About Mrs. Powder Puff

Our Hitching Post

December 2nd, 2008 @ 2:17 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

One of the first major decisions Mr. Powder Puff and I made after we got engaged was to book the reception and ceremony site. Now, for those of you who don’t know me, I am not a calm, relaxed person. Oh no, my friend. I am basically your typical Type-A, anal-retentive freak. Naturally, given my crazy temperament, this was not a calm, relaxed process. I knew enough about weddings and venues (or lack thereof) to work myself into a frenzy over the fact that our dream date would be booked already at every single venue in town, therefore we needed to find a place rightthenandthere!

There were two important factors we were looking for in a venue. First, that it had a ceremony site. The church that I attended with my parents when I lived at home is… well… ugly. Straight out of the brown, wood-loving late ’70s, the church is not what I pictured us getting married in. It was obviously not built with weddings in mind.

The second feature we were looking for was proximity to Lake Michigan. What is the point of getting married in Western Michigan if you’re not going to be near the lake?

Mom and Dad Powder Puff, Mr. Powder Puff, and I scouted three reception locations before making a deposit on “the one”. The first was a country club in a beautiful little town on Lake Michigan. Gorgeous. Unfortunately, we were less than impressed with the gazebo, and the interior of the ballroom was very dark. I’d rather have the decor work with us rather than against us. Next!

The second I fell absolutely in love with. It was right on the lake, had huge windows (and I mean HUGE, all the way up to the top of the 18 foot ceiling), and a marble floor entryway with a grand piano in the corner. It was all around fabulous… IF we were inviting 500 guests. Our 120-person wedding would have been dwarfed in that room. Sniff. So with tears in my eyes, we moved on to venue #3.

The day before, I attended one of my close friend’s weddings at this beautiful reception hall. It has a gorgeous entryway, is close to the lake, and has a beautiful gazebo… this was looking good! There’s a patio that will be perfect for our cocktail hour, it has nice big windows, is brightly decorated, and best of all, there’s a “starry sky” ceiling above the dance floor that twinkles while you dance—awesome!

Unfortunately, this venue was booked for our dream date. Oh no! My nightmare came to life!!!

Luckily, my parents are well acquainted with my crazy self. They told me to take a freakin’ breath already (in a nicer way, of course). Everything would be fine. We would just move the date back a couple of weeks. Wow. Sanity is so logical and… sane!

So with everyone calm and happy, we booked the date.

And now, here’s a few photos for your viewing pleasure.

The gazebo, all decked out for my friend’s wedding

The starry ceiling!

The colors of the room- a nice mix of neutrals.

Mr. Powder Puff and myself, having a grand old time, newly engaged.

How long did it take you to find a venue? What features were important to you?

I love your venue! The gazebo is gorgoeus! Did you go to WMU by any chance? My cousin and her FI went there (they now live in Kalamazoo) and she is right about your age/was an education major.

I totally agree that the best part about being married in West Michigan is being by the water! Surprisingly, Muskegon doesn’t have a lot of places like that. We managed to find a yacht club on the channel between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan though and everyone has to drive by Lake Michigan right around sunset time to get there :)

@Miss Meatball: It’s in Spring Lake, MI. A tiny little town, but really cute!@crickepte: Whereabouts? I grew up in Muskegon. :)

I love your venue! Especially the starry ceiling :)
I am also SUPER jealous you only looked @ 3 venues, FH and I have looked at 10 so far and we are super close to booking the 2nd one we looked at, yep I wish we would have figured that out a week or two ago, but OH well :)

Harbour Towne Yacht Club, it’s by Pere Marquette Beach up past the Silversides. We didn’t really look much outside Muskegon because I wanted it to be close to the church. They have surprisingly few venues near the water, especially large enough to hold 200 people! What high school did you go to? I went to Oakridge.

Your venue looks really beautiful! Love the starry sky too!

I’ve always known that I wanted to get married in one of 3 historical estates in our area. I began calling and getting information on them a whole year before we even got engaged! Then after he proposed I already knew what venue I was going to choose, but when I called them all the dates I wanted had already been booked AND they had doubled (yes, doubled!) their prices! So I ended up going with estate #2 which I really liked better anyway, but had it second on my list because of the price (which ended up being the same price as #1 after the price jump). Everything seems to work out in the end although there are often lots of bumps along the way.

Yay, go Spartans! :)

I actually had dinner for prom in ‘98(wow, was it that long ago?) in Spring Lake. So gorgeous, and I love that it’s only a few minutes from Grand Haven. And July on the lake will be so lovely!

I’m glad that you were able to work it out! We got our date (we didn’t go in with a specific one, just anything we could get) because another couple gave it up, otherwise we would have had to find a different venue. It’s crazy how complicated it can be!!!

@AliCherri1: we actually booked the first place we looked at, but we looked at about 10 others before we made the decision. I wasn’t ready to settle on the first one.

Wow…the gazebo is such a great size! It looks great. Are apt complex is actually right next door to an historical mansion…there are several on the same road we live on…but the one next door to us was like we were going to be getting married in our backyard. We called and asked them some prices and check everything out…and we booked it!! :) http://theworldaroundher.blogspot.com/2008/08/glen-foerd.html

We started venue hunting in July and we are finalizing a choice this week (December) for a wedding next July. Yes, I’ve seen or contacted every venue in the entire Philadelphia metro area. I have a serious decision making disorder when it comes to spending this amount of money.

We wanted a venue with a ceremony location as well - we didn’t want our guests to have to drive all over the place. We also wanted an outdoor ceremony site, with some nice views, and a good backup ceremony option in case of bad weather. We actually went and visited a few places before we got engaged, and we’re taking my parents to our favorite one next weekend! We’re pretty flexible with dates, but it’s at the high end of our budget, so fingers crossed it works out!

(p.s. to the bee tech team - major sign in issues going on! i kept signing in, but it would take me to the boards, and when i surfed back to this post, i would be logged out again! this happened 3 or 4 times before i just gave up)

Took us 3 months- an AGONIZING three months. Important factors were that it wasn’t horribly expensive, that it wasn’t a typical, cheesy looking ballroom type place, and that is was close to our ceremony location. Zing-zang-zoom! This place had all three, AND they lowered their food and bev. minimum without us even asking! Though, to be fair, we were considering a dinner pkg instead of a wedding pkg, so this ended up getting them a little more money, and us WAY more bang for our buck!
