Long Vs. Round Tables: The Aftermath

December 3rd, 2008 @ 1:25 pm by Mrs. Espresso

Once upon a time in July, we were debating between having long or round tables at our wedding. I loved long tables, but I had a lot of people telling me they wouldn’t look right, they require too many centerpieces, people’s knees would touch, and on and on the reasons went. So I wrote a post about it and asked your opinion. I’m so glad you all encouraged me to follow my heart and go with what I wanted.

Here is what our reception area looked like with the long tables:

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how they worked out. The family style dining experience encouraged our guests to talk with people around them and to just relax. You can’t really tell from the picture, but no one was cramped. Each guest had enough space, but was still close enough to everyone around them to have multiple conversations. Nice and cozy.

This is a picture of a wedding there with round tables. Still looks great. I would have been in a state of absolute bliss no matter what tables we had that day, but I’m glad we went with what we wanted. They didn’t cost us more. I didn’t hear of any guests knocking knees. And we got the look we were going for. Mission accomplished.

Do you have a strong preference for table shape? Why?

A belated Happy Thanksgiving, Mrs. Espresso! The long tables look great! I hadn’t noticed in the other pictures that Sandra took that you used the green apples in the vase idea–soooo fresh and pretty. I hope you and your favorite peoples (including the four legged kind) are all doing well. Happy Wednesday! :)

I was also staunchly pro-long table and was so pleased with the result. I was so excited how the tables facilitated conversations among our guests (which was my main reason for preferring the long tables - I always feel like the big circles are hard to talk across). I was amazed by how many people talked to us after the wedding and say, “oh, yes, we talked to your cousins!” or “Your coworker is a kick.” And while we did have lots of centerpieces, we were able to keep them extremely simple which had a big impact all lined up.

…and I also didn’t get any reports of bumped knees! ;) LOL. I’m pretty sure the table manufacturers thought of that already.

We’re doing large square tables - its unusual but I just love it!

Ps… can’t get over how gorgeous your location was. Just stunning!

Aww! Thanks for posting this. I was wondering about the long tables myself. I love the look of them. Very helpful!

We did long tables, and a number of people thought it was weird until they saw it all come together. I actually did 30 long tables, I had 2 of them end to end and aisle down the middle and other side another 2 end to end. So we had what looked like 15 long tables, with white linens and runners down the middle. My vision came together - forget the haters…

@Erin: Me too! So many of our guests talked to people that they wouldn’t have normally.
@Miss Meatball: Thank- you so much! And I love the square tables too! Can’t wait till I get to see those pics :)
@Wolff2Be: It’s nice to mix things up- I think it will catch your guests by surprise and add a nice creative touch
@Heather B: haha ah haters :) We had 23 tables and put 3 in a row as well to make them look like 1 long extra table, and with white linens too!
@Miss Snapdragon: awh thank- you!! It absolutely was and the trees just made it more magical
