The Engagement Countdown Has Begun

December 17th, 2008 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Snapdragon

A big day has come in the course of Mr. Dragon’s and my journey towards the altar: The engagement ring has been bought, set, picked up, and is now hiding somewhere in my apartment (he made me promise not to snoop). We have been saving up for this for a long time, and selecting, and then making the Big Purchase was an adventure, to say the least!

About six months ago, Mr. Dragon and I - totally on a lark - stopped into a local jewelry store to look at engagement bands and settings so that Mr. Dragon could get an idea of what I liked. We spent about two hours in the store, trying on different bands, metals, everything! By the time we were done, we were both totally exhausted and DONE with shopping. Who gets tired of jewelry shopping?!? Oh, the Snapdragons, that’s who. Originally, I was dead set on something like this:

We spent the bulk of our shopping checking out rings similar to the one in the image above. Finally, as we were leaving the store (with nothing in hand), Mr. D took a deep breath and said something to the effect of, “I really want you to get whatever ring you want, but, I don’t feel good about that style of ring. It’s pretty and nice and everything, but not at all the sort of ring I ever pictured you wearing as an engagement ring.”As soon as he said that, I knew he was right. I like the style, and that’s why I was attracted to it, but… it’s not the RIGHT one. For me, I *might* someday get a cocktail or right hand ring (in cheaper stones - no diamonds!!!) in the halo style, but it’s not my wedding ring.

On our way home, we passed another jewelry store and decided to give shopping another go. Whaddya know - they had a completely different style that Mr. Dragon and I BOTH fell in love with. THAT was the right ring. In less than half an hour, we walked out of the store with our setting.

Now, at the time, we had a family friend who wanted to sell us a beautiful family diamond at a wholesale price (which was the only way we could afford it at the time). We thought we were set, and we were so excited. We especially loved the idea of buying a diamond that came from a friend we knew and loved. Later that night, we were devastated to find a “pepper flake” inclusion in the top of the diamond that we hadn’t noticed before. We were definitely looking for a bargain when it came to the diamond, but…. it was a large “pepper flake” that was totally obvious. We just couldn’t pull the trigger on it.

So the setting went into a jewelry armoire for six months… living in a dark and lonely drawer - until now! We scrimped and saved to be able to locate another diamond, we found it, got it set, and Mr. Dragon picked it up last night!

It’s exciting, and I can’t wait for us to actually have our private moment where we officially commit to spending the rest of our lives together. Though we have been committed in our hearts for a very long time, I can’t wait to make our engagement official, and then finally become husband and wife. I’m ready to seal the deal, sister!

Did anyone else end up selecting an engagement ring that was completely different from the image in your mind? Or did your fiance select your ring all on his own?

The ring you had your heart set on is pretty much exactly what I was hoping for! My fiance knew it too, but went a totally different direction. He ended up using the diamond his father proposed to his mother with and picked out a setting because he wanted to make it more me. It is a little antiquey looking and I love it even more and think I’d liek a cocktail ring someday, but glad its not my engagement ring!

Mr. Peep went all out on his own and did a fabulous job if I do say so myself. I can’t wait to see your ring. How exciting!!! I couldn’t stop staring at mine for the first month (who am I kidding, I still can’t stop staring at it).

I always thought I wanted a pave ring, but when I tried them on FH and I agreed it looked like costume jewelery on me… so after trying on many a ring the lady showed us something that was PERFECT - like pave but not all the way around and with larger stones. FH saw how much I loved it and spent (what I now know as) months looking for the perfect version of that ring.
Miss Snapdragon, I’m so excited for you and we can’t wait to see pictures!

Not to be snarky, but why do you have to wait for him to “present” the ring to you. If you’ve already made the decision to get married, then why don’t you just be engaged. I don’t know why us girls make such a big deal out of him asking you. I mean, it’s a mutual decision, is it not/

When I first started looking online, I was dead set on a solitaire with no extras. I thought the halo/pave settings looked tacky from the pictures. When I started looking in real life I realized that I hated prongs, and that halo pave settings were actually gorgeous and delicate looking in real life. My boyfriend recently proposed with a Ritani Endless Love setting and it’s absolutely gorgeous–and the center diamond is perfect.

I always thought … classic colorless brilliant round in platinum! Always. I ended up with Fancy Light Yellow, Cushion cut in Yellow/White Gold … Go figure, but i love it tremendously!

@Mrs. Pinot Noir: Oh ME TOO, trust me. :)
@PunkRock: Because everybody’s different, that’s why! For us, we love to make a big deal out of life’s big moments!
@AliCherri1: Isn’t that funny how that happens? I had been POSITIVE that that halo style was the one for me. I’m glad Mr. Dragon spoke up, because he was totally right. I’m glad you found something you loved too!
@Christina: I tried on several of the Endless Love settings, too, and it was so amazingly gorgeous! I love Ritani - their designs are so feminine and beautiful.

Can’t wait to see it! I am also one anxiously waiting the arrival of my ring..and get this..my guy is PICKING IT OUT..

I was a bit nervous about this, but he has asked me what I wanted and we were both on the same page.

Congrats Miss S.D.! Take plenty of pics.

And Ritani does make lovely settings. I am partial to Jack Kelege biiig time. But so far, what we’re wanting is a nice round solitaire, with double baguettes on each side of the stone in platinum.

West Coast bride

The West Coast groom picked mine out all on his own, and I personally wouldn’t have wanted it it any other way.

Every couple is different, but my perspective was always that the ring is mine, and as such, I should love it. To be totally honest, I really could carel ess if West Coast Groom liked my ring at all! But like I say, that’s a reflection of our relationship dynamic. We shopped around together for a few months, and I commented on ones that I liked, and didn’t like, and told him why. He’s a good listener:-)

Although my ring has a flaw in it, I really don’t care. It’s only noticeable from the side, and ultimately, the reason I can never stop looking at my ring is because of how beautiful the symbolism behind it is:-) It also helps that no one has noticed the flaw except me at this point!

I think the whole “moment” of engagement thing is really a reflection of how you are as a couple…..I’m often in the leadership/initiative role in our team efforts as a couple, so it was more meaningful and special to me that this was a task he initiated and managed all on his own (even if I could tell weeks in advance that it was probably coming:-)

Hope you’ll be able to use the WeddingBee PRO photo tips to take a beatiful pic for us!!!!

We picked my ring out together. I didn’t really want a ring, but it was a gift that was special to him to give. We looked on the internet and went to antique dealers. I started out being drawn to rings with elaborate designs and engraved sides, but we ended up choosing the most simple and elegant one. If you are in the know about the ring, you do surprise yourself. Anyway I love my ring, and even though we, like the snapdragons, had decided to get married long before we made it “official,” it did not taken away from the actual proposal, which was fun and spontaneous. it made my fiance very happy to make the gesture, and i was happy that i could make that moment complete for him.

Congratulations, Snapdragons! Wish you all the best!

Not to be Debbie Downer….but I agree with PunkRock, the ring has been purchased and all the *excitement* has been sucked out of the proposal! =(

Technically you’re already engaged now, you’ve even started planning the wedding.
