Hair Tough as Straw

Hair Tough as Straw : wedding hair vail Crownup

Sometimes I feel I look like this

There are a few good things about having curly long hair…

1. When you don’t have a brush, it’s OK most of the time
2. You can easily go for the beach-y look
3. Many people with straight hair will envy you

There are also a few not-so-good things about having curly long hair…

1. When you don’t have a brush and you try to use your fingers, it’s a frizzy mess
2. You sometimes feel like your hair always looks beach-y
3. You will envy people with straight hair

Now, what do I do about it? I straighten most of the time. I’ve been doing it for a while and there are a few tools I cannot live without and I feel I must share.

Must have #1: Paddle brush and a hairdryer with an attachment. Watch out, they get hot hot hot!

Must have #2: A good ceramic straightener. I have two: one a T3 Tourmaline wet/dry, and the other a classic Chi iron

Chi Turbo

With names like this, it sounds like I should be on a mission to Mars, not just straightening my hair.

Must have #3: a good finishing serum like Biosilk Therapy by Farouk… you only need a dab but it really polishes off the ends and magically makes your hair look split-end-less (yeah, like that’ll ever really happen).

I’m thinking I’ll straighten my hair before I get it curled for our wedding, but I know that curls “take easier” when hair is a little dirty…

Any thoughts? Anyone wash their hair the day of the wedding? Did your hair lose its curl?

I’m gathering the pictures from my horrific hair trial, so stay tuned for that.

I have naturally wavy hair, so I feel your pain. I would have gone insane a long time ago if it wasn’t for my Sedu flat iron!

I am going to have my stylist wash and blow dry my thick, wavy hair the day before the wedding. That way, it will be straight and pretty for the rehearsal dinner and ready to take curls and hold its shape the day-of. This is what a friend did for her wedding and it not only saved time, but her hair was beautiful all day and night on her wedding.

@ Miss Powder Puff - I have wavy hair too and I sometimes think it’s the worst! Yes I can do straight easy-ish and yes my hair will hold a curl, unlike some I know, but I can never depend on it to be either. I feel like I have to straighten it almost ALL the time because it isn’t dependably wavy enough - just enough to look like a mess.

@Amy: that’s a good idea- i was thinking about just straight for the rehearsal too!

@ Miss Powder Puff/Robin - Wavy hair is the worst…and you can’t even complain about because everyone will tell you they want it! I feel the same way, either I let it wave and look like a bum, or I have to do a lot of straightening!

I did the same thing Amy did–went to the hairstylist and her blowdry and straighten my hair and wore it that way for the rehearsal dinner. The next morning, when my hair stylist came, it was just “dirty” enough and it was much better for the curls (my wedding day hairstylist required that it was straight anyway, so that she could perfectly form curls the way she wanted them to go). It worked perfectly! The hairstylist was able to do really make my hair work and last all day long by having a more “clean slate” to work with.

Which straightener do you recommend out of the two? I have very curly hair and I am looking to get into the straightening habit.

Thanks!

@Trebuchet: You really can’t go wrong with a Chi if your hair is very curly and thick. The other is good as well, but I’ve never had to worry when I use my Chi. If you have shorter hair, I would recommend getting the smaller size because the heat will be distributed over a smaller space. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Be careful straighting it with the flat iron because it is very hard to get hair to curl after that. My hairstylist was trying to curl my (dirty) hair for a wedding and couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t curl. I told her that I had straightened it with the flat iron the night before and she told me that’s why it wouldn’t take any curl. Everyone’s hair is different but I would try it out beforehand just to make sure.

I used to use Biosilk but my stylist said its got a ton of alcohol and was drying me out. Since I stopped, my hair has been shinier than ever… just a thought! I wish I had curly hair… but the grass is always greener, right?

I have naturally wavey hair. Now add living in the south and humidity and it is an instant frizzy mess. I chose, mostly out of laziness and an hour more of sleep to completely ignore my hair. Howevery, the one thing that I can not do is not wash my hair everyday. Yes, I do know it is not good but I can not stand to feel dirty and washing the rest of my bod and leaving the hair alone just grosses me out. When my stylist and I were talking about this, she said that she actually prefers for brides (or anyone for that matter) to wash their hair in the morning and dry it but not to put anything in it. That way she does not have to worry if it is going to be “too dirty” and can get to work. So far it has worked well for me doing it this way and does not require extra hair-spray to hold, which is just as bad as not washing the hair to me. YUCKY…

I did it similar to Amy, but I just did it myself rather than having a stylist do it. Showered, washed, and blew out my hair right before the rehearsal dinner. And then I didn’t touch it again — it wasn’t so dirty that it bothered me, but I slept on it so it wasn’t clean and straight enough to not hold well the next day. It barely budged for 14 hours the next day — the only piece that came out fell because it snagged on the comb of my veil when I was taking it out, not because of the hair itself.

I have long, curly hair. I also often straighten it (love my wet-to-dry iron - saves so much time!). For my wedding (and hair trial), I showed up au naturelle. I washed and air dried the day (maybe night?) before. My stylist did not straighten first, she went right to the curling iron. It looked great; definitely no frizz and held all day and night. Plus, why should I spend an hour straitening my hair only to have her spend an hour curling it? (yes, it takes a minimum of an hour… I have a lot of hair!).

I’ve heard that a good compromise if you must shower on the wedding day (I know I will, my whole body feels weird by the end of the day if I don’t) is to skip washing your hair and just condition. A couple people I know have done this and say it works pretty well!

Oh my goodness, do NOT straighten your hair before you get it done for your wedding. Your curls and any kind of volume your stylist gives you will just fly away. Going in with clean hair is fine, but keep your curly texture, a talented stylist can make it look smooth and silky w/o straightening it beforehand.

P.S. I have lots of wavy curls as well, I have to recommend the DevaCurl product, Angell, for those days you just don’t have the energy to blow out your hair. It’s a life/time saver especially in the summer! Throw it in when it’s wet, and you’re off!

I heart biosilk!! I used to use it religiously before I had Mini Crab Cake and all my curl fell out. Yes, it happens. She’s 4 and I still don’t have any curl!
