Mrs. Peep Toe, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, Policy Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Olive Oil Production Manager Engagement Date: December 16, 2007 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Blogging Since: November 26, 2008 Venue: Hotel Vitale About Me: I am a west coast lady who loves the San Francisco Bay Area. I love living with Mr. Peep and our animals: Huck the Dog and Ferris the Cat. I work to save the environment in San Francisco, while Mr. Peep makes ridiculously delicious Olive Oil. On any day you can find me reading the latest book I have gotten my hands on, eating Swedish Fish, and perusing wedding blogs! We are both champagne drinking foodies on a Bud Light budget. We are planning an eco-chic, intimate, and interfaith San Francisco City wedding.
About Mrs. Peep Toe

After posting our engagement pictures here, here and here, I thought I should post some tips I picked up from searching for our oh so fabulous photographer.

Photography was super important to me; without a great photographer- how would you get wedding porn??

I had seen and met* Anna Kuperberg before we were engaged, and loved her work. So the bar was extremely high. Yet, I quickly learned that producers of fabulous wedding porn with the splashiest websites would require Mr. Spice and I to lose either an arm or a leg, or both.

So I did what every budget bride does (or should do); I did a ridiculous amount of research. I highly recommend checking out Project Wedding or Yelp for vendor reviews (and don’t be afraid to search for photographers on Craigslist). Read the reviews, and if you find a vendor you are interested in, email the bride/client who reviewed said vendor. This almost always gave me better insight into the photographer and a couple times the bride even emailed me a link to her wedding pictures, score.

Next, I emailed a ridiculous amount of photographers. Often just to see if their price point was within my budget, and if it wasn’t, I would send a polite email back stating, “thank you for the email, but unfortunately at this time your packages aren’t within our budget.” This is key.

Not only is this a polite thing to do, but a few of the photographers emailed me back and asked what I was looking for, what my budget was, and maybe they could work something out.

One photographer who was willing to work with us was Carmen Alvarez Photography. She has fabulous energy and an insane ability to capture emotion. I also learned a great lesson once I contacted Carmen; don’t judge a photographer by her/his website. If you think you might like a photographer’s work, email them for a link to their current work- it is often better than you can imagine.

Don’t be afraid to negotiate. As long as you are respectful, vendors understand that every bride is on a budget and they are often able to be flexible.

If that doesn’t work, find out if a photographer you love has an assistant in the wings or knows of an up and coming photographer that they’d recommend. I loved a photographer who was well out of our budget, but she was willing to offer the job to her assistant for a price we could afford.

That goes to my next tip, don’t be afraid of new talent. Especially the ones right out of school. We really enjoyed meeting Cathryn Lovecraft, who was just making a name for herself in San Francisco because she seemed to know all the latest tricks of the trade.

Next up, once you find a few photographers within your budget, set up meetings with all of them. I recommend setting up your meetings as close together as possible. This way you can compare apples to apples and ask all the same questions. I also VERY STRONGLY suggest that you make sure both you and your fiance go to the meetings together. I met with one photographer that I thought would be fantastic, but I was alone and the chemistry was off; plus, I found the website she used to display her photos to be very cumbersome. Don’t forget to ask for a link to a complete set of a recent wedding- check out the layout and pay attention to how expensive it would be to order pictures.

Finally, book your photographer ASAP. This is to ensure you get your photographer at this year’s price and not next year’s!

In the end, go with your gut. We chose Mandi because we both totally enjoyed being around her. We both left the meeting excited about our wedding, and impressed with her knowledge of the area near where our wedding is going to take place. Plus, since reading Anna Ruthmann’s post about becoming a green photographer, I think Mandi fits the bill!!!

As a final thought, one last engagement picture:

Choosing and Negotiating a Fabulous Photographer : wedding photography san francisco Engfen
I think we kinda look like school kids with a secret crush on one another in this one.

So what negotiation tips do you have? How did you end up choosing your photographer??

*She photographed our beloved Huckleberry for the book Designer Dogs. If you or a loved one is on the hunt for a loveable mutt- you gotta get this book.

this is actually my first comment ever after reading Weddingbee for the past couple years.

I just got engaged last Saturday (yay!) and now am overwhelmed with all the planning that lies ahead for us. I love the work of one photographer, but have absolutely no reference for how much a photographer should cost us and what is considered to be a good deal. does anyone have suggestions as what is really expensive, and what is decent (I understand that everyone has a different reference for what they consider expensive and whatnot, but I’d appreciate the advice!)

I have a few tips.

1) Put a request out for proposals on weddingwire.com. I actually found one of the two photographers we met wtih this way, she sent me a proposal. I loved her work, but ultimately went with another photographer. Still, I would have never discovered her otherwise.

2) Do not fall in love with a photographer that has no pricing information on their website. I’ve found that all the ones that did this were WAY above my price range! If you love the work, but see no pricing, e-mail right away before you get your heart set on a photographer that you can’t afford.

3) Take other bride’s advice. How did people plan weddings without sites like weddingwire.com and the knot for vendor reviews? Indie Bride is also a great resource and also where I found my photographer.

As to how I chose my photographer, I actually thought I’d narrowed it down to three when I decided to contact her. Her pricing was good and her first e-mail was different from any other vendor, she wanted to know why we chose our venue, about us personally, etc. I was already considering her when she was added as a sponsor on apracticalwedding.com, so I knew we had similar views on weddings. When we met her, she confirmed this and talked about her own wedding, and she got excited when we told her about our intimate wedding, she said they were her favorite to shoot. I can’t WAIT to do our engagement shoot next month and to have her shoot our big day!

@Congrats June, first I’d recommend that you either set a budget or at least outline one. There are a ton of resources out there on how to do it. I happen to like
Real Simple
. They recommend photography to be about 10% of your budget, I took that number as a rough outline. Second, I think it slightly depends on the area you live in. I think SF is a more expensive area, so what I thought was a small budget seems to be a big budget for other folks.
Finally, spend what you think you are comfortable with and as long as you can afford it. Go with it.
PS Base photographers in SF seem to start between 1.5-3k, and probably average between 4 and 6, but maybe a photographer can better answer that.

@budgetbeautiful, great tips. Good luck with your e-pics!!

These are great tips! One other thing to add is that if you fall in love with a photographer’s style, but her/his prices are out of your range, you can ask them if they have recommendations for other photographers with a similar aesthetic. Often, they can recommend people who have second-shot for them or who have attended a number of their workshops.

I wanted Anna, too, but couldn’t afford her. But when I told her that, she offered up her assistant, Sara Remington, who was AMAZING. And then Anna did all of the post-production work (never underestimate the value of a talented cropper). All of that for about half of Anna’s cost. Totally worth it.

In addition to the tips above… I’d like to add:

1. Make sure you see an ENTIRE wedding.. not just a few pictures of multiple weddings!! I learned my lesson on that one!

2. Know what you’re getting for the price!! Sometimes it’s worth paying a little extra to get A LOT extra!! When I was first engaged, someone recommended a photographer.. and being green in the wedding process… I booked her immediately. BIG MISTAKE! I researched and found that there was SOO much more out there! We were paying X amount for this photographer.. but only for her “creative fee”… it included NO PICTURES! It was $20 for each 4X6! That can get REALLY expensive! I ended up forfeiting our deposit and going with a new photographer. She costs about $2000 more than the original photographer… but we get a disc with EVERY SINGLE PICTURE from every shoot (Engagement, Rehearsal Dinner, Wedding, Post- Wedding, Etc). It’s TOTALLY worth the extra $. I know I have a lot of friends who would like to see my pictures… but they don’t want to pay $20 per picture to do so. This way… I can opt to print pictures at CVS/Wal Mart/etc for $0.20 for some people… or pay a little extra and go to http://www.mpix.com and get professional quality!

Check out my photographer! She and her husband travel!! And they’re amazing!!

You look so cute in your photos! Mandi did a great job. Please give Huck a hug and a kiss for me, he is truly a wonderful dog, and handsome to boot. I really enjoyed photographing him.

Thanks for the shout out for green photography, this is important to me too– I donated all holiday reprint sales to Environmental Defense, see here http://kuperblog.com

If you’re really interested in photographers who care about the environment, check out the EcoPhotoBlog here:

And Lucy, thanks for mentioning Sara. She loved working with you and she had a great time at your wedding. I wasn’t there, but I can see from the photos how much you and your husband love each other :)

My now husband and I had a small civil reception at our home in Marin County in August of 2008, with about 15 people. We chose Dorothy Hatchel (www.dorothyhatchel.com) to photograph our special day. She took shots of me getting ready and then the three of us went to Muir Beach for some special before shots. We absolutely love the shots. The colors are beautiful, soft and natural. We both look great, relaxed and happy. Then she photographed our friends before the ceremony as well as the ceremony and the reception afterwards. We love all the shots that she did for us, they are wonderful memories and many of them are getting framed for our home. Dorothy is very easy going and friendly and she makes you feel very comfortable. We both highly recommend her. Oh and by the way, my husband is a professional photographer so the bar is high ;-)

These are great tips! So glad I followed a lot of them for my wedding! Seeing eye to eye with my photographer was really important to me, and I ended up feeling really confident in his eye/ability for the whole day (he shot us getting ready through the end of the reception). I’ve recommended Kip (www.karsonphotography.com) to the multitude of my friends who are now getting married. He was so energetic and fun to work with, and I LOVE my pics! We all had a blast working together!
