Peonies in February?

December 16th, 2008 @ 12:14 pm by Mrs. Champagne

Our initial flower budget was pretty weak. I thought we would do candle centerpieces and maybe a few very small arrangements on the cocktail tables. That’s before I discovered that you can find peonies in February! It’s true… I totally didn’t believe it until our florist came back with a quote and some arrangement ideas. I had no idea what to expect from a floral proposal, so this might help those of you who are clueless as to what to ask for!

Here are the bouquet pictures I showed her for inspiration.

And here’s the floral proposal for the bouquets:

Bride: Medium round bouquet consisting of white peonies and tea roses, finished in layers of champagne satin loops with a full wrap, pearl pin detailing, and lace accents.

Bridesmaids: Smaller round bouquet filled with red peonies and spray roses, finished in an ivory satin ribbon.

Groom: Boutonnière of white tea roses framed in foliage and finished in a black satin ribbon.

Groomsmen: Boutonnière of red tea roses framed in foliage and finished in a black satin ribbon.

Mothers: Posy bouquet of white calla lilies and tea roses framed in foliage and finished in an ivory satin ribbon.

Fathers: Single white calla lily framed in foliage and finished in a black satin ribbon.

And for the centerpieces:

Two designs to be incorporated into the setting.
Low Design: Seven multi-height glass cylinders to host a single ivory floating candle. Tabletops to be sprinkled with red rose petals, as well as some cylinders to contain layers of petals for dimension.

High Design: Tall glass fluted vase to host a textured display of white and ivory florals including hydrangeas, peonies, lilies, tulips and bouvardia amidst a base of seasonal foliage.

I’m so happy we’ll be able to add peonies to our arrangements. It sounds so silly, but it’s always what I pictured for my bouquet.

Were you pleasantly surprised by any of your vendors being able to come through on what you thought would be an impossibility?

Yes, peonies! My florist got them from New Zealand for my wedding last month. I was over the moon.

I am so excited that your florist is able to get you peonies in February. Can I ask where they are getting them from? Sorry to be so nosy - but my florist in Florida was not so positive for my 3/28 wedding. She mentioned she can get them from CA put they are like $20 a stem and she basically has to pray over them to make sure they are open by the big day.

I heart peonies:) I wanted them so bad and my florist pretty much told me it was too expensive so I believed her and moved on. I got married November 1st so just about 6 weeks ago. The day of though my mom surprised me and had contacted the florist and paid the difference. It definitely made my day and my bouquet!

If you don’t mind, what was the estimated cost for everything? I’m so afraid to find out how much flowers will cost and there is no straight answer out there because of the various prices and flowers. A ball park figure will do!

@rofvbb07: I’ll call to ask her where she’s getting them from- I’ll pm you when she gets back with me!

@Lauren: that is SO SWEET! My mom didn’t even know what peonies were- she’s a total tomboy:)

@Jojo: the estimated cost was about $3000, but that was with 8 large fluted vases for the centerpieces and 63 cylinder vases for the floating candles. I decided to rent from our florist instead of buying everything, which may have cost me a little in the end but I had no way to deal with it all from so far away after our wedding!

Happy New Year!
What florist are you using for your wedding at Donovan. My daugher is getting married there in June, and the quote she got from a local florist seems high. Love all your ideas.

@joyce: Hi Joyce! We’re using Rose with Rose Petals. She’s wonderful! If you need her contact info or anything else Vail related, let me know! Where do you live now?

I live in Michigan, my daughter in Vail, teaching elementary school in Gymsum. I got Rose’s name from Donovan, so will call her this week.
Thanks for your help!
