Wedding Gifts on the Cheap

December 6th, 2008 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Powder Puff

I don’t know about you all, but it seems like a million and one people I know are getting married. And that means a million and one weddings to attend in the next couple of years. Yowza.

I love weddings, especially when it’s my dear friends getting married, but I do not love how much it costs to attend. Airfares, hotel rooms, gifts… it adds up really fast! So while I have no good advice about the airfare or the hotel room, I DO have some good tips for finding meaningful, cute wedding gifts on the cheap!

One of the best gifts, that packs a lot of bang for your buck, is Christmas decorations! No, seriously. Think about it. If you’re anything like me, you have a whopping ZERO Christmas decorations to bring into your marriage. And since decorations and the like are practically free after the holidays are over, now is a good time to stock up!

Check out these adorable stockings. Choose the happy couple’s new initials, and you have a great gift all for a whopping $11 from Target.

Or maybe these small silver trees, from one of my favorites, CB2, which cost from $7 to $15. Cute!

Ornaments are always a good choice. Here’s a gorgeous option from Paloma’s Nest for only $16.

These ideas can, of course, be adopted to your couple’s religious beliefs. Happy shopping!

Do you have any ideas for cheap wedding presents?

I love the idea of Christmas presents for wedding gifts!
They have so many personalized things from our frist Christmas to our first home and how nice that it would be something that they could be able to use every year!
I think that I will be using this as a gifting idea for many weddings to come!
As for cheap wedding (or any reason) gifts I like to take and get a few small kitchen items and package them together with something that can be made in them.
I will do a mixing bowl, a cake pan, a wooden spoon, and a box of cake mix, put it all together and tie it up with a bow and there you go! You can also to the bowl, spoon and a cookie sheet with a cookie cook book.
Thanks again for reminding us all of the things that we don’t think about people needing!

That is cute and really smart!

I like doing themed gifts, just like what thefuturemrsjohnson said with the cake package. You buy smaller items, turn them into something meaningful and it can actually save money as opposed to buying a large ticket item.

I also like HomeGoods. They have really great platters and serverware that are a lot less expensive than department stores.

Another idea is if you have a talent, helping the bride and groom out in some way as a gift. For example, My fiance and I each have cousins who we plan to ask to sing/play the piano at our ceremony. So we think it would be awesome if they would just consider that our gift, because it will save all of us money.

that’s such a cute idea! my sisters and i have those stockings with out initials at out parents’ house, and i love coming home and decorating. i have been trying to collect things that i know i can call mine so i can take them with me when i’m married, but there sure isn’t much.

one thing, however, is that there are many different ways to decorate for christmas. i have a specific “look” in mind, and some decorations just won’t fit into that style. i guess this would be the same as anything you might buy off-registry, but a great ideal all the same.

I agree 100%- not only was this past summer a busy one wedding-wise (I was in to weddings, and attending an additional two!), but 2009 is shaping up to be our busiest one yet (4 “booked” weddings, + our own, and I have a feeling more will follow after the xmas proposal season!!!).

I love the after xmas sales for wedding gifts. Here in Toronto there are a lot of warehouse sales for crystal and whatnot between now and March-ish so they are definitely on my radar. The other thing w/ the ornaments is that they can look gorgeous attached to the outside of gift bags/ gift boxes or even envelopes as a little something extra.

I also love everything from Paloma’s nest including the ring bowls.

Another thing I’m using this season for is for cheap decor for my own wedding (silver is an accent), so I am envisioning silver xmas balls in a tall, clear vase as well as silver chargers I have sourced out at dollar stores (either as a centre piece base, or for our chocolate/candy buffet).

I tend to try and buy from registries, and aim to purchase a gift around $35 - $50…

A semi cheap gift I always give friends who get married are a set of monogrammed towels… I have a friend whose mom does the monogramming for pretty cheap and I buy the towels at Target… the gift costs me around $45 and they look professionally done.

I prefer to buy from registries so I don’t accidentally offend, but Xmas decor really does make great gifts on the cheap.

Video games are my new favorite, though only if they’re on the registry to prove the couple’s cool with that sort of thing and so I know what they already have. On the lower end of the price spectrum, they represent hours of fun for the couple to have together, hopefully with me, too, if I’m local for them.
