About Mrs. Meatball

Ed. note: As the title suggests, this post is about maintaining a woman’s “hairstyling for the bathing suit area”.  If you’d rather not read the post, please skip past the “read more” link!

~~~
*Note: Dad, you may wanna skip this one. Warning: Potentially Definitely embarrassing female and personal information about to be revealed! Seriously, skip it*
I got a request to write about, err, hairstyling for the bathing suit area. You know, trimming the hedges, grooming the hair-apparent, playing truth or Nair? It’s a delicate topic, but a relevant one. I mean, who wants to be concerned about their overgrowth on their honeymoon, or in their boudoir pictures? Pas Moi! Yes, pruning our pubicles is not only for the ladies anymore. There also seems to be a men’s grooming movement… to which I say, it’s about time!
(source)
From trimming, to shaping, to full removal or au natural, there are just so many options available. I personally favor a semi-regular trim with some strong edging skills, alternated with a full mow every few months to get a clean slate and fresh start. But, um, that’s just me.
There are a wide range of methods available to help tame our under-mane, the most popular (and painful) being waxing. Since waxing takes the hair out from the root, it definitely leaves you smoother for longer, but it’s not for the faint of heart or sensitive of skin. I’ve only been waxed once, but broke out into quite a rash of little bumpy zits/ingrown hairs and figured I’d rather be a bushwoman than have a case of lady acne. Not sexy. However, I have friends who swear by it. Perhaps they’re thicker-skinned, or have smaller follicles, but for my delicate alabaster skin I prefer other methods. At $20-$50 per treatment, it’s also not the most budget friendly option available. My best advice is to get a trial run several months before the wedding, so you can gauge your skin’s reaction and have time to recover if you, too, have bikini-breakout-itis.
(source)
My trimmer of choice is the personal trimmer, at a reasonable $8-11 depending on the brand. This little baby is inconspicuous, quiet, and effective. It works fast and takes the hair down to the skin, with quite a smooth result. It works best if you manually trim first (with scissors - be careful!) and then use this to smooth out the edges. The safety guard is what I love best - no accidental skin grabbing here! And believe me, I’ve had many an electric razor give me a nasty gash. I love this one for travel, since it’s about the size of a highlighter, so you can take it anywhere. I’ve used it for everything from some simple edging, to a full-blown mow. With practice, you can even trim to custom lengths with this - so whether you’re into a crew cut or the Yul Brynner, this baby can deliver.
I recently saw this online and I’m dying to try it out. First, who can deny a company called “Hair Care Down There“?!? I mean, c’mon! They had me at hello. HCDT has developed a line of gentle skin care solutions to help avoid irritation and create lasting smoothness. The 1-2-3 method focuses on shaping, soothing and smoothing - to avoid ingrown hairs and promote softness. You can buy many of their skincare products a la carte (prices range from $15-up), but their Ultimate Shaving Kit has quickly jumped to the top of my wish list.
For $89 you get a sassy tote, jam packed with discreetly labeled products, including: a detailed shaving guide, razor, brush, comb, mirror, scissors, clear shave gel, soothing moisturizer, anti-irritant spray, stencils, pencil and *gasp!* decorative bikini bindis! It sounds like (dare I say it?) fun! This would also make a great gift, in a not-creepy best friend kind of way, right? I think my favorite thing is the testimonials on their site, on which many happy hubbies suggest using this as a kind of foreplay. Interesting…
I personally stay away from hair removal creams, because I’ve heard horror stories of burns. Anyone out there a Nair advocate?
Now that we’ve covered removal techniques, let’s take a moment to remember that even your lady-locks can be stylish. I’ve included this informative video, which uses a simple outline and pieces of construction paper to illustrate the many ways to style yourself. What’s your favorite style?
I hope this has helped to demystify some of the tools and techniques available to help coif your cuttles (too far?), but I want to know what I’m missing. Anyone got a fave product, style, or technique they’d like to share?
*Update: I just got word that Duane Reade carries special dye for your muffin top! I’d love to try that business out!*
I’ll be your Nair advocate!!! I used it a very long time ago and had a bad experience, but in the past few years I have picked it right back up. They have significantly improved the smell, and I have never been burned (and I have sensitive skin!) Waxing scares me (I’m a big wimp) and shaving always gives me bumps. My regimen is Nair + Bikini Zone (to prevent bikini-itis.) For me, it’s the easiest!!
I use to wax all the time… but at home waxing for me usually included some vodka to “tame” the pain… it all worked fine until this one time, i went a little overboard with the alcohol and well, er, when i sobered up, let’s just say i had never seen anything quite like that! haha, never tried it since. But i am curious about the cute little con air! gonna have to try that one out!
btw, your metaphors are awesome! :D
I’m a waxig addict. Yes it hurts but the more you do it the less it hurts and the less grows back. It’s gotten to a point where I can carry on a pleasant conversation with my waxing lady and barely notice what she’s doing.
Also, I LOVE Tendskin. It’s a solution used to prevent ingrowns, rashes and razor bumps. It totally cleared my skin right up.
Love this post Miss Meatball. Good job! I second nair- it’s totally improved over the years. And Tendskin is great stuff!! I think I might have to go buy that trimmer.
That video is quite entertaining!
I have waxed once and it wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. I would suggest taking a pain killer beforehand, though. And exfoliate A LOT afterward to prevent ingrown hairs.
Ditto your rec to start waxing a few months before the wedding (or other “special romantic night” ;) ) The first wax will pretty much always be rough, but they get much easier if you go regularly (ie, monthly). I used to wax, but the cost started to add up :( Note: be sure to go to someone highly recommended! There are lots of waxers who offer bikini area services, but don’t have specialized training. This isn’t an area to mess around with! Never, under any circumstances, should a wax ever remove skin or cause pain more than 30-60 min afterwards.
Now I use a cream. It doesn’t last as long as waxing or have the same thinning effect, but it does the job for a fraction of the price and I haven’t had any burns. Getting around “the backdoor” is pretty hard by yourself, though. I have to make sure the hair is pretty short first, otherwise it doesn’t remove anything. The brand with the razer-like tool works the best. (Blanking on the name).
Cuts the groom time immensely and you’re always ready for that impromtu pool party!
Whoa, that trimmer looks awesome!
I have super sensitive skin, and I like waxing the best. The trick is to find a good waxer. After going through a few, my bridesmaid sent me to hers, and she is seriously amazing. She gets the job done with only a few rips lol, and she uses a numbing spray! I do get red and bumpy, but only for a day. Shaving leaves bumps on me forever, I can’t stand it! It is expensive though. :(
I am loving how you handled this topic, Miss Meatball! Your sense of humour and your use of puns and metaphors was awesome! It was like you’ve been blogging about this for years (maybe I was just relieved to hear that someone else shares my unsexy but very sensible techniques!) Thanks for recommending that trimmer. I’ve gotta find that!
PS–Grooming as foreplay has worked for us in the past….it’s also a good trust exercise too (an extreme version of the catch-your-falling-partner exercise, I suppose!)
Try sugaring. It’s gentler and less painful than waxing… won’t burn you, and causes fewer bumps.
Me, I’m getting myself lasered for xmas. :)
ROFLOL just at the title. I read this post on my google reader (which doesn’t say who wrote it), and I could just tell from the hilariousness of it that it was you, MB!
Yeah, off topic, but what is up with the fact that Google Reader just a day or two ago stopped saying who wrote what post, but JUST for WeddingBee? All other blogs still list authors. So more like, what changed about WeddingBee (rather than what changed about Google Reader)?
This is brilliantly written. Love it.
I’m a waxer — go every few months to a professional but maintain at home with this awesome home waxing kit. It has the word brazilian in the name (I don’t go nearly that far on my own) and has legs crossed on the front. Can’t remember the brand name, but it is an excellent product. SURGI WAX. Just looked it up!
As the most conservative Bee of the bunch, I vote that video very tastefully done. Mr. Avo and I talked about it in the car tonight even, LOL.
Can I just tell you that the last time I got waxed the girl doing it thought it was a good idea to tell me about someone who got her “lips” waxed shut. That is not the think to tell a person when you are poking around down there.
I used to use Veet cream with the squigee– it worked super well. As long as you DO NOT shave a few days before you use it (that will hurt like a mother**), you shouldn’t develop a rash unless you’re very sensitive. Of course test it on less sensitive skin first.
You will of course be as bald as an eagle, so if that’s not your thing skip removal creams.
I’m seconding diorable’s suggestion. I’ve been a diehard fan of Veet for years. I’ve never had any luck with Nair–the smell is terrible and didn’t seem strong enough for the hair “down there.” But Veet seems to get the job done!
I was going to cover this in my wannabee blog, but why not spoil it here?…
if we’re thinking of the same thing, the Duane Reade dye line’s blue pube dye is *actually* called “Something Blue.” AMAZING!
