Engaging Gifts

December 15th, 2008 @ 4:34 pm by Mrs. Taffy

Mr. Taffy and I just received our high resolution files from our engagement shoot! We love our engagement photos and we have been hoping to give framed prints as a gift to our parents for the holiday. The problem is, the shots that we ordered are not very traditional. When it came time to choose a print for the parents, we realized that we were smooching in almost all of the shots, or not looking directly into the camera. This was definitely the style we were after when we chose our photographer, and there were plenty of images to choose from within our shoot. Mr. Taffy and I just naturally gravitated to the non traditional shots when we picked our favorites.

We worried that this would not be parent material:

Our record store location photos are fun and quirky, and we love them! We decided to give these shots to our siblings.

For our parents, we chose this very traditional pose:

Mr. Taffy looks so cute in that sweater! :)

We will be giving them this shot as well, where we are framed by the orchard trees.

All photos by A Girl In Love Photography

Finding frames was really fun; we tried to choose a frame that would suit the personality of each family member. My family is really big on giving ornaments, so I will be choosing another shot for a mini picture frame ornament for Mom Taffy. :)

Did you use your engagement shots for holiday gifts? Did you have a hard time choosing shots for your parents if your e-shoot was more contemporary than traditional?

Love your pics. We had the same problem with our folks. I am giving them 1 of the 3 ‘traditional’ pictures that we have.

I think that’s a perfect choice for parents. They’ll want to show all their friends how pretty and handsome you two are, so they’ll love the face-on shots. Gorg!

I heart your engagement photos! I also really like the traditional ones you will give the parents. Perfect choices!

The same thing happened with us! We found a fantastic photographer and got a ton of great, fun and non-traditional shots. I sent a couple of previews to the parents via email and my dad complained that they didn’t look like engagement pictures. Turns out, all of our parents (my mom, my dad/stepmother, my fiance’s mom and stepfather) all wanted the more traditional shots! So we ended up buying them what they wanted (the two of us sitting on a bench looking straight into the camera, etc…)

Friends our age all loved the less traditional and fun ones that are going up on our wall (the ones that showed our playfulness, used light and shadows in cool ways)!

I got a LOT of complaints from the “older generation” because not one of our e-photos had both of us looking at the camera and smiling. And I sent out 14 different photos! I just don’t really like photos like that and I wasn’t taking the photos for other people, you know!
I ended up finding one good picture with both of us looking at the camera and smiling for our Christmas card. Phew! I don’t know what I would have done otherwise. I don’t think my Grandma would have been pleased getting 2 “artsy” photos in a row from us!

I love your engagement shots — and I think you picked exactly the right ones for your parents. Ours high-res shots aren’t ready yet, but once they are, we’ll be doing the same.

@Kristay: We are in the same boat! We were staring to panic that we didn’t have a good option until we saw the crate picture. :)

@Mrs. Avocado: I was worried that it would be the same for us! We’ll see what they say about the tree framed shot. We aren’t looking at the camera and are teeny tiny!

@Miss Peep Toe: It was harder than I thought to find a traditional photo out of the bunch!

@Miss Snapdragon: Me too, it is my absolute favorite. :)

One thing I was very concerned about was finding a photographer that offered a nice balace of photojournalism and posed shots. Your pictures are great!

your rents are going to love these! we did blurb books (hardcover + imagewrap= pretty!) and some framed wedding photos. if you start a registry with macy’s, they give you a certain percentage of the gifts people got you on a reward gift card…if that makes sense. anyway, we got a free $50 macy’s gift card in the mail after the wedding, so we went out last weekend and got martha stewart picture frames for the folks :) yay free stuff!

Aww, I bet your parents would like the [totally adorable] record store photos, too - because you both look so darn happy in them! One of my family’s favorite photos of my grandparents is actually one where they are laughing at each other, and not looking at the camera at all. I think that glowy, photogenic kind of love translates, even to more traditional older generations :D

@Mrs. Candy Corn: We wanted to make a blurb book but didn’t have enough time. I’m glad to hear that you liked their quality! And thanks for the Macy’s tip, very good to know as we aren’t registered yet.

@KS: You are right… I’m going to give them a smaller framed print of the record store picture! :) Thanks for the comment!

@tsquared: We didn’t think about it too much beforehand, but are so happy that we did have both aspects. :)
