Short Hair-spiration

December 9th, 2008 @ 5:06 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

I have short hair. I absolutely lurve it, and am not planning on growing it out for the wedding. There, I said it!

When I first got engaged, I decided that since there seems to be a complete absence of short-haired beauties in wedding magazines, I should grow out my locks to be like them - more “bride” like. This did not go well. I look hooorrrrible with long hair, which is mostly my fault since I hate styling it. When my hair was longer, I would pull it back every single day. This left me feeling ugly and unkept. Blah!

Then I started to think about this whole hair thing. What was I growing it out for? For one stinkin’ day. Do I want to endure another seven months of bad hair days for one short day?! No way! So I immediately made an appointment with my stylist to end the madness.

Here’s my current (and probably permanent) do:

Now the obvious question is, what am I going to do for the wedding?

There is sadly a very small selection of short hairstyles for brides out there. Luckily, the photos I’ve found have been a huge help, and have given me a lot to think about. Here’s what I’ve found thus far.

Option #1: Wavy

My hair is naturally wavy, so this is what it would look like if I didn’t blow dry it straight. Seems like a good option for July in Michigan, which can get a smidge humid.

Option #2: Straight

Straight is an easy choice. I like the way my hair looks straight, and my hairdresser knows how to make it really straight. Like, never-going-to-curl-again straight. I love her.

Option #3: Half up

I like this because it gets my hair out of my face, and I could go wavy or straight. This style will probably give my veil and fascinator a bit more sturdiness too, don’t you think?

Any other short-haired brides out there? What are you doing with your hair for your wedding?

Short curly bob bride here! I’m leaving it mostly down, curly, with a lil pinned at the crown so i can tack my veil in. It will look completely down from the front–I’d show you a picture, but there are none!

Love the short hair!! My hair stylist really got my natural curls going and with a side part and a floral hair pin, it was exactly the vintage look I was going for!

Shortie here! I like 1 and 3 the best. I’m growing mine out juuust a smidge, but I plan on having my FI’s sister (who does hair for a living) play around with it about 9 months before the wedding so I know if I should keep growing or stay at my current length. Glad to see a woman who is keeping her short hair!!

I like the straight look, with a bit of body. Really chic.

i like your decision and there are totally lots of cute short hair styles out there. my hair is medium length and i’m thinking of keeping it the same length rather than growing it out.

I love the first option. so modern and sassy. and you know, if at the last minute you feel like you really do want long hair for the wedding day, there are some great clip in extensions that aren’t super expensive. check out jessica simpson’s line of extensions. they’re surprisingly really great.

honestly, i only like the straight option.. and i really don’t even like that. maybe its just because i feel like your wedding day is one of the only days ever where everyone is focused on you so why not do it big?!?! so, anyway, i think you should do fingerwaves. i have short hair, too and i love all things vintage, so when i saw this picture i jsut knew this was what i wanted. hope it helps.

I did the post wedding chop after our wedding in June. When we had our trash the dress shoot, my hair was just about touching my shoulders, and I wanted something different and down for the shoot (since it was up for the wedding). I ended out having my girl 3 barrell roll my hair which made it look full and sexy. Not sure if that’s a look you would consider, but it looked beautiful worn down and pinned back. It’s certainly something to consider. But I think it would look great straight too! Are you wearing a veil?

It’s hard to decide without knowing what yuor dress looks like. I know about the birdcage veil from your previous posts, and I have to say that the simply the hair, the better as you’re already adding a wow-full accessory that your hair shouldn’t really compete with. Also, why spend the time and money on a consult and appointment for a semi-complicated half up-do that your fascinator will cover, or take attention away from. I would go with wavy, since I prefer when brides really look like themselves on their wedding days!
