About Mrs. Peep Toe

My favorite flowers of all time are dahlias. I heart them. I mean just look at how pretty they look at this wedding:

One of the first things I did when we were trying to set a date was to find out when dahlias would be available for our wedding. And not just any dahlias, organic dahlias. I knew that a very easy green element would be to have local, seasonal, organic flowers.

So I started my hunt for an organic florist, and I found two contenders:

Bonny Doon Garden Company. Bonny Doon is a great farm/garden down near Santa Cruz, and I think we would have gone with them if we had gotten married in Carmel or Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, they would not have organic dahlias available until the end of summer and we were planning a spring wedding.

California Organic Flowers. Mr. Peep Toe’s go to when he has flowers delivered to me at work. I highly recommend them. They hope to have organic dahlias available the week of Memorial Day. But I was afraid once I got them, I would have no idea what to do with them.

In the midst of my searching for organic flowers, I got an email from the owner of Bonny Doon. The New York Times was doing an article on organic flowers and weddings. They wanted to interview me* to find out why I was in search of organic flowers. I was a little embarrassed since I was so new to the whole wedding planning thing, but I went with it.

So, on February 3, 2008, I was quoted in the NY Times! Probably a wedding highlight to date!

Have you found yourself in a surprising position while you have been wedding planning? Have you scheduled your wedding around a certain element?

*yes, little old me!!

Hahaha. How cute! You got the final say in that article! You should get the newspaper and cut out the article to put in your wedding album or something! So much fun to see your own name in the NY Times huh? I know I would get a kick out of it!!! (Little did the New York Times know they were interviewing a future WeddingBee featured Bride- How lucky are they?!)

As a wedding photographer I truly appreciate how gorgeous Dahlia’s look in a simple bouquet!!

Thanks for link to Bonny Doon Garden Company, I am in San Jose, CA just right on the other side of the hill and will definitely be adding BDG company to my list of referrals for brides asking.

I love your blog it’s always very insightful.

dude, that is soooo cool! I love it! And the article was great. Now I’m going to be asking my florist if we can keep it to mostly organic blooms. This is something I’ve never thought about before. Thanks!

Did any florists recommend that you didn’t use dahlias? We had originally planned on having dahlias but our florist told us that they tend to “fade” quickly once out of the refrigeration and put into bouquets, and also touching them too much tends to turn them brown faster. I don’t know if organic flowers are different, nor do I know if this is all true….but you might want to ask before you spend lots of $$ on them! I love dahlias anyway!

Hi Miss Peep Toe,

A former client showed me your blog. The photo of the wedding with the dahlia above is from my website. I was the florist. Glad you like it! Would you mind giving my company (La Partie Events) credit and providing a link to my website if you’re going to use the photo?

Thanks and I look forward to reading more of your blog!

Those dahlias are gorgeous. And being quoted in the NYT is every Cambridge liberal’s dream . . . .

@Mariana, glad you like the post and Bonny Doon is great!

@dreambml, you’re right- dahlias are fragile. We can’t use them for everything- like the Men’s boutonnieres.

@Megan, thank you so much for the source info- I love your flowers!! So Great!!

Thank you, Miss Peep Toe! And yes, dahlias are extremely fragile so I can understand why some florists might want to avoid them. I can’t though. They’re just too cool! Meg :)

I’m so glad you posted this! I’ve been having a hard time finding a dahlia source for my 4th of July wedding. It seemed silly to me since my dahlias bloom in early July. But, unfortunately I don’t grow nearly enough to use for our wedding. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that there are dahlias in bloom in time for your wedding too!
