A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

November 21st, 2008 @ 12:44 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

If that is the case, then Mr. Spring Roll and I will have 324,000 words from our guests. We are placing a disposable camera at each of our twelve guest tables. A card will be laid next to the camera, explaining that the guests should take photos, and pass the camera around. When the 27 exposures are finished, the guests will be asked to place the camera in a return basket. Sister Spring Roll used this idea at her wedding and it was a huge hit; it also made for some great photos.

I can’t wait to see the photos our guests take. In addition to having great photos from our guests, it gives us a chance to see photos before the professional ones are finished.

How will you encourage your guests to share photos with you?

I used Mrs. Lemon’s photo upload idea to Flickr…I had a whopping ONE guest actually upload their pictures. Guess my family isn’t as up with the times as I thought, lol.

We created a shutterfly page - I am crossing my fingers that people will take initiative and post! My cousin had disposables at her wedding and most of them were unusable/silly shots so we are (hoping) this turns out better. Good Luck Miss SR!!

Sounds like it worked at your sister’s wedding, so maybe you don’t need to worry - but I’ve talked to many couples who did this and ended up with almost no photos or no usable ones. I suggest asking particular friends and family to make a special effort to use the cameras. They’ll get the ball rolling with the other guests, or at least you’ll know that some of the cameras will be used.

Are you planning to get them developed through a service which will make you a CD or even put them online for you? I use Snapfish for digital prints and they do a great job - I think they do film development for a reasonable rate - it cost me $10 the last time I got pictures devolped (5 years ago…)

I would be careful about that, I’ve heard lots of bad stories of some people getting a bit drunk and taking lewd pictures. And if you try to develop those at certain places like Wal-Mart if there is one naughty picture they keep the whole thing.

I did this at my wedding and it worked out great. I’ll admit not all the pictures turned out but we did get alot of great shots that we wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. It was worth doing alone for how cute the kids were with them. At one point there was a group of 5 or 6 kids following my husband and myself around with the cameras like little paparazzi during the reception. I heard the horror stories some people mentioned about lewd pictures but we didn’t get anything like that.

I love this idea, and would totally do it for a smaller wedding, but I wouldn’t want to deal with 25 cameras.

I think how well this works is really dependent on your group of friends… if it was just my friends and family I’m sure we’d get some great shots, but my fiance’s friends are notorious for taking lewd drunken pictures on these cameras at weddings! So we’ll be skipping the disposables and instead asking people to post their digital pics to an online album.

I’m going to take advantage of the digital pics, since most of my friends and family, even my grandparents!, have them now. I’m going to put blank CD-R is self-addressed, stamped envelopes with a cute note and have a friend hand them out to people with cameras. That way, they can just burn their pics and mail them off. My family is pretty tech savvy, so hopefully we’ll get a good return. Since I taught my grandfather how to burn CD’s last year, even he can participate!
