Photo Albums

December 9th, 2008 @ 11:50 am by Mrs. Onion

Almost nine months ago I posted about procrastinating on making a wedding album. There are a million excuses, but the bottom line now is that $1000+ for a professional album just isn’t in the budget. We just got our hi-res photos from our photographers in October and with Christmas fast approaching, I decided to use that deadline as motivation to get me started.

Over the weekend Mr. Onion and I headed to Kate’s Paperie and bought one of each of these beautiful albums. I really love them. One for my mother-in-law, one for my mother and the large one for our album. I was hoping to find brown photo corners on-line (what can’t you get on-line these days?), but I’ve met with defeat. I decided to settle on a combination of Kraft colored corners and clear corners (per Miss Hot Cocoa’s recommendation).

I spent hours (and I mean hours) over the weekend uploading about 350 hi-resolution images to MPix.com where I ordered Mr. Onion’s wedding gift from last summer. The quality of the book was great so I trust the quality of the prints will be fantastic. They were a little pricey ($.29 per 4×6 print), but for albums I hope we’ll all have for years to come, I decided not to cut corners on the photos.

Cost break down:

Albums:
Small (6.25″ x 7.5″) = $45
Medium (10.5″ square) = $105
Large (12″ x 12.25″) = $132

Prints:
Approximately 400 = $155.07
Shipping = $5.95
Total = $161.02

Supplies:
Kolo Photo Corners: 5 boxes of 240 corners = approximately $36
Kolo Photo Tape: 1 roll = $8

Grand total for 3 albums = $487.02

If anyone has suggestions for photo corners (know where I can get brown corners other than the beautiful and expensive Martha Stewart satin), or photo tape, or any tips on making your own album look great and hold up to years of page turns… please share! I’m nervous about this project.

Is anyone else attempting to make their own albums?

Did you check out your local scrapbook store? They might have some suggestions.

Oh yay! Mpix! I am so curious about this! Are the prints really professional quality (i.e. clarity and thickness of paper)? Did you make an album through this website? How was it to use their album-making software? Do you think MPix is better to use than Blurb or MyPublisher? Any info in this area is appreciated!

Very pretty albums. Good choice with the print developer too. I love mpix, WHCC, and Miller’s.

RE: brown photo corners. I remember Chatterbox and American Crafts having brown. Those are two scrapbooking companies. I’ll keep googling.

In the scrapbooking section section there will be a ton of ideas for securing them. I love glue dots myself. ;)

If it’s not too late, the Martha Stewart Collection sells brown photo corners. They are made out of satin ribbon, but if I remember right you see the less shiny side. Just a suggestion, I loved them when I saw them:)

And, I should learn to read, I got excited and skipped to the bottom:) Maybe michael’s coupons would cut the cost?

If you have a local Archiver’s, I would check them out! What a great and cost effective idea…3 albums for less than the price of one!

I made my own hardcover blurb book (after being inspired by a weddingbee post on it written by Mrs. Bellpepper on 12/11/07. I’d post the link but I don’t know if my comment would go through.

Anyway, it is hardcover, almost 100 pages, and ABSOLUTELY gorgeous. The paper quality is amazing (and now they even offer a paper upgrade) and the whole thing WITH SHIPPING was only $108!

Ooh, I want brown photo corners for my invitations, let me know if there are more good leads! And has anyone ever tried to make their own photo corners from ribbon and a Xyron machine?
