Fatherly Advice

December 9th, 2008 @ 12:44 pm by Mrs. Dumpling

Sometimes when you least expect it, you get solid advice that is so simple, yet so hard to grip. Last weekend I went to Valdosta, Georgia to visit my dad for his annual holiday party. After all of the guests had left, we sat down to chat (really just an excuse so he could finish the last bottle of wine).

Here’s a shortened transcript of our conversation:

Dad: So, Miss Dumpling, how’s the wedding planning coming along?
Me: Oh, it’s stressful. I can’t get my gocco to print ink on dark paper, the bees think I could jazz up the Ferrero Rocher place cards a bit more, I just realized I only made enough invitations for 125 instead of the 150 I need, the pink in the stationery is strawberry, but the rest of the pink is blush colored…..
Dad: (mouth open, sorry he asked)
Me: blah, blah, yada yada yada, wedding, pink, flowers, blah wha-wha, gocco, WeddingBee, whine, on and on and on……..
Dad: Sweetie, please don’t over plan. Nobody will care if the pinks don’t match or if the programs use a different font than the invitations. You’re getting married either way. Ok? Now go fill up my wine glass.

It took me a few seconds before I realized that he actually did know what he was talking about. Three years ago at that very same holiday party, he stood up, and instead of giving a toast, he said “Surprise! Chris and I have decided to get married, and what better night than tonight, surrounded by all of our friends and families.”

There were no centerpieces, no flowers, no coordinating bridesmaids’ dresses, no violinists that needed to be flown in from LA, no pricey wedding shoes… just two people who wanted to get married.

I guess sometimes it takes your dad, brother, boss, or whomever you’d least expect, to put something into perspective for you. Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to “one-up” the fancy couple in the fancy bridal magazine (guilty!) that we forget that its just a party.

Thanks, Dad!

This is me and my dad this year, on their third anniversary.

Tell me about some of the people or situations that have put your wedding planning into perspective. Was it from somewhere you least expected?

My fiance is very practical and I thought having a fancy wedding wouldn’t mean anythin to him because he would not see it worth the cost, but whenever we plan together he doesn’t complain and when I am stressed about money, he asks if it will really make me happy and says go for it. Not the reaction I expected from Mr. Practical.

His reactions to all of my outlandish wedding wishes has made me rethink things. I feel so lucky that he would put aside his practicality to make me happy because I have been dreaming of this day forever. I have realized that no matter how much we spend that day it isn’t about the things, it is about marrying someone who cares so much for me.

Thank you, I needed this post right now. Idiot that I am, I bought a New York Wedding magazine yesterday, which then convinced me that every single thing I was planning was cliche, boring, and not nearly good enough. Thank you.

our situation was hurricane Ike ravaging our home. It was 10 days before our wedding and I still had lots to do. But when you have half of your house gone, those programs and menue cards dont seem important anymore.
I now consider myself lucky because I was able to marry the man I love. Some people lost loved ones in the hurricane, some entire homes. I have my hubby and my half of a house. I couldnt be more grateful.

A friend of ours was planning her wedding and said ” I think of it like this. I have $5,000 to plan a party, that is awesome!” And ever since I have kept reminding myself of that. It is just a party. Her reception ended up being the best reception my fiance and I had ever been to and afterwards we couldn’t stop saying “we want our wedding to be just like this!”

I’m more intrigued that you were in Valdosta since that is where I live. You don’t hear of many people that know where it is! :)

That’s so cool that your dad got married right there on the spot! :) My cousin’s wife warned me not to throw too many expectations on one day. While I love planning (and it has been a great way to keep my spirits up after losing my job), I think that I will be able to let it all go and just enjoy the day. :)

Mr. Peep and I wanted to do that at our engagement party, but a few essential folks weren’t going to be there. I love that they did that!! So cute.

My Dad said that we shouldn’t spend too much time and money on one day that is going to end up being frustrating at worst, and a blur at best. He said the honeymoon is a better place to spend money, and I agree! I really thought once I became a bride I would freak out over things, but I’m really not. Maybe it’s because the wedding is 11 months out, but I’m just dealing with things as they come and not worrying too much.
