Workin’ on My Fitness

November 26th, 2008 @ 3:18 pm by Miss Snapdragon

I want to go from this:

to THIS:

I am perfectly happy with my current weight. However, I am NOT BUFF, and I WANT TO BE BUFF. Though I love Pammy-poo, she sits at a desk all day and does not come across as a strong, in-shape kind of gal.

Let me interrupt myself to say I am sure Jenna Fischer has a banging bod underneath her Office-wear, however the picture above illustrates my point nevertheless.

I also work at a desk for a goodly part of my day, and I am using our wedding as an excuse to put a bee in my bonnet to get in shape. I also turned 30 this year, and supposedly your body has a MUCH harder time maintaining strength once you hit this age threshhold. Although I hear you will have much more success if you have been one of those superwomen who have worked out since they were age two, I figure that it’s never too late to start. Exercise and eating healthfully is always a positive thing…..

So that’s what I’m doing.

Since August 1, I have been adhering to Weight Watchers [mostly] faithfully, and I have become a runner. I have been running between 12-18 miles per week, which I recognize is less than a lot of people, but it’s a ton of running for me!! This week I stepped it up to running 3.5 miles at one go, and I also started the 100 push-up challenge as of today.

I feel better than I’ve felt in a long time. I’ve lost ten pounds. And if I don’t get plenty of fruits/vegetables/water in a given day, I feel like crap! My body is waking up, and it feels great.

What celebrity has your ideal wedding day body?

Hi Ms. Snapdragon! Great job on moving forward on your fitness goals! Please don’t think I’m trying to give unwarranted advice…I just get so excited talking about fitness…my wonderful guy, who is a martial arts instructor and fitness trainer (and also studying to get his degree in Physical Therapy), turned me onto an awesome program he found on-line called Crossfit. He and many of his students and clients have seen really great results by doing these exercises and best of all, they can be adapted for any fitness level and most workouts only take about 20 minutes. They have a website that provides a daily workout–Crossfit.com–which includes built-in rest days. Neither my sweetie nor I are currently affiliated with Crossfit beyond using their workouts as a model for our own and for conditioning students/clients at the martial arts school, but I am a firm believer in their approach (and tend to tell anyone who’s willing to listen about it!). We believe so much in this program that we are currently saving up to obtain training certification through them (vs. a plethora of other certifying bodies out there). You just might want to swing by and check them out just for fun! I wish you all the best and continued success in your buffness goals!! Go get ‘em Ms. Snapdragon! :)

Wow! You lost 10 pounds, thats great! I’ve been trying to find ways to lose weight and I found push ups are really effective. I never heard about the 100 push up challange. Thanks for informing us! I think I’m going to do it :)

12 to 18 miles a week? Thats awesome! I thought I was super cool with 6 to 9 miles a week! I agree, I want to be buff and sexy too, need to stop procrastinating and start the 100 push up challenge.

Good for you, Snappy! Its no secret I’m working on my fitness too - via the 30-day shred and moderate eating. But I may try out Kat’s recommended crossfit now too!

How did you teach yourself to be a runner? I’m dying to know… its so daunting!

@Miss Meatball: I am just starting the 30 day shred (shaking things up a bit!) I didn’t expect that a 20 minutes workout would kick my booty so much! I am about due to change up my routine so I might check out this book called “6 Weeks to a Bikini Body” (my sister, who is a triathlete/Ironman trainee, recommended it.) You won’t believe it, but I always hated running. It hurt my feet, and… I just totally hated it. I always did the elliptical until I read that the treadmill is way better than an elliptical because you are moving your own body weight. The articles I read suggested to just stick with the treadmill and after a few weeks, your body will adjust - I HATE the elliptical now.

For me, I do intervals because of my flat feet. I walk for 5 minutes, then do about 5-6mph pace for 10 minutes until I get in my 3.5 miles. That way I get a break and can bite off my workout in small chunks. Being a non-runner, getting into running was a TASK! For me, running in intervals, sticking with it, and just putting aside my hatred of the treadmill was key. This is a really long reply, but I hope it helps!

In July I agreed to start training for a half marathon in hopes of kicking my butt into gear to get buff for my wedding. I went from huffing and puffing at mostly walking that first run to proudly running the entire 13.1 miles race next week.Just stick with it, start slowly and build up gradually. You can do it!!

You gals are all so awesome (giddy little happy dance)! I’m doing email high fives here for the lot of you! Ms. Snapdragon–good research gal! If your knees are ok, the weight-bearing concussion of your foot striking a surface helps to strengthen those bones, muscles and core and those intervals are the key to great fitness gains and rapid results! You all are such an inspiration! Awesome job! :)

I need to bring my workout up a lot of levels! I keep picturing myself in a bikini on my honeymoon for motivation.

Is the 30 Day Shred only for Wii? Or is it a DVD? I think it would be a great addition to my workout!
