The Elusive Q

November 24th, 2008 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Lemonade

I’m a BIG fan of monograms. Ever since I was a wee one my mom dressed me up in little jumpers, bibs, sweaters, and the like that proudly sported my initials. My collection has continued to grow over the years and now includes totes, purses, and many housewares. I’ve stopped ordering monogrammed items for myself, as in less than five short months, my monogram will change. However, that hasn’t stopped me from perusing in-store monograms, especially since I’m planning on putting our personal stamp on many elements throughout W day. Lately this has proved to be much more difficult than in the past.

You see, my current last name begins with the lovely and common ‘C’. Items emblazoned with the third letter in the alphabet are pretty easy to come by. I’ve found plenty of ‘C’ notebooks, candles, etc. to keep me happy. As I’ve been getting the gifties together for our bridal party, helpers, and parents, I’ve had no problem finding various ‘L’s, ‘M’s, ‘K’s and the like. What I haven’t been able to easily come across are inexpensive items logoed with the first letter of our soon-to-be joint last name, the elusive Q. I don’t know if you’ve ever looked, but I challenge you to hit the dollar section of Michaels. You know, the one where there are tons of awesome finds, many of which are logoed with various letters. Stop by there and spend a few minutes looking for a post it pad, iron-on, pack of tissues, ANYTHING for that matter, with a Q on it. If you find one you get a gold star. I have yet to earn any stars as far as this matter is concerned.

On the one hand I view this as one more way that we can be unique, and when I do come across some random ‘Q’ item, it’s that much more exciting. And to be honest, it’s not like I can’t just order pretty much any item I want from Etsy, eBay, or a host of other online retailers just waiting to customize their wares for us.

Yet, on the other hand, it irritates the hell out of me. I mean, seriously people, ‘Q’ is a letter just like any other. I say we end this discrimination and work towards greater alphabetical equality!

Is there anything about your new last name that irks you?

I agree!! My last name starts with a Q also (hint, name of a bird, also name of a former VP but with different spelling, ugh) and while I love it I kind of look forward to my new last name which starts with a B. It seems that Qs are often forgotten. Good luck in your search for Q items and let us know if you ever find any!

I’m not as into monograms, so I don’t have the same problem but kind of similar… I’m going from a very rare last name to a very very common one and it bothers me. As a kid I would have done anything to avoid the embarassment of correcting the pronounciation (it isn’t really that tricky, people just make it complicated). But, now I like the fact that it is unique and I’m having a hard time getting excited about the new name. All that I’ve come up with that’s good about the new one is that it is shorter so now I won’t get lazy halfway through my signature (my current signature ends in a wavy scribble).

I hate my husband’s last name. I wasn’t going to change — not because of his last name, but because as a woman in science with publications out under my own last name, typically name changes are rare. But my husband pitched a fit, so I hyphenated. Legally, I’m both, but I never use his, because it is ALWAYS MISPRONOUNCED, and in a derogatory fashion. It only has one R, but people pronounce it like it has two R’s, and that takes it from not having a meaning, to having a negative meaning with which I would not want to be associated. I HATE it. Plus, my own last name is so simple and easy and has never, ever been mispronounced. Hate, hate, hate it.

The best part is that at our own wedding, my husband’s family Rabbi, who married my husband, did the unveiling after his father’s death, etc… MISPRONOUNCED HIS LAST NAME! Ha. But now MY family all pronounces it the way they heard the Rabbi say it… incorrectly. I think I am going to refuse to respond to the incorrect pronunciation.

Um, yes, my new last name bothers me! It is CONSTANTLY mispronounced and misspelled. Whenever anyone asks me to say my last name, I just spell it out instead. Also, our name includes a “V” and an “N” (two of the most mistaken sounds ever ~ “Did you say ‘B as in boy’ or ‘V as in Victor’??” “Was that ‘M’ like Mom or ‘N’ as in Nancy??”) right after each other. So even if I DO spell out the name, people still don’t get it right. Another annoying thing is that somehow, people like to insert an imaginary “H” into our name. Our name starts with “SCR”, and people like to change that to “SCHR” or “SHR”. We actually just received a wedding present with our last name spelled incorrectly, because of that darn “H”! Ugh.

Check the clearance section - there are always lots of Qs Zs and so on.

Oh and as for my ‘to-be’ initials, well as soon as I marry my honey, I get GAS.

I can find you a pocket mirror with a Q embroidered on it. Only $5! I just got K for myself and A, E, and L for my sisters. ^_^

My new intials are TNA…oh my. Hopefully you guys can figure out the horrible phrase that is associated with these letters. I didn’t want to change it, but I’m used to it now, thankfully! It’s a good source of laughter for most, too. haha!

OH YES! I can’t pronounce my soon-to-be-surname! Its Welsh, and has a weird inflection to the sound that I can not master. My in-laws threaten to sit me down with a lot of liquor and practise until I get it. lol

haha, I bought some ‘Q’ cards on clearance for a friend forever ago…I guess that’s why they don’t order as many, so they don’t have to put them on clearance ;) Too bad I never got around to giving them to her, and now we’ve lost touch, doh

My new last name will be Shaver, as in something used to remove unwanted hair. My initials to be are “BEGS,” as in “She begs you not to make fun of her name.” At least he knows I’m not marrying him for his name…

My last name is Speyer, which most people on the West Coast pronounce incorrectly as “SPAY-er” (it’s SPY-er). That makes me Kat SPAY-er to some, and I sound like a perverse veterinarian. Whoops.

I had a very, very shy and quiet lab partner in freshman biology, whose last name began with a Q. The only off-topic conversation we ever had was that first day:

Me: Hi, I’m Sarah A…
Him: Hi, I’m T…Q…
Me: That’s an unusual name. Is it difficult to get things monogrammed?
Him: Yes.

My current last name starts with a Q, and I’m sad to lose it *if* I change my name to my fiance’s last name. I’ve grown to love being a Q - it’s so unique!

my current last name starts with a ‘Q’ as well! Funny to see so many on the boards with it as it really is uncommon. I’m actually kind of excited to loose the ‘Q’ for that reason and have a much more common “M”….Good Luck in your quest though…I know how difficult it is!

I don’t really have anything special about the first letter in any of my names, but I am sad to be losing a letter in my last name. My last name now (maiden) has a “Z” in the middle and I love it! My new last name will be a more ‘boring’ name and not very pretty sounding. It actually gave my FH a nickname in high school of which he is not proud. Also, my initials are MLB like major league baseball! New initials? MLL. Bleah.

I’m going from the oh so common S to a Y, so I know exactly where you are coming from. The funny thing is my maiden name is very, very rare (like anyone with this last name in the country is likely related to me) to a last name that is very, very common. So, I’m kinda sad to be losing my unique-ness. But not sad enough to keep my awful maiden name. :-)

There are two things that make me sad about changing my name. I don’t mind the name itself, but my signature will be much less pretty, and my initials go from VAL (short for my name, Valerie!) to VAH. :( My initials were cool!

I will be going from a very French last name to and even more French last name. It’s not bad enough that people can’t spell my first name, I have to always spell out both first and last. But my future last name will have to be spelled out too! I swear the only people who can even pronounce it are those who live in France, and his family!

I have a very uncommon name, and have always been irked that people can’t pronounce it. Its Wro, but people always want to drop the R not the W…umm hello people, how do pronounce Wright??? exactly! So I’m going from that to Sleight, spelled Sleight but pronounce slate. So everyone always thinks its Sleight, as in “sleight of hand”. At least I’m used to people mispronouncing my last name already!

My new last name is ten letters long - that’s double what it is now. It begins with an R. Not bad, except that my first name, Jennifer, ENDS with an R….which means when you say my to-be full name aloud, it sounds like there’s no R at the beginning of my new last name. If I didn’t hate Jen and Jenny so much, I’d consider shortening my name!

Let’s see. . . my fiance’s last name is long, difficult to spell, not that easy to pronounce, and yes, we have to do the “B as in boy”, “D as in Dog” thing.
PS My maiden name. . . Smith!

I’m going from “F” to “W” and even though my new last name is longer, it’s a compound of two VERY common words while my current last name seems to challenge people. So all in all, it’s a win for me. The only problem is that I love my initials now (SLF), but don’t care for my new monogram (SFW). Oh well.

My current last name is Graves… think back to elementary school= “Do you live in a graveyard?” Better yet, now I work in health care. I hate walking into patient rooms and them seeing my last name on my badge. It just seems like a bad omen!

Thank goodness, I am going to a nice, normal last name that starts with an R, isn’t a noun, and is rarely mispronounced.
