Ceremony Readings

December 11th, 2008 @ 11:02 am by Mrs. Pinot Noir

Originally Mr. PN and I didn’t plan to have a reading during our ceremony. But, after we met with Kimberly she told us our entire ceremony was under 15 minutes (including processional and recessional). She recommended that we add a reading to bulk it up a little.

We asked my godparents if they would do the reading, and they were honored to participate. We then set off on the lengthy and emotional task of choosing a wedding reading.

While I was leaning towards more serious and romantic pieces, Mr. PN really wanted to do something that was fun and whimsical. Mr. Pinot Noir’s top choice was “Us Two” by A. A. Milne from Now We Are Six.

Us Two
~ A. A. Milne ~

Wherever I am, there’s always Pooh,
There’s always Pooh and Me.
Whatever I do, he wants to do,
“Where are you going today?” says Pooh:
“Well that’s very odd ’cos I was too.
Let’s go together,” says Pooh, says he.
“Let’s go together,” says Pooh.

’What’s twice eleven?’ I said to Pooh,
(’Twice what?’ said Pooh to Me)
’I think it ought to be twenty-two.’
’Just what I think my self,’ said Pooh.
’It wasn’t an easy sum to do,
But that’s what it is,’ said Pooh, said he.
’That’s what it is,’ said Pooh.

’Let’s look for dragons,’ I said to Pooh.
’Yes, let’s,’ said Pooh to Me
We crossed the river and found a few–
’Yes, these are dragons all right,’ said Pooh.
’As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.
That’s what they are,’ said Pooh, said he.
’That’s what they are,’ said Pooh.

“Let’s frighten the dragons,” I said to Pooh.
“That’s right,” said Pooh to Me.
“I’m not afraid,” I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and I shouted “shoo!
Silly old dragon!” - and off they flew.
“I wasn’t afraid,” said Pooh, said he,
“I’m never afraid,” with you.”

So wherever I am, there’s always Pooh,
There’s always Pooh and Me.
’What would I do?’ I said to Pooh,
’If it wasn’t for you,’ and Pooh said: ’True,
it isn’t much fun for One, but Two
Can stick together,’; says Pooh, says he.
’That’s how it is,’ says Pooh.

I liked this poem but I was hoping for something a little more serious. After much searching and debate, it was the only reading we could agree on so we settled on Us Two. But, when I emailed the poem to my godparents, they expressed some concern. They were a little nervous about reading in front of a large group and the poem was quite the tongue twister. So, out of respect for their wishes we set out to search for a new reading. After much more debate and searching, we decided on the following reading by Regina Hill.

Unknown Title
~ Regina Hill ~
When two people join together
and bond their lives forever
because they are certain they have something special
that will make their commitment last…
this is the first act of faith.

Upon this act of faith these two people will build a life.
and as long as their determination stays with them
this life will always be their hope, their dreams, their truth, their being, their inspiration,
and their source of strength.

Through their life together, they will hurt and laugh.
Together they will feel all of life’s up and downs.
They will learn and grow through trial and error.

The lessons will show them the meaning of true love
And the difference between a love that lasts
and one that just gives up.
These two people will face each failure together and
discover the strength to go on.

They will encourage each other’s dreams and forgive each other’s faults.
Through a labour of love.
these two will become as one,
fighting against the odds and ultimately creating
a commitment that will grow into an infinite love.

I really liked the Regina Hill reading but Mr. PN still wasn’t wild about it. We needed to move on so as part of the compromise, Mr. PN choose the musical interlude and we also picked a fun song for our recessional, the Peanuts Theme Song.

We also included a copy of the reading on the back of the program so that our guests could follow along. (I’m such a visual person I can never follow readings just by listening.)

Will you have a reading in your ceremony? How did you choose it?

We found a GREAT poem in a roundabout way. I discovered there’s a word for poems for/about weddings (epithalamion), and googled that. The result:

I chose the Apache marriage blessing for heritage reasons, and to tie into our sand ceremony which is thought to have ties to native american customs.
i also chose a sonnet by shakespeare that i used to scribble all over my notebooks when i was in high school.
But i can say for sure that i cried so many times going through readings. Hopefully, by the time the wedding rolls around, i’ll be thoughened up a bit and wont ruin my makeup ;)
