About Mrs. Glitter

My Ring

December 10th, 2008 @ 9:28 am by Mrs. Glitter

When we first got serious about the prospect of marriage, Mr. Glitter and I started doing what many couples in love do - browsing around jewelry stores looking at engagement rings. So we went to Rodeo Drive where the overpriced bling shops are housed. It’s fabulous. You don’t even have to drive anywhere - they’re all within blocks of each other! We both got some strange high off of it. It was like shopping for this ring was getting us one step closer to the nirvana of marriage. I tried on all kinds of rings. Big ones, little ones, flashy ones, simple ones. My heart was set on a simple classic solitaire. Something similar to the Tiffany Novo (pictured below).

At that point in the game, I could’ve told my future fiance that that was the ring I wanted. End of story. But no. I had to be difficult.

I had to let the flighty romantic part of my personality get the best of me. So, I told him that the Tiffany Novo was nice, but that I really wanted him to choose my ring. Was this a big mistake?

I was entrusting my brave fiance to select the ring on his own (with a little help from my wonderful mom). I made this decision based on a few reasons… (1) I wanted Mr. Glitter to know that I trusted his taste, (2) I wanted the romantic surprise of having never seen the ring, and (3) I felt it would somehow mean more if I let Mr. Glitter pick it out himself.

All of these reasons became a reality when Mr. Glitter presented me with this beautiful ring on my 26th birthday on May 6, 2007. Did it resemble the Tiffany Novo ring I originally wanted? No. Was it what I thought it would be? Nope. Was it an unexpected joy that I have embraced as “my ring”? Yes.

It has taken some time. At first, I was not sure the ring was really me. I had second thoughts about this process that I had set into motion. But it’s now a year and a half later and when I look down at my hand, everything about it just feels right.

The entire engagement story and history behind the making of my ring will follow in future posts. But without further delay, I present my engagement ring.

Did your ring take some time to get used to or did you instantly fall in love with it?

Mine was a complete surprise…but he did a fantastic job! I thought I wanted a marquise with baguettes, and he picked out something identical to the Tiffany Novo…

The Best part about it is that he got it through my grandfather, who is a retired jeweler, and my grandfather picked out the diamond (to FI’s specifications) and set it in the band.

I love that there is a sentimental aspect to the ring, and it really is fantastic! I look down at it 5 times a days still and am amazed that he did such a good job and picked out something both of us could like!

I didn’t want to go ring shopping or even talk about it. Luckily my husband felt the same way, so it was all a total surprise. We had been dating a bit over three years, and when friends heard I hadnt even told him what I liked, they asked if I was worried about it. I know it is silly, but I really felt like if he knew me, he’d figure it out. I knew very little about rings, but always loved the simple, classic, round diamond in a plain platinum band. ANd you know what, that is exactly what he got me! And it fit perfect despite the fact that he GUESSED my size just by looking at the samples. I loved that it was all a huge surprise. And yeah, I instantly loved the ring…

BTW this is not to say anything about those that go ring shopping - a lot of girls want to have input or know that their guy needs some guidance.

My ring was my grandmother’s. She and I were very close, and when she passed (I was in high school), she told my grandfather that she wanted me to have her rings (her wedding band and engagement ring had been joined). When my now-fiance and I started discussing the possibility of marriage, the rings were offered to me. Never having seen them, I didn’t know if they would be “me”. However, I felt like it was beautiful way to have my grandmother continue to play a major role in my life. Much to my surprise (really? I should’ve known she had impeccable taste…), the rings are precisely what I would’ve chosen for myself. They are absolutely gorgeous, and it means so much more that I get to carry that piece of her with me while expressing the love and commitment I have to my soon-to-be husband.

We shopped around and I had several styles I liked. He took all my inspiration and worked with a designer who custom made my ring and built it around the center stone. I absolutely love it!

We went shopping and it was a very weird experience for me. I didn’t like feeling like I was asking for something — and we had definite wedding plans before there was a ring involved.

We went to the mall, even though we were pretty sure he wouldn’t be getting anything from the mall, just so I could try things on, figure out my size, etc. One store was wonderful, another was very pushy. But I did get a sense of what I liked and had a chance to point out things I like. In the end, he chose something absolutely perfect based on features I had said I liked.

I agree about the ring! I told him that I like princess cut, but other than that, I wanted him to choose. I got my ring and the band is tapered in towards the center stone a bit- its not what I would have pictured, or picked out for myself, but I love it because he picked it out for me. He even had a reason for choosing the tapered band and I love his reasoning. Everyday the ring grows on me a bit more.

It was not what I expected, just way better! He proposed with the same diamond his father proposed to his mother with. I really admire their marriage and hope the ring brings us as much luck as theirs. Hih mom now wears one of their anniversary rings instead. I love that it has meaning, but my fiance wanted to make it more perssonal and pick out the band. It is a little antiquey looking and I love it.

Your ring is gorgoues!

I really wanted Mr. HC to pick out our ring, as well, but he insisted that I do, since I was the one that had to wear it everyday. I picked out the style online (we used Brilliant Earth), but it was still a lovely surprise to see it in person. Your ring is beautiful. You should use Anne Ruthman’s tips from WeddingbeePro and take a close up!!

I narrowed the style down to three and Mr. Blush picked from there. Although I was pretty obvious on which one I liked the most :)

Your ring is gorge!! & and how lovely is that picture?!

Your ring is lovely. I too am a sucker for the more romantic things in life.

I fell in love with the most perfect ring the moment I saw it through blurry tears. We’ve never looked at rings together (and I’ve never looked at them on my own) but, after 14 years together he had me pegged even if I didn’t know what I wanted. He couldn’t have picked out a more perfect ring - a square-radiant diamond set in Tacori band 2584RD65. It took him 6 months to create the perfect ring (from the initial research to picking out the diamond to settling on the band to waiting for Tacori’s masters to put the ring together).

Our ring story is very similar, only I had a couple of rings that I loved. I only liked my ring at first. Then I started longing for one of the the rings I had picked out. Then when I went in a few months later and saw the ring I had originally picked out, I was happy whith his choice. Now I am inlove with my ring! It is very similar to the Tiffany’s ring, only he “customized” my ring and had the princess stone turned so it looks like a kite. He was so proud of himself! Now I love my ring and it makes me feel warm inside when I catch him looking at it with a look of pride on his face.

I showed my fiance the Tiffany Novo as the “ideal” ring for me, and he went to another jeweler and got one made to look just like it! I love love love it and couldn’t ask for anything more!

My ring was exactly what I wanted. We went browsing a couple of times, enough that he felt like he had a good idea of what I had in mind. Turns out he was right :D I have long, thin fingers, and I don’t like a lot of bling or rings that stick up very far, so he got me a small but beautiful three stone diamond with three channel set diamonds on each side.

I know EXACTLY how you felt! I have always said I would die if I got a marquise cut. All my fiance knew was that I didn’t want a princess cut. One afternoon he put me on a plane for a conference and off he went shopping. I am proud that he picked it out all on his own. He even gave me the chance to exchange it but I just couldn’t. I knew it would hurt his feelings too much. I have grown fond of it but sometimes long for the emerald cut of my dreams!

My guy had only very general guidelines — not too big (seriously, I’m not one for lots of bling), set low, and a wide plain band. He did a fantastic job and I adore my ring. He wasn’t sure I’d like the band, so we even looked when we went back to the store (it had to be slightly downsized), but everything else they had was far too ornate.
