New Orleans Bound!

December 7th, 2008 @ 11:12 pm by Mrs. Bee

A friend and I are headed to New Orleans January 1st - 4th!

We’ve booked our room at the International House, and are planning out our itinerary.  While we’re there we’ll meet up with the Ballet Flats, visit Bourbon Street, eat at Cafe du Monde and check out a vampire tour (I need to read some Anne Rice and my recently purchased Sookie Stackhouse series to get in the vampire mood!).   Of course I’ll be back with tons of pictures and an extensive post on New Orleans as a possible minimoon/honeymoon destination! :)

So what are your recommendations on fabulous things to do, see and eat?

If you’re into gumbo, hush puppies etc you should check out acme oyster house off bourbon street. My friend and I really enjoyed it and I’d love to head back there! Enjoy New Orleans!

All meals are great here but I highly recommend the bruch. Get there when it opens or you will wait 30+min. Order anything with debris. It’s a locals place off the tourist areas.

For a great romantic dinner. Adolfo’s on Frenchman. Order anything with ocean sauce. i had the veal…yes, politically incorrect but incredibly tasty. I call frenchman the grown-ups Bourbon St. Great food, friendly people, mellow live jazz in every pub on the street.

Take note post Katrina nola many restaurant, including Adolfo’s, do not take credit. it’s cash only.

And take the gator air boat tour. The wetlands are beautiful

Crepes: If you find yourself on Bourbon around lunch time Petunias crepes are deliciuos and filling. Also the dining room is like a time machine…old new oreleans, daytime romantic without being kitchsy.

@MsUsUk:
Do not go to Acme Oyster House, I worked for the health dept for years and it’s notoriously a repeat offender for their oysters

I went to college in NOLA, and it was the best time of my life! It’s all about the food — get breakfast at Brennan’s (where Banana’s Foster was invented!), dinner at either Galatoire’s or Antoine’s. My favorite Emeril’s restaurant is NOLA.
If you have time, take the streetcar up St. Charles to visit the uptown/garden district area! My favorite restaurant in the whole city is there, Jacques-Imo’s (http://www.jacquesimoscafe.com/). It’s truly an experience.
For great shopping, you have to spend an afternoon on Magazine Street as well. My favorite store is Hazelnut, http://hazelnutneworleans.com/.

I second the Dante’s Kitchen recommendation!
And another favorite — way in the back of the French Quarter is a hole in the wall with the best burger you’ll ever have (waiting in line is part of the fun): Port of Call, http://www.portofcallneworleans.com/.

If you like history the WWII museum is amazing. The Zoo and Aquarium are really nice too. Like others have said spend some time on Magazine St. and Frenchman. You should really have a hurricane at Pat O’s and a Muffalatta at the Napoleon house in the Quarter or the Grocery on St. Charles. Make sure to take a Street car from Canal St. all the way down to Riverbend and back on the St. Charles line so you can properly soak up all of those old mansions. You are going to have such a blast! Looking forward to the post.

Associated with the zoo and aquarium there is also an insectarium there now! It’s really neat, and doesn’t have too take long (and you can sample fried bugs, if you’re feeling adventurous).

Also, if you rent a car, take half a day to drive out to the plantations. There is a trail of them, and they are all beautiful
(although in varied states of repair), and even if you don’t want to spend the money/time to go inside and do the tours, it’s a nice drive and you can see a wide variety of styles and tastes in just the exterior archetecture!

And of course, you have to wander the Garden District and check out the beautiful, historic homes downtown (including the one that belonged to Ann Rice).

And the rest of the French Quarter (ie. not Bourbon Street) is wonderful! There’s a ton of great food and antiques.

go on a swamp tour. as a native new orleanian, i thought it was pretty stupid until i had an out of town guest who insisted on it and i had so much fun. i got to hold the alligator and feed it swamp crack (marshmallows) and a couple of alligators were swimming in the water and hopped right on the swamp boat with us. it was such an amazing experience.

of course, you’ll have to go to court of two sisters for brunch and camillia grill and take a ride on the street car through the historic garden district/uptown area. it’s sad you won’t be there for the mardi gras season. king cake season starts January 6th, so make it a point to find RANDAZZO’S CREAM CHEESE STUFFED KING CAKE. this is the best. if you want, i will mail it to you! you have to have it! spend your time in the flea market and then walk right on over to cafe du monde for your beignets. you’ll catch a street performance right outside of the cafe du monde. most of the seating is outdoors, so check the weather and dress appropriately! from there, i would recommend walking further down (or driving because it’s a considerable walk!) to the Aquarium of the Americas. you can get a pass that lets you see the zoo and the aquarium. also, stop by tujagues at night for some zydeco music and great muffelattas!! Mother’s is a pretty popular breakfast joint and the line goes down around the building.

my parents restaurants are only three blocks from there! the international house is a nice place to stay. you can go to the bar there or you can walk down to whiskey blue which is across the street from mothers in the W hotel. nice crowd. you can then walk across the street to the swizzle stick bar or cafe adelaide in the Loews hotel. At lunch… they have twenty five cent martinis!! WOOHOO~

that’s all for now because i have a lot of work to get to this morning. hope you have fun and i get to run into you!

I third or fourth the Dante’s Kitchen recommendation. You can take the streetcar down St. Charles from the Quarter then up Carrollton Ave (where I live!). Brunch there is fabulous.

I can also second the do not go to Acme recommendation. It’s not the best on Bourbon. if you MUST eat on Bourbon Street, the Red Fish Grill is a crowd pleaser.

And for sure spend an afternoon in Audubon Park. It’s just a beautiful place to stroll and sit under the oaks, and the zoo is right there as well.

Then, shop on Magazine Street and go to The Bulldog for a pint.

Hope y’all enjoy my town!

Please don’t do an airboat tour, they are horrible for wildlife and their habitat. Enjoy the city!

Definitely try out the restaurants, go down Canal and Bourbon streets, and spend lots of time in the French Quarter! For food suggestions, check out go to Domilise’s and Willie Mae’s and Acme. (I like Acme, even despite any health violations).
