Mama Fondue’s Wedding Dress

December 3rd, 2008 @ 12:29 pm by Ms Fondue

Many brides save their wedding gown in hopes that, one day, they may have a daughter who would like to wear it. This is fairly unlikely, as gown shopping is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning for many women.

A few months ago, I was reading an article or blog that suggested wearing your mom’s wedding dress to your rehearsal. This got me thinking. My parents eloped in the summer of 1974. Mama Fondue didn’t have a traditional wedding dress, but did purchase a new outfit for the occasion, as shown in the one and only picture taken on their wedding day:

It’s a very ’70s printed skirt with matching top. I inquired about it, and Mama Fondue said she still had it. I asked her if I could wear it to our wedding rehearsal, and she was more than amused. It’s a little snug, but I was planning on dropping a couple pounds before next May anyway.

Is anyone wearing their mom’s dress, whether it be on the wedding day or some other time?

Anyway… it’s surprising to see that the dress is still in excellent condition. Love the vintage look!

My mom has an untraditional wedding dress, too! I’m getting it remade (which I feel a little guilty about) and wearing it to my rehearsal dinner. I wish it fit me as is, but it doesn’t. :)

That is so cool! My mom also had an untraditional 70’s wedding dress. It was a long flowy cotton dress that she sewed and hand-embroidered. She’s a teacher now and wears it every year for 70’s dress up day. :)

My mom is 4′10” and was 86 pounds when she got married….If I had gotten married when I was 12 I probably could have worn her dress! :) It’s neat that you are though!

Love your mom’s outfit, and it looks great on you even before your planned pre-wedding slimdown. I’m with Katy, my mom was my height (5′8) and weight 103 lbs until after she had her fourth baby. Seriously. Let’s just say I’ve got a couple of lbs on her. Unfortunately, she also gave it away years ago (and she even sewed it herself, a simple sheath, very Jackie Kennedy!). Seeing how much she regrets that decision has ensured that I’ll keep my dress after the big day, not in a box preserved but ready to be worn again, even if just for dress up for my future babies!

Very hippitdy-dippity (that is my attempt at saying I love it in 70’s speak)

Aww, my momma’s wedding dress was 1975 all the way - though it was white, it definitely had bell sleeves and the lace was all DAISIES. She was the cutest little hippie bride. I LOVE your mom’s dress and think you look so fantastic in it!

Oh, my mom’s dress was incredibly gorgeous, and even though she got married in December and I got married in June, I totally would have worn it…if I weighed half as much as I do.

I will probably wear my grandmothers wedding dress to the rehearsal :) I wanted to get it altered to be more cocktaily (it is tea length) but the idea was rejected by my sisters :(

that’s so cool! my mom’s dress is way too tiny unless I get some ribs removed (she’s 5′3″ and I’m 5′10″!)

That’s super groovy. My mom was about a size 00 when she got married. I’d be psyched if I could wear any of her dresses.

you look so cute in that dress! my mom was also about 90 lbs when she got married so i’d be happy if i even got one thigh into any of her dresses.

From your profile photo I’ve always thought you had short hair! I thought it was a short crop, and SO hip and cool on you! Are you considering chopping your hair post-wedding? Your long hair is stunning, but short would be ridiculously chic on you. :)

my mom and dad got married in front of a judge. She wore a ruffly cream blouse and a red skirt suit - I wore the blouse in some of our engagement pictures!
