Project Insecurity

December 1st, 2008 @ 11:11 am by Mrs. Powder Puff

I have a confession.

I am completely insecure… when it comes to my projects. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love crafting. But halfway through the project I end up second guessing myself and quit. Or, if I do keep going, I end up hating it when I’m finished.

My newest obsession is Quaker marriage certificates. If you can remember from my previous post, this is basically a certificate that states your vows, and your intent to enter into marriage. The bride and groom both sign it, as well as every guest at the ceremony to signify the commitment they are making to support the marriage. I think this is a really special, beautiful thing to do in place of a guestbook. It’s something that Mr. Powder Puff and I can hang in our home after the wedding, and be reminded of everyone who attended.

In my search for someone to make this certificate for us, I came to realize that they can cost upwards of $400. Ouch. So being the impulsive, crafty girl that I am, I decided that I could make one.

The problem is, I have zero experience with painting, and even less with calligraphy.

I do, however, enjoy drawing, so I convinced myself that I could make a decent looking certificate in no time at all. Silly, silly me… I ended up spending quite a bit of time on a couple of drafts this weekend, but after slaving over them, I decided that they were both hideous, and I scrapped them.

After considering my options (gorgeous, professionally made certificate vs. zero dollars to spend), I decided that the best thing for me to do would be to give up on making it myself and give myself over to the trusty internet.

Thank the wedding gods for Zazzle! This nifty little website saved my tuches when I was about to pull my hair out of my head with my sweaty, paint-stained hands.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the wonder that is Zazzle, it is basically a site where you can design anything you want. Yes, you read that right. Anything.

What is included in everything? Well, my friend, think hats, tee shirts, postcards, posters, stamps, calendars, mugs, even shoes… You dream it, they can make it, which is AWESOME! So, poor little stressed me thought, “Zazzle can definitely help me here!”

I decided to design a large poster, with a retro-ish print, which I found on handy dandy Microsoft Publisher. Now, I’ll admit, it took me quite awhile to get the sizing of the words the way I wanted them, but I am LOVING the final product! Take a gander at this:

I ordered this bad boy in one of the largest sizes they have, and it is currently on its way. Hooray! And the best part is, because I published my design to their gallery, I got 10% off. I loooove a deal!

Does anyone else get easily frustrated by projects?

fruistrated? only about EVERY single project ive done. I seem to struggle with the same kind of crafting insecurities. I dont think there is a single thing Ive done for the wedding that I havent nit picked to death once its finished.
Know how I fix it? I post some pics of the projects on my wedding blog and get the reassurance I need that my craftmanship doesnt look cheap. HAHA.
Vain? Maybe, but it slows the panic. Until the next project somes along.

How freakin’ ADORABLE!!!!!!!! Love it! We used zazzle for stamps and favor labels with our monogram design.

Also, word of advice: Upload a couple of pictures and make some magnets for christmas gifts.. they are super cheap and super personal! I did this last christmas and they were a huge hit!

actually my HTB and i were going over little details last night and we both hate traditional guestbooks that get put in a box somewhere to collect dust and he also loved your idea for repurposing the Quaker marriage certificate! we already started working on our own design/take on it last night! thanks so much for the inspiration!

Miss Powder Puff- I am so right there with you. Totally craft challanged and insecure. I love your Quaker marriage certificate. I need to find a similarly affordable Ketubbah- maybe I’ll just make ours….

I am challenged with the crafty planning! I have time on my hands and ideas, but can’t make a commitment on anything so I can’t start anything! So frustrating. I need to go make some lists. ;)
Love the poster!

Oh my gosh, that looks so good…I’m sure when it arrives on your doorstep you’ll love it that much more because of all the time that went into it, even if it did frustrate you.

Love the certificate — it looks great!

@Miss Peep Toe: I’m looking for a ketubah now too. But I have no ambitions to make my own; my Hebrew is egregious!

@AliCherri1: Yep, I published it there, in a couple of different sizes. I can customize it with your names and date, as well as your specific vows if you like. Send me a message if you’re interested and I’ll send you a sample!@notsojenny: You’re welcome! But don’t thank me, thank the Quakers! :)

Yes, yes, yes. I’m not crafty at all.

One note: your vows say “… to be my lawfully wedded husband.” Does that mean you’re printing two (one for each of you) or that you need to insert a different word for “husband”?

Oh my gosh, AWESOME! I was just contemplating doing a Quaker wedding certificate for us as well, but wasn’t sure how to go about it (I was thinking of the PowerPoint to pdf to kinko’s method….) but now I’m definitely going to check out Zazzle!

So what will you do about the wording of the vows? Would you put, “… to be my lawfully wedded husband/wife” or something different?
