Saving It Until Marriage

Saving the holiday decorating, that is. After Miss Powder Puff’s post about giving Christmas decorations as wedding gifts (fabulous idea, PP!), and my post mentioning “pre-nesting” as a downside of living together, I decided that we’ll save at least a few traditions for our year as newlyweds. The mister agreed! (I’m guessing that part of his ready agreement has to do with suddenly realizing how much time and effort goes into getting a tree, not to mention the decisions — fake or real, cut or live, themes or not, star or angel, breakable ornaments or not, etc, etc!)

I love getting ready for Christmas. I like to make hot chocolate, put something yummy in the oven for dinner, play holiday tunes (my favorite play lists all come from Starbucks!), and wrestle with the tree. It’ll be fun to talk with each other about holiday memories and crazy family and traditions we’d like to have with our new family, so we’re going to wait until after we’re married. Oh, and then we can have a tree trimming party!!

What newlywed traditions (or activities) are you looking forward to or saving for after the big day?

We, too, are skipping the Christmas tree this year so next year is extra cozy - plus, we just ain’t got the time! But I think its a great and simple way to save tradition for marriage.

We’re skipping the tree…but it’s mostly because we have a very mischievous puppy who won’t leave the ornaments alone! :) Hopefully next Christmas he’ll be grown up enough, just in time for us to have a tree as newlyweds.

Agreed! Being that we don’t live together, it becomes super extra difficult anyway. It’ll be curious to see how our first xmas does turn out, seeing as the FH admittedly doesn’t love xmas.

@almostananderson: Yea, I didn’t mention the puppy factor for us! He’s about 6 months old and RAMBUNCTIOUS, so this works out well anyway.

Living 2,100 miles apart until the wedding day makes all new traditions saved for after marriage!

We live apart now, so we’re looking forward to getting our own tree next year. Although this morning I thought about it and realized that we’re getting married on November 14th, so the odds of us going out and buying a tree in the hulabaloo after our honeymoon (we’ll get back near Thanksgiving) aren’t very likely. So we’ll probably use my adorable 4″ tall pink tree again next year and buy a real tree the following year-hopefully in our new house! :)

Since we’re living together this year, it wouldn’t be abnormal for us to send out Christmas cards as a couple. But, we’re saving that tradition for next year, when we’re married.

We totally decorated this year, because I’m a Christmas nut!

oooh, I’m glad that you posted this! I have been begging for a tree, and just when I got Mr. Taffy to agree to get one, I started thinking that we should wait until next year. We are so busy, and it is already kind of late in the season…
At the same time, I have an enormous box of ornaments that I am just dying to bust out!

we’re not saving anything:) we’ve been decorating our tree for the last few years and we LOVE doing that together! This year we actually had our first (and probably our only) Thanksgiving dinner alone. It was so intimate and something I’ll always remember!

We’re saving our Christmas Tree for next year too! I’m hoping *fingers crossed* that my mom will finally find a new Christmas Tree she likes (she’s been looking for years) and give us the one she’s had since my parents got married 28 years ago!! I LOVE her tree, but her collection of ornaments has outgrown it, but it would be perfect for us to start out with!!

I have been looking at all of the “Our First Christmas” ornaments and wishing we were already married though! I’m so ready to be his wife…

Since we’ve been living together for 4 years already, there’s nothing to save. We’ve started doing things that are “our own” traditions and will continue on after we’re married. It was fun getting our first tree together and it was just as fun this year too! I love decorating for Christmas, we have snowmen everywhere!!

I do have to agree that I LOVE Starbucks music compilations! I plan on stopping to pick up another one this week!

We’ve had a tree together actually a year since we moved in together. He helped me pick it all out as well as the ornaments.

And though we put it up this year it just seems a little half heartedly as we’ll be far away at his parents for the year again. This whole in-law thing is a pain.

We started new traditions early. We just decided to start an annual Christmas party and it was a blast!

May I suggest a $$ saving tip for all you ladies waiting for the tree until you get married…Buy the tree after xmas the year before you plan on decorating (if you are going the fake route). If you wait until New Year’s Day, it will save you 75%. I did this with all my xmas stuff, and managed to get a tree and amazing decorations for 1/4 of the price.
