Walk this Way…

November 24th, 2008 @ 9:33 am by Mrs. Champagne

So I mentioned things got a little crazy before my trip to Colorado. Suddenly I realized that this was the only opportunity I would have to get things out to Vail without having to ship them. I quickly thought of any last minute DIY projects I could squeeze into my schedule before my flight. I thought about our church doors and how pretty dark red letters would look in the snow. So like many bees, I ordered wood letters from (16″, Times New Roman, 1/4 thick) Craft Cuts . This size is large enough to make a statement but won’t completely take over the church doors.Walk this Way... : wedding decor diy vail 012

I used rather large blooms for the silk flowers so I painted our initials the same color as the flowers to keep the color throughout the entire letter. One tube of FolkArt Acrylic paint (from AC Moore) worked great, and for a few bucks it made a big difference.

If there’s one tip I could recommend, I would say that it’s much easier to push down on the hot glue if there is fabric between your finger and the glue. I cut some of the flowers into small pieces and wrapped those around the base of the flowers I glued to the letter. This way, I prevented burns and avoided any green stems from showing.

I’m still trying to figure out a way to hang the “K”, but you get the general idea. For about 30 bucks ($25 for the letters, $2 for paint, and $3 for a cheapo mini glue gun and glue sticks), I think it’ll add a nice pop of color in the midst of what I hope is a snowy night!

I managed to drop by our church for one last look before the big day. Here’s where our initials will hang. Now if I could only figure out a way to cover up that ugly sign on the stairs!

Honestly, this will be one of the only “decorations” at our church for the ceremony. Do you have any other cheap ways to add some simple decor to your ceremony location?

Just an idea…I wonder if you could use those non-stick removable hooks to hang the letters invisibly? Make a loop on the back of the letters and hang them from the hook. They would look like they’re ‘floating’ on the door! Then you remove the hook and it leaves no evidence.

They look great! :) I’m going to make ours for the interior of our ceremony location. Instead of doing the letters stand alone, I’m going to sew or glue the flowers to make initials on a fabric panel (flag, I guess) a la Martha Stewart. I’m not sure if you would feel weird about having initial decor both inside and out, but you could do a lot with different fabrics for an interior application! :) If you don’t want to do initials, you could do hearts or some kind of pattern. I’ve been meaning to get on this project, maybe I can get to it before the holidays.

Thoughts on covering up the ugly sign: cover it in white paper/fabric (to obscure the letters) and hang a festive wreath over it; or hang a sign over it that says “Welcome to our wedding!” or “Champagne-Champ Wedding.”

These are lovely!! We had an outdoor wedding.. so I didn’t have a way to incorporate these.. but I’ve always had a love for this diy project!! The only decor we had at our ceremony was rose petals and i made flower strands from fish line that had silk orchid blooms and crystal beads, and we hung them on either side of where we were standing at the ceremony.

That’s a good idea! It’s tough because the K needs two anchors with a ribbon and the D only needs one! It’s these kind of decisions that I mull over in my sleep- soo silly!!

Our ceremony decor was copper buckets of flowers tied to every other aisle chair. Since we were doing candle centerpieces we splurged a little to do these buckets with our florist. But then we reused them on the cocktail tables, placecard table, sweetheart table, etc. They looked great.

For something cheaper you could also do paper cones hung with ribbon along the aisle and fill them with baby’s breath. Dark red paper cones would look great with baby’s breath!

Love these! One question (we are doing this for our wedding too, albeit with smaller letters cos I am not confident that we can pull this off) - errr how do attach the ribbons to the letters?
