About Miss Snapdragon

The Sweetest Scent

December 1st, 2008 @ 10:27 am by Miss Snapdragon

Few things are more personal than a woman’s perfume. We all often have extremely strong feelings about what scents or colognes we prefer. For me, I HATE perfume most of the time - mainly because so many perfumes are impolite - they can really overwhelm a room. To me, the best scents are the ones that really only someone who is very close to you will detect (i.e. Mr. Snapdragon.) I also have a supreme appreciation for bottled perfumes that actually smell like something real, not just a chemical concoction.

SO, this weekend my mom (she was visiting from Texas) and I went on the hunt for a wedding day perfume. Even though I rarely wear perfume, I would like to wear some sort of scenty something on my wedding day. Armed with a few recommendations… I set forth on my mission.

Originally, I fully intended to purchase something from Anthropologie or the Fresh counter. I love Anthropologie perfumes because I can always recognize the scent (smells like grapefruit or lemons, etc.)

Surprisingly, Anthropologie bombed out for me this time. Though they had GORGEOUS perfume bottles, I can’t buy a perfume based on packaging - that would just be silly. I am not sure what happened. Somewhere between the last time I bought Anthro perfume and now, they developed many new lines that seem much more complicated, for lack of a better word - hence more chemically smelling. So no go for Anthropologie (though we did find several other fun items!!!) Take a look at this adorable perfume bottle though:

While on my journey between Anthropologie and the Fresh counter, I veered into Sephora. (Really, is it even POSSIBLE to walk past a Sephora without venturing inside? Heck no!) I had heard of several perfumes that are popular for brides, so I checked those out first:

Daisy, by Marc Jacobs
NOTES - Strawberry, Violet Leaves, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Gardenia, Violet, Jasmine, Musk, Vanilla, White Woods
Snappy’s Take: The bottle is so, so cute (can you tell I am easily swayed by marketing??) but the scent was too complicated and confusing for my taste.

Nina, by Nina Ricci

NOTES - Calabrese Lemon, Ciprinha Lime, Red Toffee Apple, Vanilla Infusion, Moonflower, Peony Petals, Apple Tree Wood, Cotton Musk
Snappy’s Take: I had high hopes for this one, but again this perfume had too much going on, and really had a high chemical-type quality to the smell. Again, such a cute bottle. (le sigh)

Vera Wang, the Frangrance
NOTES - Bulgarian Rose, Calla Lily, Mandarin Flower, Gardenia, Lotus, Iris, White Stephanotis
Snappy’s Take: I actually didn’t mind this one TOO much. I think I related better to this perfume because the notes stick to a floral palette. However, I just didn’t love it, so…. no cigar.

Just when I was giving up hope, I hit the motherlode, a perfect storm of scents that I really liked…

Brit Sheer, by Burberry
NOTES - Yuzu, Pineapple Leaves, Litchi, Mandarin, Grapes, Pink Peony, Peach blossom, Nashi, White Musk, Blond Woods
Snappy’s Take: I really liked this one. Brit Sheer is light and SO polite. I didn’t feel like the smell was overwhelming at all, and the scent was like a fruit orchard - light, light, light, and recognizable. I didn’t select this one, but… I almost bought it!

J’Adore, by Dior
NOTES - Mandarin, Champaca Flowers, Ivy, African Orchid, Rose, Violet, Damascus Plum, Amaranth Wood, Blackberry Musk
Snappy’s Take: One of my Snapsisters recently discovered this perfume and made the recommendataion, so I made sure to check J’Adore out. Yum, yum, yum - The smell was again really polite and soft, while the musk kept the perfume from going TOO soft. I didn’t select this one either, but J’Adore was a top contender.

And now - drumroll please - the WINNER!

Miss Dior Cherie, by Dior
NOTES - Green tangerine, Violette, Pink jasmine, Patchouli, Crystalline musk, Strawberry leaves, Caramelized popcorn, Strawberry sorbet
Snappy’s Take: I LOVE THIS PERFUME!!! Apparently Dior perfumes go over well on me! If I would have read the aroma notes before test running this one…. I would have passed right on by. Crazy, isn’t it? Patchouli? Really? Somehow, the Dior Masters spun all of these unusual notes into a perfume that is feminine, polite, soft without being musty, with specific, sharp notes that create a distinctly NON-chemically smell. AND - the bottle is adorable. Swoon!

So I never made it over to Fresh… What perfumes do you recommend??

my absolute favourite perfume is Shi by Alfred Sung… I don’t know why… I’ve been wearing it for years. It’s just so clean and simple… I LOVE it

I also hate Patchouli, yet I love Miss Dior Cherie! I’ve worn it for years. At first sniff, I didn’t think I would like it, but after trying it out, it smelled amazing and I was hooked!

I do agree that it is perfect as a wedding day perfume…it’s romantic and fun without being too overwhelming. Great choice, Snappy :D

I love Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d”Issey– the top notes are really fresh but it’s got great staying power. I love when you toss your hair and get another whiff of the scent. Mmmmm….

i have the vera wang perfume and burberry sheer and love them both! i think Vera Wang has the power to be a little overwhelming if you put too much on, but burberry sheer is just right. this summer i discovered L’Artisan and fell in love with their La Chasse Aux Papillons scent.

thank you so much for sharing! I too am a sucker for packaging! in fact, I was intrigued by the Miss Dior Cherie perfume when I saw the adorable magazine ad of the girl holding onto a giant balloon. just imagine how chic that perfume bottle will look in your “getting ready” photos!

Fi bought me a bottle of Vera Wang Princess and I think I fell for the packaging instead of the scent… I will definitely check out the ones you recommended. VWP is just too strong for me! I’ve heard good things about Flowerbomb, too.

I went to the Bermuda Perfumery while on vacation, where they make all their perfumes on-site, using Bermuda rainwater (which I realize is the same rain as anywhere else). I chose Oleander, but there are 8 to choose from, plus a new gender-neutral one. Delish! The packaging is great too - a pink grosgrain ribbon holds a silverplate plaque with the perfume’s name engraved into it. Le sigh.

Ooh, what a yummy thread!

I love the “Pure Grace” scent from Philosophy, it smells almost like soap and water, perfect for the summer and not too overwhelming.
Now I have Jo Malone’s nectarine and honey perfume and I love it! (DH got it for my birthday!)

I wore Daisy, which Mr. Avo at first said he hated, but he has since changed his mind (after the wedding day) and now likes it. He is super difficult to please when it comes to perfume. I do have to admit, I may have been a little bit swayed by the packaging myself :)

@Mrs. Avocado: I was so sad that I didn’t like it - I really thought I was going to want to buy it before I went shopping! I have several friends that wear it, and they all love it. I think my nose is just a freak of nature!! The bottle is just so adorable, too. (sigh)

Thanks for the reviews! :) I love the Miss Dior Cherie ads, I might have to go sniff it soon! I am also intrigued by the description of pure grace by philosophy in the comments. I don’t usually wear perfume, and Mr. Taffy doesn’t like it, but I would like to have a scent to remember the day by. I’m going to get perfume from CB I hate Perfume for my bridal party, I might try those as well.

Well, I do have one perfume but it is sassy and kind of strong, mostly suited to be worn with lingerie!!! *blushes* It’s Gucci Rush.

Right now I am really loving BPAL, with such a variety and really specific scents you can find one you really like. Of course since they are only online, it’s a bit of an adventure finding something perfect, but they sell little sample sizes too.

Different perfumes also smell different of different people because of our body chemicals. I’m one of those people who is really sensitive to perfumes, like have a headache from smelling them for the rest of the day, so now I have to check those out! I occasionally wear Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana, that that’s usually just for special occasions.

I wore Daisy as well. It’s one of the rare perfumes I really love. I suspect it’s the strawberry notes. They just combine so well with the grapefruit.

Philosophy’s Amazing Grace is also one of the best, cleanest, loveliest perfumes I’ve ever smelled before

Ooh! I’ll have to try that one! I’ve been shopping around for a new perfume, so thanks for the great reviews!

I love CHANCE by CHANEL! But to all buyers out there, make sure to try it on yourself before purchasing. Chance is known to smell different on everyone, and it actually changes a bit as you wear it. So make sure you like it on yourself.

Sephora has a great “gift” idea that I purchased for myself. Basically, for $50, you get 10 (or 8, depending on which one you buy) samples of perfumes. You can try all of the perfumes at your leisure. The purchase also entitles you to a gift certificate, which you take in and exchange for a full size bottle of the sample that you liked best! Its a great way to be able to really try on the perfumes for a few days in a row. (I get headaches very easily from perfume, so this is great for me! I get the chance to try on the perfume for a few days to see how it smells AND how it affects me, without committing to the large bottle!)

I’m really picky about my perfumes too and I definitely don’t want them to be too overpowering. I’ve been wearing Fresh Pink Jasmine and love the soft floral fragrance! I spray the bottle in front of me, walk into it, and it’s just right.

Thanks for sharing! I wanted to find a new perfume for my wedding day, and only wear it for special occasions, so each time I wear it, it reminds me of our special day.

There’s an essential oils shop in my area called Aroma de Terra. I just buy plan Tea Rose oil and they add a carrier to make it more of a perfume. It is so delicate, feminine and only $4! They have a website and online store too…www.aromadeterra.com

I am also going to highly recommend philosophy (www.philosophy.com), which is available at Sephora. I am a big fan of Falling in Love. I think its a romantic scent. Amazing Grace has great staying power, but not overpowering. I don’t find any philosophy fragances super perfumy. Get the scrub, the shower gel and the fragrance and you will be set!

How funny, I’m also in the market for a wedding perfume and got a sample of Miss Dior Cherie the last time I was at Sephora. I wore it all day yesterday and liked it, but I was also wearing Bath & Body Works vanilla sugar cookie lotion so I need to try it again on its own to make sure I’m in love. It definitely fits the mood I want for the wedding– not floral, sophisticated, a little sultry in the dry down, but still soft. I love the sample thing so you can see if your body chemistry really works with the scent.

Yay! Another Miss Dior Cherie wearer here :) When we first started dating, my husband gave me the classic Channel #9 because he thought it smelled “fancy” and made him think of me - it was one of the first big compliments he gave me!

I took my husband shopping for a scent after the wedding and Miss Dior Cherie was the one he liked the best of the ones I loved. It’s just so pretty.

I highly recommend Maybe Baby by Benefit. It smells clean and feminine and is not overpowering at all. I wouldn’t describe it as floral or fruity- its just simple and yummy! For every day I like philosophy Pure Grace- another clean, fresh scent

I love j’adore, too! I’ve been using a little sample bottle of it and it’s almost gone, sadly. My favorite right now is CK Euphoria. So yummy. Before that it was Poeme by Lancome.
