Hair Up, Hair Down… What to Do?

December 14th, 2008 @ 3:08 pm by Mrs. Glitter

For the longest time, I assumed that my wedding day hair would look something like this…

Traditional, simple, Audrey Hepburn. How can one go wrong? Yet, in recent weeks, I’m beginning to think I pigeonholed myself and forgot to do the proper research. I’ve started to consider other looks, specifically options that are more modern. I have even entertained the possibility of wearing my hair down (gasp!) But I’ll come back to that.

For now here’s what I don’t want…

I’m not a big fan of tendrils and curly Qs. I’m Asian and my hair is naturally very straight (big surprise) so I tend to think that my hair looks better wavy rather than in tight, stiff curls. Also, on a related note, I’m not a fan of the “two or three strands of hair sprayed tendrils” look. Think about it - it’s kinda like bad prom hair, except I’m not seventeen, I’m twenty-seven. Yikes! Here’s an example of a pretty updo… but hold the tendrils.

I also don’t want gems, glitter, beanie babies or anything similar stuck into my hair on the big day. Here’s an extreme case of this:

Yes, I’m Japanese American… but this is just pushing it:

So now that you know what I’m not looking for, here’s what I’m considering:

If I do wear my hair up, I’m considering something simple and sweet. Here’s a popular look…

And if I wear my hair down, this could be nice…

The next step in this process is finding a hair stylist. In the booming metropolis of L.A. there are about a zillion hair places. I considered this one place in Koreatown until Mr. Glitter’s cousin said that every bride that goes in there comes out looking exactly the same: like a Korean Stepford wife. If he said that and he’s a guy, and let’s face it guys don’t notice that stuff… it must be pretty bad. I guess it’s back to the drawing board.

I’m open to suggestions. What are you doing with your hair for the big day?

I love the second to last picture. It’s beautiful. I live near L.A. and know of a few hairstylists in the Beverly Hills area if you’re interested.

I’m having this same dilemma with my hair so I feel you on this one. Ugh.

i’m going half-up/half-down. i like the look of carrie underwood’s hair (if you google “carrie underwood hair,” you’ll see what i mean), but my asian hair doesn’t like to stay curled, either. it’s hard to get it curled… but look naturally curly and not totally piece-y.

That last picture is one my inspirations for my hair. I haven’t decided what I’m doing for sure, but it will be something similar to that.

Omigod you totally need to get Dana from Design Visage! Mrs. Daffodil got her hair done by her. I was a bridesmaid of her wedding, and at my wedding in August I used Dana too when I saw how great she looked at the wedding. Even my husband asked, “who did Mrs. Daffodil’s hair and make up? Use her!” I did not even have a hair trial because I live in Boston and got married in Long Beach, but I was so happy with the results. Dana does great make up too. $250 for hair and make up (without the trial) but SO TOTALLY worth it, even for this thrifty Chinese bride.

you need to check out nicole deanne! She is going to do my hair and makeup and is Amelia Lyon’s (our photog) sister! She can basically do ANY style that you want and comes to you on your wedding day. It really is amazing to see what she does with hair. two of my friends booked her for their weddings as well! She can also stick around on your wedding day to change an up-do to loose curls, like your last image. i can’t rave about her enough.

i posted pictures of my preview on my blog http://sohappyberries.blogspot.com/2008/09/hair-and-make-up-trial.html
and of course you can find more on her blog http://nicoledeanne.blogspot.com/

let her know that nancy referred you! :)

I’m in LA and did SOOOOO many hair and make-up trials before finding Betsy diFrancesca (http://www.betsymh.com/). Everyone else I tried made me look like what THEY envisioned a bride should look like (basically, tight-curled disasters!). Betsy is absolutely amazing and will really work with you on getting the look you want. She also does make-up and will come to you on the big day. If you haven’t found someone yet give her a call. Did I mention she’s amazing?!?!

I know it is really popular right now, but I still love the flower in the hair look. I think it is so pretty! I always wanted my hair down, but lately I’ve been thinking of a simple updo with a flower on the side.

Wow, thanks everyone for the recommendations!! You are all so lovely and helpful! An update on my hairstyle dilemma - I am still looking for a stylist. But more importantly, look forward to a post about my beautiful headpiece! I am super excited to reveal it in a future post.

you have to have the right face shape for the last do (and i certainly don’t), but if you do it can be beautiful. hairday didn’t do a great job with mrs. caramel’s hair, but they did my cousin’s hair in a similar style to the last one really well.

i think asian makeup artists are better with asian makeup, but not so great with hair. there are so many talents in la! :)

I always tell brides to enhance themselves on there wedding day. Don’t try anything “new”, and keep to what the celebrity magazines, bring tons of photos and also your veil.

For those that can, bring your entire essemble at least once to the salon and do the entire thing as a trial run, take photos and look at them in a few days not right away, is this what you want, in your photos? A clean swept updo w/ a simple pop of color is not to elaborate and still dreamy. Make yourself the point of the outfit not the accesories.

Just note if you have fine hair like I do, it shoes on the sides hence I will be getting some hair pieces (similar to the jessica simpson verison)
