drink coffee in the lobby instead of getting shots of her getting ready, so I attempted to capture the moments for her with my little point and shoot. They definitely weren’t manazine worthy, but I think it helped capture what the morning was like for her.

The family thinks I’m being humble when I say I’m not a great photographer, I only have an expensive camera. It’s not humility, it’s the truth! I’ve agreed to do two weddings, one where the reservist photographer was called up to active duty, and one that kept getting moved up due to the groom’s orders for Afghanistan. The outdoor one was “eh,” the indoor one was terrible, and all I could do was apologize. They seemed satisfied, but man, I sure wouldn’t have been.
