Make Me Up

December 17th, 2008 @ 3:47 pm by Mrs. Sushi

I’m still debating what I want to do hair and makeup wise. I have already chosen a hair and makeup artist to “do me” based on rave reviews from some of the Hawaii Knottie girls. And sooo many of you lovely brides recommend having a trial before the wedding day to make sure everything looks right and holds up for X amount of hours, but that being said, I won’t be able to get a trial ’til I’m in Hawaii… a few days before the big wedding day. That doesn’t give me much time between trial and ceremony to fix any mistakes (or totally change my look).

The hair part is pretty easy. I’m looking for long loose curls and side swept bangs…

But makeup… well, I’m still debating. Should I do a strong smoky eye with neutral lips?

Or should I try a bold red lip with more neutral eye?

Should I do some DIY trials first? How did you decide how you wanted your hair and makeup without a professional trial?

What do you usually do? I don’t think you want to look too different that day from your normal self and I left it up to the expert! I showed him a picture of my dress and let him go to town and I was 100% in love!

Agreed with pinklau325….on your wedding day you should look like your best self, not someone different!

Plus, keep in mind you’ll be doing a LOT of kissing on the day, especially for photos. With a bolder lip you’ll be reapplying more often, so that might be more of a pain for you.

I did a destination wedding, and did a few hair trials in my hometown - and took tons of pictures to my stylist in my wedding city. Same goes for makeup - I met my makeup artist four days before my wedding, when we did our trial. The key is to make sure you speak up with you like - and more importantly - don’t like something.

I love the hair idea, but I vote smokey eye & neutral lips! LOVE the look of Eva Longoria-Parker.

I like the smokey eyes and neutral lips. You should go to a makeup counter and they can help you with the look and then you can take pictures! That way you will get an idea of what you like before you get to Hawaii!

From your pic, I’d guess smokey eye/natural lip would work best for you. I also like that in the Katie Holmes pic her eyes are in shades of brown rather than black/grey … looks more natural.

In other news … how young does Katie Holmes look in that pic?! And that photo of Michelle Williams always makes me so sad …

… also agree with Mrs PN - just because you can’t have a trial with your person, doesn’t mean you can’t have some kind of trial-run just to see what suits you. Even if you just try out a few looks on yourself.

I’m echo-ing Linerella - lots of kissing equals lots of time re-applying!

I love the side swept bang look and I agree with the PPs about going with a more neutral lip color.

Yes again on neutral lips - I think it suits you, is less maintenance-heavy, and is more tropical wedding in Hawaii feeling than fancy red lips are. The hair shots are gorgeous!

Smoky eyes!

Red lips will just make you check your teeth, kiss the fiance/husband less and worry you about the lipstick being on or off! Take the stress away.

Smoky eye is also pretty much an evening look…..I agree that a focus on your eyes, with a neutral lip would be best for Hawaii, and for just looking like yourself, but I would be careful about phrasing your instructions to the artist as smoky eye, only because if anyone knows how to do a popping, dramatic, smoky eye, it’s a make-up artist, and that look might be sort of strange in the day time.

My sister is getting married in Hawaii in less than two weeks, and I can’t wait! She’s having trials when she gets there, and I would have to echo the advice of others that the most important part of a good trial is speaking up!!!

Not to beat a dead horse…but I agree; red lips only look good for about five minutes before you start having to reapply. Maybe you could do red lips at your rehearsal dinner, so you can still rock that look during your weekend.

Also, you could consider doing a smokey eye in a color, rather than in the typical black. Your olive skin would be perfect for a navy blue eyeshadow or even a deep purple or green. (Does that sound totally ugly? It’s not. I only know this because I’m a makeup feind and I do that look quite a lot.)

I’m thinking neutral lips too for all the stated reasons. But how about when you do your trial have your makeup artist do the simple eyes and red lipstick first. Give yourself some time to gawk and take some photos (go outside for some good light!) Then go back in and have her wipe off your lipstick, do up your eyes and apply the more neutral lips. That way you get to see both, “live” with the red lipstick a little bit and have a few days to make a choice.

Hi miss sushi;

I really like the smookey eyes and neutral lips because with strong lipstick atention only drawn into your lips but you want all of your face to be center of the attention not only your lips. and By the way does anyone knows who is that women in the third picture with light blue top? she is very pretty. Sorry I am a foreingner I am not familiar with celebrities here.
