About Mrs. Shortcake

Our Photographer…

December 4th, 2008 @ 3:49 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

… was, hands-down, the worst part of our wedding. Photography was, is, and continues to be such a huge aspect of that day, that it really kills me to do this.

I’m not going to review him.

So, suffice it to say that he was the most unprofessional photographer that I, my family, or guests had ever met, and I still get emails about his antics to this day. But, I need to move past grieving and focus on healing, so that’s the end of that affair. He sucked, he blew it, and it can’t be fixed.

Or can it?

Enter one six-hour dinner with Anne Ruthmann. I forgot to tell you, but sitting at that table were also the rocktographers; Nhiga Tram, Jake and Jess of Kampphotography. Three very lovely people, and very talented photographers. From that dinner came not only budding friendships but a very special offer:

sc1

The Kamps are going to redo our wedding photos!

sc2

Of course, it will only be the photos of Mr. Shortcake and I, as we can’t very well fly out ten wedding party members and family to Winnipeg.

sc3

But then again, isn’t that what we were missing the most? Amazing portraits of us… looking happy?

sc4

{ all images by the Kamps, from their blog }

Has anyone else redone their wedding photos? How did it go?

we had to redo our engagement photos…I know it’s not the same thing at all, but it was really disappointing how badly our first photographer behaved. You could absolutely tell how much happier, natural, and sincere our second session felt by looking at our photos. It will be totally worthwhile for you, and can hopefully bring closure as well as some fantastic photos! Good luck!

I’m so sorry you had such a terrible photographer. Photography is so important to me, I booked my photographer second after the venue. I haven’t even talked to caterers yet! I’m so glad you’ll get to reshoot your photos, even without your wedding party, at least you’ll have some amazing shots of the two of you!

I’m so excited you are doing this! I had a bad photographer too… but I take blame for it. Oh well, you honestly do grieve and then heal! I really hope you have some photos to share with us of your wedding day. I just loved reading about your wedding and hope to hear more about it one day!!

Mrs. Shortcake, are you comfy sharing HOW you came to pick your disappointing photographer? Was your wedding the first time working with him (since your dad did e-pics of you and the mister)?

Ms. Shortcake - that’s so exciting for you. I do agree that the pictures of the two of you are the most important and priceless. And they are obviously doing such a wonderful thing for you, I don’t think you should take advantage, but would there maybe ALSO be a way they could do some post-production editing on some non-pro pictures your family or friends might have captured?

Such amazing work happens in post, that maybe you could even get some of the non-posed stuff and details from the wedding if you can track down anyone who might have taken pictures of all your hard work and your friends/family having fun. And then you could sort of end up with some semi-pro pictures! At the very least, it’s great you’re able to recreate the ones of the two of you! Hope it goes well!

I hope you *do* review him. If not here, elsewhere on the net. Yelp, citysearch, knot boards, etc. Just to prevent this from happening to another bride. Hurray for redos though! :)

YAYAYAYAYAYAY!! I’m so happy for you :) I also saw some of you photos the other day - I wish I was getting married in Canada so you could do my wedding! (We are honeymooning there though, how close are you to French Canada? :))

That’s so great! And I know you probably wish someone told you this before your big day, but is there any big piece of advice you would give brides to be about how to avoid picking a bad photographer? How did you choose your photographer? Did he have mostly good reviews and do you think your wedding was a fluke? Or something else entirely? Sorry this was such a painful process for you! I think we all enjoyed reading about your beautiful vintage details. I hope your new pictures are everything you want and more!

@phruphru: I actually booked our photographer on the recommendation of one friend. I never met him before the wedding, and although I had bad feelings (he didn’t return emails, etc) I didn’t cancel out of fear of my parents being angry (their money - turns out they would have been okay :P ). My biggest recommendation would be to find all of the reviews you can (this man had none), ask past brides, and TRUST YOUR GUT. It is SO worth it to lose out on a deposit rather than on your entire wedding.
@tahoebound: I won’t be reviewing him because I am setting up my own wedding photography business in the same province as him this year and don’t want to jeopardize my business’ reputation.

Shortie — I am thrilled for you! I have happy-chills knowing that you’ll be able to have some gorgeous photos, even if your original photog sucked. And, BTW, way to take the high-ground, even though he was awful…

That’s very exciting, Shortie. That guy totally sucked. I’m so glad you’ll get a redo so that you get the fabulous photos you deserve. And good call on not giving he who shall not be named any publicity. Blech.

Aww, I feel for you on the photographer thing. The only thing my family remembers about my cousin’s wedding is that the photographer completely hijacked the wedding. We hardly got to see them, and when we did the photographer was always in the way!

What a bummer that he was so unprofessional. I’m very happy to hear that you’ll be retaking your photos, I’m sure they will be amazing. At least now you can use this experience to better your own business. You can make sure you never treat a bride and groom the way you were so rudely treated. Good luck… can’t wait to see your new pics! :)

I am so sorry that you had to go through this! We are actually on photographer #2. The first photographer we booked requested to be seated during dinner with the rest of our guests and eat the same food as our guests (while I am completely ok with providing meals to our vendors, I’m not ok with serving them $125 steak dinner). When I told him that there was a special vendor room and that they would be provided a very plentiful meal, he told me that if they weren’t served with the guests that they would have to leave the reception to eat dinner and charge us $100 per photographer for their meal. He called me a “bridezilla” and told me that if they didn’t get a good meal, there was no guarantee that our pictures would turn out as well as they could. Needless to say I was appalled by the situation and to this day am still upset! We lost our $500 deposit, but on the flipside, luckily have booked an absolutely wonderful and sweet photographer now.

Thanks for sharing that, Shortcake, and I agree with the others re: taking the high ground. You are earning karma points by not trashing your (admittedly bad, nonetheless) photog. Best of luck for your new pics! Will you share any other photos from your original day? (Non prof, too.)

That sucks that your photographer was an a-hole.

At least you can retake the pictures of you and your husband. Congrats on the new photographer!

I know that it’s not the same but at least you can have pictures of the two of you looking happy.

Can’t wait to see them!

Wow, you took such a bad situation and made something so great out of it! Good for you. Those photos are beautiful and I know you will be happy with your new set, even if they don’t have family members. I’m agonizing about photographers now since my wedding is coming up way too soon and I haven’t chosen one yet! I have it down to a few promising choices on
http://www.gatheringguide.com/ec/photographers.html, but your blog has given me faith that even if one of them blows it, I can still have a second chance. And funny stories years later!

So sad to hear that your original wedding photos didn’t turn out. I’d love to hear more about what the photographer did that ruined the photos. In any case, glad you have the op to do a redo, even though it isn’t the real thing!
