Cupcake Bar

December 13th, 2008 @ 12:03 pm by Mrs. Avocado

I believe wedding inspiration can be found almost anywhere, and this weekend it struck at my husbands company holiday party. Maybe in my newlywed bliss I missed this trend, but this looked like a novel idea to me. I call it “The Cupcake Bar.”

Everyone I know loves cupcakes, and everyone I know also loves “create your own” type of experiences, so why not put the two together? The guys in chef’s hats are probably an unnecessary, expensive addition, but at this party they were the “frosters.” I picked up my fruit toppings, chose my cupcake and frosting, and then chose some pecans and peanut butter candies to seal the deal.

I ended up with a monster black and white cupcake that I didn’t even come close to finishing. My tip if you decide to do this: make sure your cupcakes are good. The frosting was overly sweet and the cupcakes were overly dry at this party. Points for a great idea though!

Has this been happenings at weddings all over the country and I somehow missed it? I LOVE this concept and am now wishing I would have incorporated it at my own wedding!

This is an awesome idea! I think I might do this on a smaller scale for a friends shower. Yummy!!

I didn’t have a cupcake bar at my wedding, however my husband and I did have a cupcake wedding cake (with a 6″ topper to cut) for us and the guests. The cupcakes were a hit with the guests and I receive lots of raves for having such a thing at the wedding. (For those in Maryland, I have nothing but good things to say about Just Cakes in Bethesda. They’re the ones I contracted to provide the wedding cupcakes. They did the best in providing a tasting menu and a taste of the contracted product for the big day. The delivery and set up was also top notch.)

Tara you realize that cupcakes instead of a wedding cake is not something new, right? Such a thing at a wedding has been around for at least 9 years…. you kind of sound like you think this was new.

What a fabulous idea! And how cool that you can now say, “my husband’s company holiday party!” Yay for being a newlywed! :)

Darling idea for any event.
I can see guests having a blast and talking about the cupcake bar for a few years.

@Anon: Let’s give Tara the benefit fo the doubt! They could be a new thing to where Tara lives, and it’s also quite possible that she doesn’t spend hours and hours every day on sites like WB like I (we?) do learning about the newest wedding trends. I did a cake buffet at my wedding, which is not something I came up with by any means, but my guests had never seen it and can’t stop talking about it!

@Miss Glitter: I do seem to find reasons to refer to him as husband whenever I can :)

SHUT UP!!!! I loooove this!!! I’ve seen mashed potato bars, and pasta bars, and dessert bars… but this definitely takes the “cake”.

Mrs. Avocado, how many people were at your husband’s company party? I would love to do this at my wedding but we’re expecting around 300 people. If necessary we may just have to do more than one cupcake bar to accomodate all of the guests.

oooh i love this idea!! i might just have to use it! (i’m gonna ask the FH for his approval, and if he says yeah then i’m all for it!) i was planning on making cupcakes and frosting them the day before the wedding. and we were going to have a candy buffet. we have about 100 guests…. what if i just say no to the candy buffet and do this instead!? i do think it’s adorable!! and how easy if all i have to do is make the cake but not frost!!! lol. do you think it’d be lame if we do this but have a mini two-tare cake? i can’t really picture it, but i still really like the idea of us “cutting our cake”. i’m sorta a traditionalist geek like that! what do you think??

@mixingmommybride: Not at all! I’m loving the trend I’m seeing lately of having cupcakes for the guests and a little mini cake for the bride and groom!
