It’s All in the Neckline

December 17th, 2008 @ 11:24 am by Ms Fondue

Back in September, my bridesmaid Becka (you may remember her from the day I went gown shopping) was in Knoxville visiting family. She and her husband moved to South Carolina a year or so ago, and we rarely get to see them. So Mr. Fondue and I headed over to East Tennessee to hang out with them. (Too bad I didn’t know Miss Cheese then!)

Over the weekend, Becka and I headed out to David’s Bridal so she could get a good idea of what necklines looked best on her. My girls will be wearing tea-length black dresses of their choosing since they are all different sizes, and I want something that they will feel comfortable in. David’s didn’t have most of the options she tried on in stock in black, hence the variety of colors you see here. It’s amazing the difference a neckline can make!

She went in thinking she might want a halter, so she tried on a few of those.

She also tried on a dress with a bateau neck.

But the winner? The criss-cross V-neck! We liked the look of the one-piece dress, but we really liked it with the separate pieces.

Are your bridesmaids choosing their own dresses? What neckline was most popular among them?

I feel so old-school, but I am very much tied to the idea that all my girls have the same dress. I know it’s “the thing” now to allow them to pick to complement their individual styles and shapes, etc, I just can’t get into it.

Eeek… I think I may be a control freak :-/

Luckily, I’ve shared a couple of ideas with my girls on what I’m thinking in terms of dresses, and they’ve liked all of them. *phew* We all have pretty similar styles, and I think they trust that I want them to look their best as well, you know?

Oh gosh, I totally didn’t comment on the actual post at all… LOL

I meant to add that I really like the last two, especially the red one (I know it’ll be black) with the little cap-like sleeves. So flattering!

That one definitely looks best! I have some large-busted maids, so I might look into that neckline. Thanks!

I like the v-neck in the final photo. Very flattering!

I let my gals choose their own dresses from JCrew with the only stipulations that they be black and not floor length. They chose a variety of styles, from strapless to cap sleeves. I was relieved that they all found dresses that they liked and felt good in that also fit my vision for the wedding.

I agree with the final choice! I’m in my sisters wedding next fall and she gave each bridesmaid 4 options. The most popular was straight across strapless.

I’m old school and am having the same dress for everyone. We pretty much all have similar taste and the one I’m leaning towards they all lvoe, so hopefully it looks great!

The final choice is by far the most flattering. I really haven’t thought about bridesmaids dresses yet. I’m of the “deal with one thing at a time” bridal philosophy. If I see any dresses I like when I’m trying on dresses (in two weeks-eep!) then my sister will be there, so I’ll have her try them on.

I agree - the v-neck looks great. My BM chose her own dress. I don’t know why, but she immediately eliminated halters. The v-neck dresses looked the best on her and was what she wore.

I love the look of the v-neck. That’s what i’m hoping to find for my own wedding dress.

my maid of honor and bridesmaids also wore a criss-cross v-neck! They were all different sizes and it looked so flattering and beautiful on everyone.

I brought 2 different sized girls to David’s Bridal and they found one dress that both looked and turns out one other bridesmaid had picked out. I was all for mismatched dresses until I picked my dress and realized the dresses next to it couldn’t be sundresses (my original idea) and then I figured why not just match :)
The cut they liked was a strapless sweetheart - but one of my girls is very big chested and strapless doesn’t work so well so we are seeing if she can get away with the straps they offer to attach, otherwise she’ll be in a halter with my MOH.
