In Tribute to a Beautiful Lady

December 8th, 2008 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Cookie

At this time, I had hoped to be in the midst of finishing our wedding recaps. My apologies for my absence lately, but yesterday my Grandmother passed away.

Last Wednesday, I received news that my grandmother was losing her battle with cancer. Thanks to some frequent flyer miles, I was able to jump on a plane to Montana and say my good-byes. Her last few days would have been how she wanted, surrounded by her loved ones watching home videos and telling stories about the good ol’ days. Being a strong Norwegian woman she fought the cancer until the very end, and we are thankful that she is now at peace.

Although she was unable to make our wedding in September, she was with me. I pinned the doily that she crocheted for me under my wedding dress. She also called us during the reception to wish Mr. Cookie and I a happy life together.

I wanted to share with you this, the wedding photo of my grandparents in the early 40s. She truly was a beautiful woman inside and out. I am going to miss her cackling laugh, her lefse at Christmas, but more I will just miss her! Thanks Grandma for everything. I love you!

I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmother. I lost my grandmother the week before I graduated from college and I still miss her every day. You’ll always have her with you — each time you make one of her famous dishes, sit down to a holiday meal, smile and think of something you did together….and I have to say — you look quite a bit like her too!

I’m so sorry for your loss of your grandmother. My grandmother was 100% Norwegian and she made Lefse too! Did you ever have lutifisk at Christmas?!

I’m sorry to hear about your loss but it’s great you got to spend time with her beforehand. You look a lot like your grandmother from the pictures.

I am glad that you were able to visit one last time and that she was surrounded by family. If one has to go that is the way to do it. My prayers are with you and your family as you go through the holidays without her, I know how that is.

I am sorry for your loss. My grandmother also makes Lefse every year. We all join in and help. That last few years I have become very active in making it, in hopes of one day being able to carry the tradition on. I hope your family are able to carry on some of her traditions. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks you guys for your kind words and thoughts.

@Mrs. Pinot Noir: Lutifisk really wasn’t a favorite, as stinky and smelly as it is, so she didn’t make it that often. Although, her lefse was a hit! I can buy it at the grocery store, but it’s just not the same as grandma’s.

@Mia: What a wonderful way to learn how to make it and carry on the tradition! My grandma gave me the recipe and walked me through the process a few times, but I need to get a good lefse griddle like grandma’s in order to make it right.

I forgot to mention in the post about something very special she did for my brother’s weddings. My brothers are the last out of twelve grandchildren to get married. They are not engaged and will probably not be married for many years. As she knew she would not be around to send them a present, she prepared a wedding card and present for them before she passed. She was always thinking ahead!

I’m so sorry for your loss! My Grandma died in July and with the wedding in May, I’m still having a hard time dealing with the fact she won’t be there!

Thoughts and prayers to you and your family!

Aw, after spending several days with my beloved (and very elderly) grandmother at Thanksgiving, I can only imagine your sense of loss. How wonderful that you had such a strong family relationship, and so many special memories.

And count me in on the lefse crew … haven’t had it in years, but I miss it. Did you also have Kringle (not the Danish coffee-cake-like version, but the S-shaped kind-of-doughy cookies)? Suddenly I’m craving them — may have to search out a recipe.

Im sorry to hear about your grandmother. My grandmother passed when I was little but I will have her with me as well. I have a pin that spells her name that I will attach to my flowers. May she always be with you.
