Evolution of a Menu Card

December 5th, 2008 @ 10:24 am by Ms Fondue

Back in March, I knew exactly how I wanted our menu cards to look.

Source: just_JRM on The Knot

I bought these lovely red chargers after Linens ’N Things declared bankruptcy, so I got them for 20% off.

And then I went to work designing the menu cards. I bought some white imprintable cards from Paper Presentation. My first attempt was basically just to see how everything would fit on the 5×5 circular cards.

Then I started playing around with what I could do on the edge of the cards. Despite not having dots anywhere else in the wedding, I really liked them on the inspiration picture, so I used them in my designs.

Mr. Fondue and I had narrowed it down to these two:

However, then everything changed. We decided to have a sit-down dinner instead of a buffet, and we needed a way to indicate which dish our guests chose. With the choice of our table names, we decided to go a different route.

By this time, I had seen lots of photos of the long menu cards, either tucked in napkins or laying on top of them, and this was now my new favorite menu card style. So, I designed something that was similar to our invitation design; however, I’m not embossing these, just printing them flat.

At first, we thought we might let the menu card double as a place card. The menu would only list the entree that had been chosen when the guest RSVPed.

However, Mr. Fondue really wanted to incorporate a character for each guest from the game series their table was named after, and I also realized that I had left the side dishes off the menu. Mr. Fondue suggested leaving the names off and, instead, create a ribbon belly band around the napkin and the menu card. Then a card would be attached to the belly band listing the guest’s name and a picture of a character from the series their table is named after. Here are a couple ways I’m considering doing this (that’s not a real napkin, just a scrap piece of muslin I cut to size):

If we went this route, I’d probably add a black backing behind the name card:

We are actually doing something very similar to our invitations (the card on the outside of the belly band will serve as the inner envelope), so it really ties everything together nicely.

So the current incarnations look like this:

See how there is a different entree listed on each? This way the waitstaff will know what to bring to that seat. The kids will get something slightly different, along with a couple of crayons:

These are all a prototype and subject to change before they are actually printed. I’m probably going to make our Color-Me-Miis have slightly thinner lines and draw out their feet. Writing that out just made me want to change “Color Me” to “Color Mii”, haha.

Which of your projects went through many evolutions?

The chargers and menus look great and will coordinate wonderfully! I especially love the menu for kids where they can color your Miis. Great idea!

Those look great! Are you going to print the damask pattern, or stamp it?

I have to say though, I’m not sure how easy it’s going to be for the waitstaff to tell who has which main course … are they meant to go around asking everyone to show them their menu?

How many meal choices are there? Could you use some kind of colour-code system?

I also love the menus for the kids to color. Very cute idea!!

The chargers and menus look great. I like the first menu/napkin combination.

What a pretty damask pattern!! I love the menus… but must agree with Lou - the waitstaff will have a hard time with the menus. Color-coding is a much more efficient way to do it (ie. red for beef, black for chicken… or whatever).

First and foremost, very pretty…

Second as a former wedding planner at a hotel, I would say you want to make sure that you do a table layout, with each persons name and their entree choice on it so that when the planner put the menu cards out there are no ifs ands or buts.

And as a pratical matter… people change seats, so dont be surprised if the way you put people at the tables are not how they look once sat.

And also give your guests time to find their names… make sure you build that time into the transition from the cocktail hour to the dinner.

Everything looks so pretty! I also agree about making it easier for waitstaff to see…how many meal choices are there? could you do red damask for one, and black for another, so it’s easy to see? or even in the print on the name in front? or the ribbon? looks great!

miss fondue, that fourth circular menu is exactly what mine looked like at our october wedding with the exception of the fonts. i printed them on regular paper and cut each one out on my own with one of those circular trimmers. what a job! totally worth it, but it took forever. how funny that it’s pretty much the same one.

Hi, I love your idea, but I wonder if there would be a faster way for the waiters to know who to serve what. What if you put just their names in different colors (red & black) based on their dish.

I also agree with some of the other posters, having worked weddings for 6 years as a server I can tell you that the staff wont really have time to read each card and as a waitress you are trying to figure out who gets what in a hurry to keep everything warm and things on schedule. I would also recommend something very visual that they can see easily such as a different colored stamp on the menus for one entree vs. another.

That is such a cute idea to have something for the kids to color right on the menu card. Love it!

Wow! You are very talented! I love all your menu cards especially the circular one. I would love to do something similar to the circular one because I’m thinking of having a circle theme at the reception. Would you mind sharing the template you used to create the circular menu? I can’t wait to see your wedding photos.
Thanks in advance for your help!
