Short Hair-spiration

December 9th, 2008 @ 5:06 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

I have short hair. I absolutely lurve it, and am not planning on growing it out for the wedding. There, I said it!

When I first got engaged, I decided that since there seems to be a complete absence of short-haired beauties in wedding magazines, I should grow out my locks to be like them - more “bride” like. This did not go well. I look hooorrrrible with long hair, which is mostly my fault since I hate styling it. When my hair was longer, I would pull it back every single day. This left me feeling ugly and unkept. Blah!

Then I started to think about this whole hair thing. What was I growing it out for? For one stinkin’ day. Do I want to endure another seven months of bad hair days for one short day?! No way! So I immediately made an appointment with my stylist to end the madness.

Here’s my current (and probably permanent) do:

Now the obvious question is, what am I going to do for the wedding?

There is sadly a very small selection of short hairstyles for brides out there. Luckily, the photos I’ve found have been a huge help, and have given me a lot to think about. Here’s what I’ve found thus far.

Option #1: Wavy

My hair is naturally wavy, so this is what it would look like if I didn’t blow dry it straight. Seems like a good option for July in Michigan, which can get a smidge humid.

Option #2: Straight

Straight is an easy choice. I like the way my hair looks straight, and my hairdresser knows how to make it really straight. Like, never-going-to-curl-again straight. I love her.

Option #3: Half up

I like this because it gets my hair out of my face, and I could go wavy or straight. This style will probably give my veil and fascinator a bit more sturdiness too, don’t you think?

Any other short-haired brides out there? What are you doing with your hair for your wedding?

Short curly bob bride here! I’m leaving it mostly down, curly, with a lil pinned at the crown so i can tack my veil in. It will look completely down from the front–I’d show you a picture, but there are none!

Love the short hair!! My hair stylist really got my natural curls going and with a side part and a floral hair pin, it was exactly the vintage look I was going for!

Shortie here! I like 1 and 3 the best. I’m growing mine out juuust a smidge, but I plan on having my FI’s sister (who does hair for a living) play around with it about 9 months before the wedding so I know if I should keep growing or stay at my current length. Glad to see a woman who is keeping her short hair!!

I like the straight look, with a bit of body. Really chic.

i like your decision and there are totally lots of cute short hair styles out there. my hair is medium length and i’m thinking of keeping it the same length rather than growing it out.

I love the first option. so modern and sassy. and you know, if at the last minute you feel like you really do want long hair for the wedding day, there are some great clip in extensions that aren’t super expensive. check out jessica simpson’s line of extensions. they’re surprisingly really great.

honestly, i only like the straight option.. and i really don’t even like that. maybe its just because i feel like your wedding day is one of the only days ever where everyone is focused on you so why not do it big?!?! so, anyway, i think you should do fingerwaves. i have short hair, too and i love all things vintage, so when i saw this picture i jsut knew this was what i wanted. hope it helps.

I did the post wedding chop after our wedding in June. When we had our trash the dress shoot, my hair was just about touching my shoulders, and I wanted something different and down for the shoot (since it was up for the wedding). I ended out having my girl 3 barrell roll my hair which made it look full and sexy. Not sure if that’s a look you would consider, but it looked beautiful worn down and pinned back. It’s certainly something to consider. But I think it would look great straight too! Are you wearing a veil?

It’s hard to decide without knowing what yuor dress looks like. I know about the birdcage veil from your previous posts, and I have to say that the simply the hair, the better as you’re already adding a wow-full accessory that your hair shouldn’t really compete with. Also, why spend the time and money on a consult and appointment for a semi-complicated half up-do that your fascinator will cover, or take attention away from. I would go with wavy, since I prefer when brides really look like themselves on their wedding days!

Thank you! I decided not to grow my hair out since i feel much more confident with short hair, but I’ve been worried about making my hair accessories and veil fit. I really really like the half up, it’s my new inspiration!

I, like Miss D, did the pre-wedding chop and cut off about five inches. I couldn’t stand it any longer!! You look awesome with short hair and I love option #1!

This is completely off-topic, but we have the shame shaped nose. I didn’t think anyone else did, so its like seeing a long-lost twin, LOL. Did you wear glasses as a kid?

+1 on the Charlize ‘do! LOVE it!

Definitely half up! It’s very elegant and fancier than your normal style (if you’re going for fancier) and it definitely will look good with your veil and anything else that you put in your hair.

i love the wavy look! but it’s true what you said about the veil so perhaps the half up half down & wavy would be perfect!!! :)

I love the half up look. I am in the same boat as you. No yucky hairstyle for 6-8 months just for the wedding day!!

thanks for the ideas!

I chopped my hair off in June and got engaged in July! Errr. I’m not really sure what I’m going to do. I have the same cut as you but my hair doesn’t grow fast. I think I might get a weave for that day and rock a Tyra do!

I don’t know why so many brides think they *have* to have long hair. Mine has been chin to shoulder length for years and years, and I didn’t even think about going longer - it just wouldn’t look like me. I just had my stylist play with my hair with the veil in advance in order to figure out what would look good; she did my hair the morning of the wedding, and it was fantastic.

@Miss Powder Puff: Yeah, I wore glasses, too. I think the edge of the bones in my nose grew so fast, they flared around the setting on the glasses. Kind of crazy that there’s someone else in the world with such a similar nose! Mine’s definitely much more pronounced, plus I was a major bulbous tip! :D

Anyways, I hope you find a good one! I’m probably going to have to get extensions in my hair anyways cause I want a crazy, thick updo. I really love the short ideas, though. Very vintage!

@Anonymous: That photo of Charlize is not really finger waves. Those would be considered pin curls kind of. Just so you don’t go in and ask for finger waves (very different and not as soft).

THANK YOU for this post! I am getting married the weekend before you and just had my lonnnnnnnnggggg hair chopped off (inadvertently-formerly beloved hair stylist was busy and not paying attention…) and have been positively FREAKED OUT by it. My fiance doesn’t understand why I’m so upset about hair, but it’s not just hair–it’s wedding hair. This post has given me inspiration, though. Mine is naturally wavy too, and I’m *really* digging option 1. Thanks again! You have no idea the peace you have brought to my mind.

I have just spent the last hour online looking for short haired inspiration and stumbled upon your post………i even found a site that said, ‘having short hair for your wedding isn’t the end of the world’………isnt’ that nice of them?

mine’s even shorter than yours…..well, i know that come June when I have a panic-attack-i’m-too-hott moment it will be and i’m ok with that cause long hair on me = big hair….yikes!

good luck! i vote the combo pic in the middle that way it isn’t too different from your usual look…….

I have NO idea! I am the opposite though, I have NEVER (to my great disappointment) been able to grow my hair past my shoulders. i have been desperate to have long hair my whole life. SO for the past 2 years, I have been on a mission to force my hair to grow out, and this was kicked into high gear right before we got engaged. So far, since January (I’ll start there since I can’t remember the last time I actually had it “cut”) it has grown a total of maybe 2inches… It was at my ear lobes I think, and now it’s about an inch below my jaw- still about 2 inches till my shoulder. My hairdresser assures me it will be shoulder length or longer by May (9 months- I guess it’s plausible), but she keeps asking how we’re going to style it for the big day. I have NO idea because I have NO idea how long it will be! *Sigh* In any case I am thinking half up, half down, because lately it’s been looking fab that way, and my hair is SO fine that I need something for the veil to hold on to or it just falls out!
