About Mrs. Peep Toe

Fabric Mecca

December 1st, 2008 @ 6:19 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

There are few things that I absolutely love about LA. #1- the Dodgers, and #2- the LA Fashion District, specifically the textiles (aka fabric).

Growing up, Mama Peep Toe introduced me to the Garment District, and over the years I have taken a few trips to get fabric for various projects- curtains, pillows, duvet covers, etc. They were all very simple square projects. And while I can still really only sew a square, I have come to TOTALLY appreciate the Mecca that is the LA Fashion District.

So, on my last visit to LA, I made Mama Peep Toe take me around the Garment District. Now I am going to warn you, it’s a little run down and a little gritty, but the fabrics are to die for!! According to this website, nowhere else on the West Coast even comes close, and I concur.

Now, the Fashion District itself is HUGE, so I suggest you start where Mama Peep Toe always takes me first: Michael Levine’s. It’s the largest store there (well, one of the only true ’stores’):

Hopefully, you can start to get an idea of how HUGE this store is. Check out how many white/ivory silks they have:

We perused Michael Levine’s for a bit, and then hit the streets for the real fun!! Once you hit the streets, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is up for negotiation. It’s bargain shopping at its best. I didn’t get a pic of the street vendors, but I think this pic starts to hint at all the fabric that is available:

Can we say fire hazard?

First and foremost, Mama Peep Toe and I were looking for fabric for our Chuppah. I was envisioning lace, but a more modern looking lace (no sequins and puffiness for me). The best part of the garment district is if you can dream it, they have it. After about 8 or 10 stores, we found it, and I love it! The best part was that the fabric was only 8 bucks a yard!

Next up, I was looking for some fabric to help decorate the ceremony. This time I wanted something modern. We found a Nicole Miller ivory silk for 11 bucks a yard. Love it!

And finally, I wanted to get some cream pashminas for my maids. Unfortunately, we could only find fabulous $50 pashminas or cheapo $8 ones, so we decided to get something even better: vintage looking wraps. We got 4 for the girls at $18 each, and I fell in love with one myself.

Here’s a hint of everything we got together. All in all, it was a very successful morning shopping trip.

If you are in the LA area, I highly suggest a trip down to the Garment District. But make sure you go with someone who knows where they are going. Otherwise, it can be a madhouse.

Anyone else venture to an unknown land just for a few fabulous wedding day purchases?

I’ve been to the Flower Mart and Moskatel’s. I’m going again in a couple weeks to look for vases and things.

Ooo, I’m LOVING that lace! I would love something like that to add a little pizazz to our tables at the reception.

Here I am in LA and no one to take me to the fabric district. Plus, Mr. Crab Cake forbade wedding talk while we were here. Eh, maybe I can get Future Momma Crab Cake to take us on Wednesday while we’re in Burbank!

I love Michael Levine! Such a great place for a DIY bride. I could seriously spend a whole afternoon there. It’s more expensive than the street vendors, but slightly cheaper than chain stores. The vendors will give you a ridiculous price (like $1 a yard, 3 yd minimum) but beware of the quality! PS. Michael Levine has the only free and clean public bathroom in the fashion/garment district. There is one located in Santee Alley a couple blocks away but you have to pay and it’s not very sanitary. Otherwise you’d have to go into a place like Starbucks or Bank of America. Just FYI!

Um… wanna be my tour guide? I’m planning on coming up from San Diego sometime in the coming weeks for a few projects and if I don’t have a dress by then, fabric for my friend who is a seamstress.

Glad there are other ML lovers out there.

Chau, there is no section that is specifically for weddings/brides.
Look here
for a follow up.

Miss Powderpuff- I may have a bit of lace left over- or do you need more than a yard?

shaver2b- I’d love to be a guide, but I just don’t get down to LA enough.

Oh how I miss this place. My mom used to take me to Michael Levine. This is where all of my highschool dance dresses got their start. I would design, and my wonderful seamstress of a mother would sew up exactly what I wanted (beautiful ball gown, siren dress with 3 foot train in sunset orange). Your post made me somewhat nostalgic. Now that my mom has passed, and I am recently engaged, wedding dress shopping is my most feared event. I am going to have to get a regular wedding dress that my mom didn’t make with her own hands. Still, I want to thank you for the post, this brought back some great memories, of spending all day lookgin for cloth, and then driving to Langers (the best Kosher Deli in Downtown) for lunch. Good luck with your dress miss. Peep toe
