The Honeymooners

November 22nd, 2008 @ 1:58 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

One of the things about the wedding I’m most excited about is the honeymoon. After all of the planning, stressing, and running around, I’m looking forward to just being able to kick back with my mister and enjoy married life.

My parents have generously offered to pay for our honeymoon as a wedding present. How could I say no to that?!

While that is incredibly awesome, it also means we need to stick with a modest budget and plan something simple (not that we didn’t have a budget before, I just don’t want to spend my parents out of house and home!).

Plane tickets are expensive. Like, reeeaaaallly expensive. So what does that mean for us?

Road trip!!!

Yes, Mr. Powder Puff and I will not be flying to some exotic locale for some R&R after the wedding. Nope, we’ll be driving up north. Waaayyy north. To the UP (upper peninsula, for the non-Michiganders). We’ve decided to go to the beautiful Mackinac Island for our honeymoon getaway, and I could not be more excited, because seriously, Michigan in the summer is gorgeous.

I love me some lighthouses. And fudge. And a no cars allowed law, and horse-drawn carriages. Which is great, because Mackinac Island has all of those. Here’s where we’ll be staying:

Gorgeous, right? And really relaxing.

And since there are no cars allowed on the island, here’s how we’ll be getting around:

I can’t wait!

Is anyone else taking a local honeymoon?

I love Mackinac Island. Some of the b&bs are worth staying at too. Really gorgeous. Perhaps go to some of the other UP destinations, too? Tequamenon falls are supposed to be spectacular, as are the pictured rocks. Have fun!

For our honeymoon we headed to the middle of Minnesota. It was great as it was the major off season so all the shops were super excited to see us and we got a lot of free stuff for being honeymooners.

We also swung by the Cities and had a great time there as it got ready for Halloween.

We took a road trip to Mackinac this summer! It was our first time visiting. We stayed in St. Ignance, right on Lake Huron. If you are in St. Ignance, there is a really great diner called Java Joes that was seriously amazing, and had great prices! We liked it so much that we wrote a google review.

Also, check beforehand to see which day of the week they offer the sunset cruise under the bridge! We loved it. :)

LOOVE Mackinac! I’m originally from Michigan, and briefly entertained the idea of getting married on Mackinac. We ended up opting for Boston instead (where we live), but I’m still a little sad we didn’t do Mackinac. AND how awesome you are staying in the Grand Hotel! I keep telling my fiance that we need to go to there, but I don’t think he really understands how gorgeous upper Michigan is, since he’s East Coast born and bred and has never been there…I miss it!

Oohhh… that looks great!

I think local honeymoons are a great idea, especially because travel is so expensive now. We honeymooned in Greece (which was awesome), and our plane tickets were nearly half the cost of the trip! Ouch! What we found is that a making a big trip for a honeymoon is kind of pointless - all we wanted to do was relax and spend time together. We’re usually busybodies, seeing and trying everything we can. But after the weddding hoopla, we just wanted time alone with each other, a piece of sun, and a book. We made a big trip because we planned on starting a family immediatly after the wedding (we’re preganant with a honeymoon baby now!) and we knew it would be our last chance to go abroad for a looong time. But if that weren’t the case, we would have done something mellow and closer (and cheaper).

Now that’s my biggest recommendation to newly engaged couples - just do something you’ll both enjoy and will find relaxing. The important part about a honeymoon is spending the uninterupted time together! (aww…)

Have a wonderful time!

We’re not planning on a big honeymoon, as we’re paying quite a bit to fly his family to the wedding, but if we do anything, it’ll be local. The pictures on this post make me wish ‘local’ for us was Michigan too!!!

We thought pretty seriously about the Traverse City area because I absolutely love it. However, I vacationed up there for 18 years (once every summer) until it was suddenly announced that the people we’d been faithfully renting our cabin from were selling. As weird as it sounds, I still don’t have closure about the whole thing, so I wanted our honeymoon to be about us making memories, not me thinking back about my childhood.

So, we’re probably going to go somewhere on the east coast.

How exciting for you! Mackinac Island is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing honeymoon. (I may be a bit biased because that’s where I’m getting married) There is nothing like Mackinac, especially staying at the Grand. I’m envious!

I looooove Mackinac!!! Used to visit family in St. Ignace. And I totally love Petosky for that main street feeling - great shops, quaint locale!

We’re planning on going to Hawaii for our Honeymoon, but Alaska Airlines ALWAYS has deals flying from Anchorage to HI so it probably wont end up being as expensive as some things.

Wow, I never thought I’d find a honeymoon twin! :p The FH and I are SUPER pumped to be spending the week after our wedding wandering around our favorite haunts in Northern MI, including Mackinac! If you get bored on the Island and want to take a day trip, let me know– I know lots of fun places to visit and get good food ;) (Then again, how could you get bored up there?)

we’re going the some local B&Bs in 2 towns about 1.5 hrs away each…we just want to spend the time together (*cough* in bed *cough*) I didn’t want to be drugged out on travel meds, but we will be planning a trip to Australia about a year later to “kick off” the baby planning I think we’ll be more prepared for the trip w/o wedding madness

I think I might be staying local as well. Things are just so crazy that I don’t think I could get away for a very long honeymoon and probably couldn’t afford it as well. I live in Colorado so we will probably going to Veil for a week or so.
