Well peeps, I have a confession to make. I murdered my hair.
Ok, so technically it isn’t dead. It may in fact be healthier than ever since I had most of it hacked skillfully off by a certified hairsassin.
I’ve had long hair since I grew out my last “bob” during freshman year of college. Like many of you, I let my hair grow for the wedding, and while I loved the length of my locks, and how they would hold “Jessica Simpson curls” I was also really tired of long-hair maintenance and upkeep. I didn’t like constantly having to brush and de-tangle my hair, and the fact that I was simply too lazy to do anything but ponytail it 90% of the time made me feel sloppy and lazy.
Here’s me and Mrs. Avocado outside a Seattle sushi joint the week before her wedding, an occasion I actually saw fit to “style” for:
After the wedding, I kept saying I was going to get my hair cut off. On the one hand, I didn’t want to be a walking stereotype. On the other, I really wanted something drastically different.
I’ve never had REAALLLY short hair. For some reason, my parents always gave my sisters boy cuts and left my hair long. At the time, I was happy, because my sisters’ short hair meant I got to call them “boy hair” while feeling like goldilocks:
But now I wanted a turn! Of course, Mr. CP was resistant, but he has to admit that the end result isn’t as bad (Read: Masculine?) as he was worried it would be. Check out my new ’do. I just looooooove it!
I didn’t go this way immediately. A few weeks after the honeymoon I went to my stylist and told her I wanted an ultra-short cut because I was tired of using flat-irons and curlers, especially because I bike-commute to work. She told me that short-short hair wasn’t going to make it easier to prevent helmet-head and that I should try something much shorter that still allowed me to pull it back. Then, she said if it didn’t work for me, we could take it shorter. This is what she came up with:
I actually really loved this style, and I could have kept it this way for a while, but I still wanted to go shorter. About 6 weeks after that cut, I went back in for a foil and a trim and ended up with a shorter, shaped bob. It just didn’t work for me.
You can tell I’m not happy, but it’s mostly because I got a cold and I felt like crap. I also didn’t style my hair, so it looks worse for my laziness…
My stylist and I both agreed that I didn’t love the cut because I had my heart set on super-short. I wanted something that didn’t get in the way of my facial features and let them speak for themselves. I brought a print-out of inspiration photos, et voila… No more hair in the way of my profile!
And despite my worries, this style is very easy to maintain… it just needs a flat brush, a hair dryer, and a little styling product. It also makes my head feel great!
