Mrs. Martini's Picture
Mrs. Martini, New Jersey Age and Occupation: 30, Telecom by day, Superhero by night Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Investments & Finance by day, Hip hop dancer by night Engagement Date: May 24, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: August 18, 2008 Venue: The Venetian About Me: Things that make me happy: Haribo Happy Cola gummies, TV shows on DVD, buying books although I never read them, 80’s rock ballads, ramen, and of course Mr. Martini! He is the calm, logical and number crunching finance guy. I can’t even multiply double digit numbers in my head and I am so indecisive that trying to choose between light green or slightly lighter green paper stresses me out (Wedding planning is going to be soooo much fun). We both find great joy in nabbing great seats at the movie theater for a blockbuster movie on opening weekend, and we are both absolutely crazy about snowboarding. And he loves to cook, I love to eat!
About Mrs. Martini

I just got back from a 5 day trip to Puerto Rico and I have to say that I’m soooo sad to be back. To be honest, although I was excited about the trip, I felt stressed because I didn’t think I should be going on a trip like this when there was so much to be done in terms of wedding planning. But there was no turning back because Mr. Martini and I booked this trip with 15 friends many months ago - way back before we were even engaged. At the time, he was working on finding the ring, while clueless me was just excited to be going away to PR with such a large group of friends. After we got engaged, I started having second thoughts about the spending money we would be forced to spend on the trip, when we could be spending it on much needed vendors and invitations.

Now that I’m back, I can’t help thinking that this trip was probably one of the best things I’ve done all year. I needed the break, and it was the longest vacation I ever took, the first vacation outside the States with friends, and the most fun I’ve ever had in probably my entire life.

When I went to Jamaica last year, it was the first time I’d ever been to a beach that didn’t belong to the coast of NJ. And if you know NJ, you know that our beaches are ghetto. The fried oreos and funnel cake try its best to make up for it, but it’s hard to get too excited about the Jersey Shore. I fell in love with Jamaica and at one point considered a romantic and casual destination wedding. If I could have my way, I would love to renew my vows one day to Mr. Martini on a gorgeous Caribbean beach at sunset.

In Puerto Rico, we stayed at the Rio Mar Beach Wyndham Resort, which is about 45 minutes from San Juan. The resort boasts a golf course, a beach just a few steps from your hotel room, a casino, and an awesome pool. We spent a LOT of time in this pool.

These are a couple of pictures that I took of the resort. Could it be that they were setting up tables for a wedding???

Among some of the activities, the whole group went ATV riding in the rain forest.

During the two hour ATV tour, we stopped at a river to rest and swim. It was a great opportunity to wash off all the mud from speeding into the puddles on the way up.

The absolute highlight of our trip? Culebra Island. If you ever decide to visit PR, whether it be for a bachelorette party or a honeymoon, I highly, highly recommend at LEAST day trip to Culebra Island. Culebra Island is absolutely breathtaking and is totally worth the trip. I wish I had a few days there instead of just the one day we had to visit it. It was a little hard to get to because of the hour and a half ferry ride that forced me to take dramamine for the very first time, but it was sooooooo worth it. Culebra is known as one of the most beautiful beaches, and I have to admit that after spending a day there, the beaches of our resort just didn’t cut it anymore. The crystal clear waters of Culebra really spoiled me.

Unfortunately, this picture does not do the island justice….

And be sure to bring an underwater camera case so that you can take pictures like these:

Back at the resort the next day, already missing Culebra. But it was the first time in my life I’d ever seen a full rainbow.

Trying to take a picture before the waves pummeled us.

z176328011
I was shocked to see stray cats sitting under my rented beach chair!

z176328012

Speaking of stray animals, the funniest thing was that there were dogs everywhere. They were so chill, just laying around in the middle of the street, under cars, and walking around on the sidewalks without a care in the world.

Sigh. I’m back to reality now, and refreshed and ready to tackle the last three months of wedding planning. Have you ever taken a vacation from wedding planning?

I’m so glad you had a great time and it was such a good stress reliever!

As a side note, PR has thousands of stray dogs (called “satos”) and cats. They also don’t have a lot of pet protections (although that’s fortunately starting to change) and many of these dogs are mistreated. There are orgs here that are working within PR to bring satos to the mainland US for adoption and anyone who travels to PR can sign up to be an escort for the organization (there’s no commitment to adopt a dog, they just have to have someone claim them as “baggage” before they can be flown back to the US). So, it’s no cost, no commitment and very easy to do. If you’re interested or want more info, go to http://www.SaveaSato.org. You can also adopt these dogs at many no-kill shelters in the US (mainly east coast).

Sorry for the book, but I’m a HUGE animal activist. :)

Sounds liek a great trip, My friends and I always talk about doing a big trip, but it never happens. My fiance and I are going to the Florida Keys in February, I can’t wait! We had trouble at first too with taking a vacation during wedding planning, but I think it will be fun and relaxing, which is needed!

I know the Jersey shore doesn’t compare to islands, but I am still in love with it. My favorites are the beaches on Long Beach Island, they have such nice sand and they even have dolphins, which totally surprised me, who would have thought you’d see dolphins in Jersey?

as a fellow jersey girl i cant help but be saddened by your disrespect of the shore. maybe it was for comic effect, but there are SO many parts of the jersey shore that aren’t ghetto. lbi? totally not ghetto. southern shore between lbi and cape may? not ghetto. don’t get me wrong, i love exotic beaches (i’ve been to quite a few in my life), but i look forward to my family’s trip down the shore every year. granted, we don’t go to “sleaside” or point pleasant with the boardwalks - we tend to stay away from where MTV has been. jersey gets such a bad rep from everyone; stand up proudly for your state!

@jennyt: awww, i didnt mean it in a bad way! i loveee the jersey shore! but i live about half an hour from point pleasant, so the boardwalks and seaside beaches are what i was referring to.

and yet, i still love point pleasant. also i think beaches get boring and I need the eye candy of the shops and food that the jersey beaches have to offer. in fact, fried oreos are one of my favorite sweets. I once had a house party where we swore we’d make fried oreos. I ended up passing out too early, and my friend pretty much disintegrated the oreos by leaving them in the fryer for too long.

We flew into San Juan to meet our cruise boat when we left for our honeymoon. I really like SJ, but we didn’t get to do a whole lot because we were only there overnight. We stayed close to downtown so we walked a lot! We walked probably 4 miles round trip to Old San Juan but didn’t get to see much, because we were so tired by the time we got there. I would like to go back for a vacation. Culebra looks amazing!

OMG you have no idea of how excited I got when I wrote this post. I’m from PR, I got married there 2 months ago (Oct 4). Even though we went a week before the wedding, we didn’t get a chance to go to Culebras so my husband was really sad :(. Flamenco beach (Culebras’ most famous beach) is my husband’s favorite beach in PR. My husband is from upstate NY, the first time he saw Culebras he did not want to leave ;-). The west coast of the island has awesome beaches too.I hope you had a chance to try our mofongo (plantain dish). I’m glad to know that you did the most out of your trip. You deserved this vacation.

This Jersey girl totally gets your shore comments! Been there many times and love it. Add to that the sentimental value of childhood trips etc…. but there is no comparison with the Caribbean, people come on! BUT only Jersey people can say so! =0)

>sigh< I too am from Puerto Rico. I have family in Isla Verde, Carolina, Ponce, and Bayamon. So much fun you went!
yeah there are a lot of stray animals there, it is pretty depressing on that end of things…
It is too bad you didn’t make it to Palomar Islands! Or get to go to El Conquistador and play around on that side of the island.
But there is so much you can do there. Were you at El Yunque ATV’ing? I didn’t know they do ATV’s there! And di you have time to go to El Morro or San Cristobal the fortresses in Old San Juan???

How funny - my fiance and I are headed to PR on the 2nd of Jan for a little getaway and I kind of feel the same way… not sure we should be spending the $$ when we have a wedding coming up next summer, etc. BUT… like you, I could use a break!

We’re spending part of our trip at the same hotel, and the other half at a different resort (can’t remember which one)

Anyway, I’m getting excited now that I see your photos!
