I'm from Chicago, he's from NYC, and we both miss public transit and great pizza. We have an adorable muppet dog called Paco. I'm part hippie with a healthy dash of hip hop superstar, have excessive empathy for animals, and have not one, but two bionic eyes (long story). We're broke and it ain't no joke. It can't stop us from planning the bold and whimsical wedding of our dreams, but we've had to get pretty creative to make it work, yo!
About Mrs. Meatball

I must confess, I’m a bit health-obsessed these days. I’ve only got 5 months ’til the big day, and I have to be honest: I haven’t Shredded It since starting my new job. It was so much easier when I was semi-unemployed and could wake up and leisurely work out before getting on with my day. But adjusting my schedule to wake up early (especially with the frigid mornings) isn’t happening, and after work I have so much other stuff to do, that working out falls to the wayside. So, yep, I’ve been a naughty bride, and Jillian Michaels is probably sticking pins into my voodoo metabolism doll.

Is My Body Too Noodle-iscious For Ya? : wedding diet hollywood Voodoo

(please have mercy, Jillian!)

I’m also encroaching on my 31st birthday, and I’m mad at myself because I’ve had a long-standing goal of getting on a habitual regimen by this time in my life. I’m not talking radical crash-diet craziness, I’m talking a maintainable, regular routine. See, this has always been a struggle for me. But one of my major goals for next year is to conquer my diet/fitness issues and get an effing grip!

Let me share the BEST. THING. EVER: Konjac Shirataki Noodles!

Is My Body Too Noodle-iscious For Ya? : wedding diet hollywood Shirata

(yum)

These things are amazing with a capital UH. They’re made from Konjac, which is kind of like a yam, but the fiber of which is used to make flours and gelatin-like material that is then formed into noodles. Zero calorie, zero net carb noodles, people! And they’ve got 3 grams of fiber per serving. AND, they take zero preparation time! Best of all, they’re inexpensive, and come in many different shapes/sizes to combat food boredom. Check out the selection: Angel Hair, Mini Pearl, Rigatoni, Tiny Pasta, Mini Ring-O’s, Spaghetti, Penne, Linguine, Fettuccine, Orzo-Rice Shape, Lasagna, Ditalini, and Thin Noodles. Or you can get the variety case and get a bit of everything!

You may know the name Shirataki from the tofu-based noodles available in some grocery stores, but I think they smell and taste a bit funky. The Konjac-derived variety is way tastier, and I even prefer the texture. They can be used in place of any normal pasta or rice, in stir-frys, soups, with marinara or sauce… the sky is the limit! The only difference is that these don’t require any cooking - they’re ready to eat.

MaPo found a great online shop where you can order a whole case of 20 for only $39.95 with free shipping. That’s less than $2/pack, and each pack has 3 servings. To give you an idea, I ate 2/3 of a pack for dinner last night and 1/3 leftovers for lunch today and it was perfect. The Konjac kind don’t require refrigeration like the Tofu ones do, so a case is a great non-perishable way to stock your kitchen with healthy goodness. Plus, they arrived in like, 3 days - not bad!

I ordered the variety case, so I’ll keep reporting as I try different recipes. Last night I mixed the fettucini size with scrambled egg, frozen spinach, ginger, garlic, Island Soyaki and hot sauce. It was fantastically delicious!

Have you tried Shirataki before? Do you have a favorite recipe to share? Who wants to join me for Operation Flab to Fab?

These are great– I get them at Asian grocery stores (Ranch99) and it’s so easy to throw together a cold noodle salad! yum….

Um-I was expecting your noddle addiction to somehow tie into your lack of weight shredding (at least that’s how MY noddle addiction as worked!)

I can’t believe these are calorie free with zero net carbs. I almost can’t even believe it. Now of course, they probably have little nutritional value so I can’t change course and live on noodle alone, but it does mean I can have the noodle-to-stir fry ration that I love, without any guilt at all (or horrible make-up workouts)……I can hear the hallelujahs ringing out in the distance as I read this post!

There are some really great free (or next to free) yoga options in the city! Have you gone to the ones at the park at Runyon? That would be a cheap, fun way to start a fitness routine… Plus, you could hike afterwards if you wanted to! I find that aiming for 3 - 5 days of exercise a week (no excuses!) keeps me in good shape, and living in Los Angeles gives us a lot of options. And those noodles are awesome!

I usually eat vegetarian 3 days a week, no carbs after 5. It really helps with maintaining weight and I swear my stomach has shrunk. If you try it, just make sure you add protein to each meal, like tofu, beans, eggs, and you won’t get as hungry after.

@MissCricket: I’ll have to check that out, thanks! I love hiking there, but never have done free yoga :)

@Angelinaaahh: I’m a through and through vegetarian, and it does help a bit but its hard to not rely on carbs cuz they’re easy to come by, but I try. Love tofu beans and eggs, all at the same time! No carbs after 5 is great advice, thanks!

This is so great!! I had been trying the tofu ones that require refrigeration which was kind of a pain (takes up a lot of space)– this is perfect- thanks so much!

“You may know the name Shirataki from the tofu-based noodles available in some grocery stores, but I think they smell and taste a bit funky. The Konjac-derived variety is way tastier, and I even prefer the texture.” Just to clarify, Shirataki itself refers to the plain konjac noodles, “Tofu Shirataki” has both konjac and tofu in it.

You can also get blocks of konnyaku that you can slice up and stir-fry. Justbento.com/justhungry.com has some recipes with konnyaku:

this is great if it works for you, but for some people these are hard to digest, so you may want to try a little at a time…it’s basically all fiber! ;)

I tried the tofu ones but I did not enjoy it. I think I’m going to give these a try and just experiment more. I hope people have recipes to share!
