Mrs. Milkshake, Seattle/Vancouver, BC Age and Occupation: 23, Pharmacist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Pharmacist Engagement Date: May 2007 Wedding Date: August 2008 Blogging Since: December 6, 2007 Venue: Victorian Mansion About Me: Despite the fact that I’ve invested many long years of my life studying the sciences in college, I’m glad to be out of there and I would never do it again! I’m super artsy at heart - I run an indie craft site, I grew up shooting and developing my own film, doing jazz and ballet, and the whole gamut of art classes. I’ve been called a Jane of all Trades… but I was also told many years ago not to make my passion my career because it’d suck the fun out of it. Hence my choice of day job. Phew! Long time no post! I thought I would backtrack and blog about a few things pre-wedding before I inundated you all with my pro pics from the big day. My hair actually turned out very lovely the first time around… my mom’s and my maid of honor’s, though, not so much. To be fair, the above photo wasn’t Vanessa’s finished product, although it does capture the end result for my mom. And the words that came to mind were: Big, Southern hair.

My Maid of Honor chop, chop, chopped her hair down within a couple weeks of the wedding with no qualms from me whatsoever. This, however, proved to be quite the unwelcome challenge for my mother’s hairdresser friend.

Vanessa had been beyond patient with me with many things, but I think this was the only legitimate “I’m not impressed” look I received from her through the whole wedding ordeal.

A little more fussing, and voila!

Not quite as Elvis-like, although not quite the idea we had been going for. Actually, now that I look at the file names, this hairstyle actually came before the huge Elvis heights were reached, and in all the images I have of the end result, I managed to chop out the voluminous mass of hair in my trademark “why-do-you-always-cut-off-everyone’s-foreheads” style. In the end, we concluded her hair was way too short to attempt anything but free-flowing curls, which she thoroughly enjoyed on the big day.

Did anyone avoid any hair disasters because of a hair trial?

I had a really bad hairstyle as a bridesmaid four years ago! They took my hair and separated it into dozens of tiny sections, twisted the sections, then twirled them all up and pinned them coming out of the top of my head. I looked like Medusa!!!
I remember the hair stylist saying to me”ooh, you look kind of funky, we are going to experiment with you!” All of the other girls had pretty, smooth up do’s, and mine looked ghastly! The bride was ok with it though, which was the main thing.

@Miss Taffy: I had a stylist say the SAME THING to me! My hair was horrible and everyone else’s was lovely, I was so jealous :-/

Your mom is so adorable. And let me just say that I would have killed for those bangs in 6th grade!! ;-)

I really don’t like it when you can see all the products on the bride’s hair. You can see that if you touch it, it would crackle.

Can’t wait for your pro pics!

The same thing happened to me as a bridesmaid about a month ago, except it was both the hair AND the makeup! I have really long, thick hair and somehow, the hairdresser managed to tuck all of my hair in a few small buns underneath the side-swept beehive thing she did. To top it off, she decided to give me the sultry eye look and basically covered my eyelids in dark gray/black eyeshadow. I sat in front of a floor-length mirror and watched helplessly as she

oops! I accidentally pressed “enter!”

Basically, the bride was right in front of me smiling proudly and telling me I looked beautiful, even though the makeup artist brushed black mascara on my already dark eyebrows and smeared black eyeliner under my eyelashes. It was her day, so I didn’t say anything. For the record, my fiance said I looked like a beautiful raccoon. At least he was honest! :)

Here’s a link to a similar hairdo, minus the bangs:

When I was MOH in my sister’s wedding, our hairdresser tried to match our hairstyles. Problem is, we have very different hair (mine’s thick and wavy, her hair is fine and straight) and different face shapes. She looked gorgeous with a Grace-Kelly esque updo. Mine made my face look chubby because she tried to pull everything in as tight as she could (it was maybe shoulder length at the time which didn’t give her much to work with) and hairsprayed it within an inch of its life so it ended up being totally flat against my head. Bleah.
