About Mrs. Peep Toe

She Said What? A Non-Wedding Wedding.

December 3rd, 2008 @ 5:10 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

Shortly after Mr. Peep Toe and I were engaged we went to LA-LA land for the Holidays. Both Mr. Peep Toe and I have family in LA, so our trips down there are often whirlwind adventures where we bounce from family to family, and if we are lucky we get to see our friends.

This past holiday season was even busier than usual. We went to LA to celebrate Christmas with my folks and on the 26th we jetted off to Hawaii for an amazing trip with his fam.

Mama Peep Toe asked me how I envisioned our wedding. While I hadn’t really thought of what I wanted until a few days before, I had attended and participated in both my brother and sister’s weddings six and five years previously, so I felt like I kinda knew what to expect. Nothing crazy elaborate, but a super fun day with all of our family and friends. I was envisioning something woodsy and organic with about 150 people in the Bay Area. And of course, a full bar (just because I love the environment doesn’t mean I don’t like to party)!!

Well, Mama Peep Toe had other ideas.

She knew that Mr. Peep Toe and I are on pretty tight budgets, so she suggested putting the money towards a down payment on a house and then just throwing an afternoon open house.

She said what?

While my head said, “that’s a great idea and that I should be oh so grateful for all of their generosity and support” the little girl inside my heart said, “Wait- how would Poppy Peep Toe walk me down the aisle at an open house party? And does she know how much a down payment on a house is in the Bay Area-let alone one big enough to host 150 people (remember, this was before the housing bust)???”

Here I am enjoying the magic of Christmas with my niece:

And here we are relaxing a day later in Hawaii with a post engagement glow (I so wish I were on vacation right now):

In the picture above I am wearing sunglasses because I had cried all night saying goodbye to the wedding dreams I had created in the ten days I had been engaged.

But as you can tell I am smiling ear to ear in the picture because early the next morning Mr. Peep Toe reminded me why I was marrying him. Because he understands me, neurosis and all.

He found the perfect compromise. We would hold a small wedding with just those nearest and dearest to us. This would allow us to keep the cost to a minimum, and save the rest for a house in the future, all the while creating a meaningful intimate affair. He even suggested our favorite restaurant in Carmel, Casanova. Who wouldn’t want to marry here:

So we flew off to Hawaii with all our problems solved to enjoy a relaxing vacation.

And that’s why we decided to throw an intimate wedding!! If only the location were that easy!

How did you decide how many people you would have at your wedding, and did you have to revise your wedding once you started planning it?

Choosing a venue was by far the hardest and most stressful decision in the entire planning process for us. My heart felt for you when you said you were in tears over it! I was too :( Of course, it all worked out in the end. All the planning that followed after that was much much easier :)

@ Mrs. Lemon- so jealous that you had your rehearsal dinner at Casanova. I LOVE that place.

@ Mrs. Penguin- so glad someone else struggled, but you are right, finding the place is the hardest part.

Since getting engaged, I’ve let go a lot of my wedding fantasies. There were two locations that I’d wanted to get married at for years. Well, once I found out exactly how much that cost, I let go of that and picked a lovely venue that fits our budget. Luckily for us we don’t really have to pare the guest lists. Neither of us has huge families, so we’ll only have about 50 people at our wedding. I would be very, very uncomfortable at a huge wedding anyway, so this works out best for us.

I’m glad you found a compromise you could be comfortable with. Plus, small weddings are great because you can talk to everyone and eat your dinner!

We wanted to get married at home, because we love to host, and we couldn’t think of a better way of making the wedding feel like our own than by having it at a home in the family. We’re having 80 people, which is about 30 more than my FH wanted, but he’s ok with it because we’re having it at my Mum’s house on the waterfront (we live on the West Coast in Canada) which will be spacious and relaxed even with 80. An intimate party=more quality time with your guests, and it also means we can throw a much better celebration than we could if we were trying to manage 150 people.

I think that restaurant looks like a fun intimate place! I often wish our guest list were smaller so we could spend more time with our guests.

My dream wedding would be 50 at the max at a cute little restaurant but with our families as large as they are thats not going to happen. But I was super lucky , I found the perfect venue and fell in love with it before I found out my FI family is very good friends with he owner. It’s allowed us to do things I never thought we could fit into our budget. It’s also helped me become closer with my FMIL.

We started with a 100-person guestlist and desired venue was an art museum. The Wall Street crash changed things a little, so now i’m having an intimate dinner for 40+ at our favorite french restaurant instead.

The only big change: I need to get a new dress because the one I picked is too “big” (train and all) for the cosy venue. Sigh!
