Trials and Tribulations

December 17th, 2008 @ 10:28 am by Mrs. Lemonade

So, as I mentioned last week I made my way to SA for my hair and makeup trial. Overall I am pretty happy with the results. Roseanne is incredibly adorable and very talented — she even gave my sister a haircut for free while we were sitting there!

Anyhow, I believe with a few minor tweaks we will have the PERFECT wedding day look (for me at least).
Okay, okay! Enough with the chitchat and on to the pictures.
Now, you know I love you guys so I’m doing the unthinkable and posting the worst pictures I’ve ever taken in my life on the Internet. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.

The before:

Oh Lord, the horrors! Look away quickly!!

The full after:

The hair:

The 8-hours later residuals:

I actually like the last picture the best. I feel like the freshly applied makeup was a bit intense — the eyeliner a bit too dark, the bronzer a bit too strong, and the lips a bit too reddish/nude. However, in looking at the last picture, with the exception of a reapply of the gloss, it’s clear to me that my super oily skin totally absorbed the makeup and mellowed with time.

So herein lies my conflict… should I have the wedding day application start off softer or should I have her apply the full-on intense look to make sure things stay put late into the night?

start soft! reapply halfway through your day. my sister did this and it worked perfectly. you’ll just need to up your bronzer and lips.

also you probably aren’t having most of your pictures taken at the end of the day, so go with the way you want to look and then touch up if you need to.

start softer! it is easier to touch up than to be wearing intense make up that you don’t necessarily like–especially for pictures.

The results are great! You look so pretty!

I’d maybe have her tone it down just a little when you first apply and then reapply as needed. I’ve always heard that the make-up may seem intense (and I’m sure that’s mostly because it is and it’s different that your everyday look), but it shows up better in the pro pictures than a softer look.

I agree with everyone else–go softer, and re-apply as needed. The make-up look that she did is awfully strong, and from my own personal experience, you’ll look back on the pictures and it won’t look like you. At least, that’s what happened to me when I had make-up done like that for my high school graduation. Anytime I see those pictures, I’m like “Who is that mannequin??”

Unless you’re getting married in low lighting followed by a reception in a dark venue, you don’t need to pile on make-up for your photographer’s sake. A good photographer will create and find light for the photos to turn out well under most conditions.

I completely agree with everyone else. You should feel pretty for your entire day. Plus. you will probably have to reapply a little anyways if you end up crying (like I know I will). :)

I agree with going a bit softer … if you think it looks too strong in these photos, then it will probably look too strong in your wedding photos.

Also, remember that the start of the day (when your make-up is the strongest) will be when you meet your groom at the aisle … and surely it’s more important to look nice for him than the photos :)

(p.s. not saying you don’t look nice - you look beautiful, even without the make-up)

I agree with all of the PP’s… start softer! My trial was way too intense for me, so when I went back on the day of, I actually brought a picture of Mrs. CreamPuff on her wedding day and got exactly what I wanted. It lasted all night without any touch-ups and looked great. Also, weirdly enough, I’m a HUGE cryer in every day life but didn’t cry nearly as much as I thought I would on my wedding day. I was way too excited/happy/busy to cry!

I feel that you actually look more pretty in your “undone” photo than all done up.

Maybe because you’re more comfortable that way?

I think that’s a sign that the makeup trial wasn’t right for you. I agree to start soft.

Start softer — it’s so much more you, and so much less “made up.” ;-) You look gorgeous — lucky makeup artist that has you as a canvas!

I agree with just about everyone who beat me to it :-) Start softer, reapply as needed.

I’m actually hiring my stylist to come with for a few hours during/after the ceremony to fix my face after the inevitable waterworks. That way I can enter the reception fresh-faced. I have HORRIBLE dry skin that tends to flake and make any make-up I’m wearing look cakey. I’m coming prepared :-D

Agree with pp. I had the exact same dilemma after my make up trial. I had him take it down a notch and was so happy that I did. It was what I wanted from the beginning and still looked great by the end of the night.

yeah start softer. I like the toned down look better. The first picture is pretty, but it reminds me too much of a cheerleader or dance team captain. I don’t know why! It just doesn’t look like wedding makeup. But by the second picture it looks a lot better.

You’re adorable!

You look lovely in the pictures, but I agree, softer is better.

You’re going to look so gorgeous on the big day! :)

Miss Lemonade, I think you look most beautiful in your natural image.

May I offer a suggestion? When you do a re-trial, have your makeup artist apply your blush closer to your eye orbits (starting at the outer corner of your nostrils, moving across the TOP of your cheekbones, and angled out to the outer corner of your eyes. I know this probably reads as a little odd; I’m a curator-in-training/architecture critic, so I’m constantly analyzing structure. You have amazing cheekbones, so highlight them! :)
