About Miss Snapdragon

Starry, Starry Snapdragons

December 9th, 2008 @ 3:20 pm by Miss Snapdragon

The Snapdragon wedding has undergone many permutations throughout the course of our planning, the latest of which being our “theme”, for lack of a better word. Originally, I gravitated to what I could only describe as Urban Vintage, an Anthropologie-esque interpretation of Vaseline glass, Victorian watercolors, tulle, and delicate colors. The problem was… I kept gravitating to bold colors and more graphic shapes. As you can see by our invitation mockup, urban vintage is not exactly what I would use to describe our design. The midnight blues, purples, golds and cranberries felt right though. Images of stars and chandeliers also began to take over the design. SO, we renovated our overall thoughts on the look of our wedding…

I have a real love and appreciation for art. My family is full of truly talented artists: musicians, writers, actors, and the like. I grew up expressing myself through painting, especially the Masters - Michelangelo being my favorite. I would spend hours and hours studying anatomy books to emulate my idol, and I loved to recreate his frescoes in 2D form. (Not that I was any professional artist, by any means - I just loved it as a hobby!) Another favorite of mine is Van Gogh. I love art that is abstract - works that capture the essence of their subject, rather than a literal translation. I love the emotion he communicates through his masterpieces.

My best description of our wedding is “Starry, Starry Night”. I don’t know that our guests will ever guess that this is the foundation of our decor choices, but it will help us in keeping the FEELING of our wedding cohesive. We’ll use representations of stars throughout, midnight blues as a main color, and lots and lots of candles. The fact that the wall-to-wall windows in our venue will showcase the white lights strung in the trees will also play nicely with this theme. Irises will conveniently be in bloom in June (Mr. Dragon LOVES Irises). This theme also allows us to incorporate the Van Goghs that I love the most, both literally and in spirit. (Don’t worry, I won’t play my hand too heavily!)

I feel really good about our choice - it feels romantic, emotional, colorful, beautiful, and meaningful.

Did you choose an unconventional “theme” for you wedding?? Did you change your look multiple times?

I went through several ups and downs with my theme and color choices. At first it was going to be green, gold and cream. Then it changed to purple and silver. Then I needed a focus, whether monograms on everything, black tie and then I landed on birds and trees. Now everything is purple, silver or a bird or tree. Crazy, Yes! Inspired, yes! Think midsummer night’s dream….. very fanciful.

I haven’t changed the look/theme since we got engaged, but it had defintely changed over the past few years. I used to want the princess look, but chanegd to go for a beach theme because it is more us.

Yay!

I’m a Van Gogh bride too! I love the classy whimsy and natural flow of colors!

I picked my colors out of starry night, not my favorite van gogh, but I love blue and it has so much of it, that I figured it would be the best color palette.

I love the Van Gogh theme! What a gorgeous wedding it will be, I can’t wait!

Our theme is very unconventional, but I just adore it. Magic Carpet Ride, yo!

Those colors will be beautiful! I never thought of putting together a palette from a favorite painting.

I was originally thinking bright and kind of quirky- think red and aqua, or orange and aqua, with jars of vintage candy and a cotton candy machine.

We’ve since decided on robin’s egg blue and slate gray as our colors, with pale yellow/cream as accent colors. We’re going with sort of a simple, vintage vibe, with glass jars, doilies, vintage paper, and old buttons making up the centerpieces and table decor. Haven’t quite flushed it out, but I’m gravitating toward white and cream for the tables- I always thought I was a bright color girl!

I love that you are moving away from the traditional train of thought that involves the idea that brides should pick “colors” and then stay within those colors no matter what. I think the wedding which revolve around a subtle theme are so much more natural and pretty.

Miss Snapdragon–yesterday I was in Barnes & Nobles checking out the bargain books section and thought that it might be interesting/useful somehow to buy one of those Van Gogh $10 art books and use the prints in the book to cut up for a project. Or even using a poster of Starry, Starry Night–to make interesting cutouts to embellish something
