Bag Borrow or Steal

December 10th, 2008 @ 11:34 am by Mrs. Blush

Most of us have seen Sex and the City: The Movie. Remember the part where Jennifer Hudson’s character describes where she got her Louis Vuitton Denim pathwork purse?

Enter: bagborroworsteal.com

BBAS’s jewelry selection is amazing. The jewelry I was planning to wear is mostly family jewelry, but most of it is not as “blingy” as these. If you want to make a bold statement with your jewelry, BBAS is always an option. I’m not quite sure what to make of the whole “borrowing” concept. I plan to sell a lot of my stuff post-wedding anyway, so borrowing does sound enticing. But jewelry can also be seen as an heirloom that you can pass down to your children.

Has anyone used this site? What did you like or not like about it?

I was going to use it for my wedding - the issue is timing. I found a few pieces I loved, they all had waitlists, so I put myself on them - then all of a sudden, I get a notification, I cleared and the item was shipping - six weeks before my wedding!! Hold on, I am not paying six weeks rent for one day. So the reason I ultimately bailed on it was timing - I didn’t want to wait until the last minute to see if something I liked was available :( In fact, the first pair of Vera Wang earrings up there were high on my list!

A friend uses that for her purses and jewelry and loves it!

I’ve used it and was disappointed. Here’s why I did not have a good experience:

As mentioned above, timing is difficult. With the waiting list, you never quite know when something is coming, and then end up paying more to get it early, just in case.

Also, the “borrow” time is (or, at least was for me) charged from the date of shipment, not of receipt. This may not seem like a big deal, but it took over a week to receive the items. When you’re paying over $100 for a week’s rent, that adds up - one week shipping here (to CA), one week shipping back, one week to wear it, and boom - you’ve just rung up $300 in charges.

I was also overcharged for membership. This was an error in their system. When I notified them of the error in writing, I had no response for two weeks. I wrote them again. Still no response for an additional week. I wrote them a third time, this time not so nicely (I wasn’t unprofessional, but wasn’t nice about it), and they apologized and refunded me a month later. Resolved, but still took too long to address my written complaint, and it shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

And, finally, the bracelet that I had borrowed for my wedding was missing stones. They were admittedly the smaller ones, but in the close-up hand-holding photos (okay, it’s sappy, I know) that I had wanted, the bracelet just wouldn’t cut it. After I brought the damage to their attention and explained that it was unwearable for the event that I had borrowed it for, they refunded me the extra “borrowing” time due to shipping there any back. They did not refund for the borrowing in full for the item, even though it was not in the condition that I had expected it to arrive in, or for the membership that I paid to borrow this one item for this one occassion. Once again, this refund took two complaints in writing. And, once again, it took three written complaints, sent one week apart each, to even get a response.

In summary? WAY too much hassle for a damaged item. I ended up spending a few hundred for membership plus borrowing fees on a bracelet that I couldn’t wear. I was overcharged on membership, the borrow time was longer than expected due to shipping, the item was damaged, and customer service was very slow to respond.

They may be much better now - at the time, the Sex and the City movie had recently come out, so they may have just had too much business at once. So, take the above experience with that in mind.

I love the idea of BBS - does anyone know if they have been better lately, or if another company offers a similar service?

I’ve got o “third” the timing issues - you’ve got to be a lucky girl o end up scoring one of the items for your big day, as everything I’ve ever attempted to borrow has been waitlisted - especially sad when my perfect wedding earrings are just out of touch…

I agree with Abby. I have a terrible horrible experience with avelle / bagborroworsteal.com / Bag Borrow or Steal company. I got a very dirty bags and I bought it out from their “outlet” stores. They said that I cannot return them anymore even though they have a “14 day return policy” on their website but I guess I am stupid enough not to realize they are FRAUD. There are a lot of complaints online. I should have read before using that website. Read complaints board or just google these words “avelle complaints” or “bagborroworsteal complaints”. Seriously they are a NASTY FRAUD website… Be careful people!!!
