Calligraph-free

December 4th, 2008 @ 2:29 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

I have an embarrassing confession to make: I had never heard of calligraphy until a few months ago. Sure, I knew some people had beautiful handwriting, but I never knew it was such a skilled form of art. I fully appreciate the attention to detail and aesthetic value.

Beautiful calligraphy by Tracy Joe

I would love to hire a calligrapher for our invitations; however, we do not have room in our budget to do so. I could teach myself, as Mrs. Shortcake did, but I am nowhere near as talented and might just burst if I take on another DIY project.

Source

My solution? To print our invitations from my computer using a calligraphy font. And best of all? It’s free! I found two great websites with free calligraphy fonts. All you have to do is download the font to your computer, and place them in your fonts folder, which is located in the computer’s control panel (on PCs).

I downloaded two fonts from the first website: freebooter script and renaissance.

From the second website, I downloaded three fonts: champagne, lainie day, and quilline script thin.

Can you recommend any other calligraphy fonts?

I tried to teach myself the calligraphy and it is a LOT harder than you would think. My calligraphy isn’t nealry as nice as these fonts are. I like the Freebooter and the champagne!

I want calligraphy, and Mr. Taffy thinks it is completely silly to pay for it. (I agree, but still want it!) I haven’t found any local people or priced it out, so we will probably print as well! The fonts are lovely, thanks for sharing! :)

I’m planning to write out my own. I’m not going to use full-on calligraphy, but I have been practicing a cute handwriting, so I think I’ll use that instead.

Here’s hoping I don’t drive myself crazy!

@Miss Powder Puff: My mom has good handwriting, maybe I can ask her to help with the invites!

Bleh - I have terrible handwriting anyway, I don’t think I could ever handle calligraphy. I’m jealous of those who can, though!

My family is involved with charities and a few galas - they used to use calligraphy but then started printing on the envelopes - most people cannot tell the difference (including the “well established traditionalists”)! It saves so much money and your hand if you are doing it

My stationer offers an affordable alternative to calligraphy - a calligraphy machine! We can choose the font, and the envelopes are run through a machine that automatically “pens” the addresses. It is not as beautiful as hand-written calligraphy, but another option to computer printing!

I downloaded a font and printed it onto our envelopes too! It worked wonderfully–I used Jane Austen from dafont.com and EVERYone thought I handwrote the envelopes! It helps that I used pretty copper envelopes from http://www.paperandmore.com but otherwise it was a simple ‘ol inkjet printer and free fonts. :) Good luck!

Thank you for the fonts Miss Spring Roll! I was wondering how I would do the script on the envelopes, and I think you solved it. I think its much easier and time effective to do it this way, since my handwriting is ok, but I write slanted without lines to guide me…

We used Adine Kirnberg Script from dafont.com It’s a cool website for other fonts too. We got lots of compliments on ours.

We printed ours as well. I just don’t see the point in paying someone to write out addresses, and I have terrible handwriting. And honestly, I don’t think the guests give a crap how we addressed our envelopes. I know I could care less as a guest! So, we printed them at home. I will tell you one issue we had - when trying to print the return address on the back flap, the flap would stick up a little when going through, so the ink would run on the edge. I ended up using a stamp we had made for the return address. But this all depends on your printer I think. Obviously just test it first.

Love the lainie day! It’s beautiful and a little more modern than the others. I can’t wait to see how your invites turn out!
