And roll it did! As soon as we got seated, our pastor prayed a blessing over the evening and the catering staff began bringing out the first courses. After everyone had been served, the toasts quickly began.

A quick side note: You’ll recall that we had more than one best man and maid of honor… which meant the toasts would need more time than they usually take at a typical wedding. We wanted to ensure we would have ample time for the speeches and table visits, as well as plenty of time for dancing afterward. As such, we provided the wait staff a schedule for serving the various courses, spacing the first few evenly across the speeches, and the remaining while we visited each guest table.

z177194

Mommy and Daddy Daffodil kicked off the toasts, sharing some of the sweetest words. It was so apparent that my dad had thought so deeply and labored over his speech, and I was so incredibly touched. MIL and FIL Daffodil followed them with some warm well-wishes and words of encouragement. You could tell they were so proud and excited - it was adorable!

z17719401

BIL Daffodil was up next. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, seeing as he was Mr. D’s younger brother. His speech turned out to be somewhat random, quite hilarious, and completely endearing! He capped it off with a special performance of the Wedding March. (BIL Daffodil has the unique talent of being able to play melodies merely by squeezing air through the palms of his hands! smiley3)

z17719201

The other two best men followed BIL Daffodil. Both of them are close college friends of Mr. D and mine, and they definitely shared some great stories as well as very touching words! Both of my sisters and maidens-of-honor followed them, giving their toasts together. Such heartfelt and affirming words! They truly are my best friends smiley1.

Once the speeches were done, I managed to slip out to change into my traditional Chinese qipao gown. The gown was a gift from Mommy Daffodil, and I wanted to be wearing it in all of our photos with our guests! Since we had opted not to do a receiving line, we planned to visit each table so that we could personally welcome each guest. It was certainly a precious opportunity, as it was the one rare moment of the day we actually got to talk to every person!

z17719402

After visiting all 21 tables, it was time for the cake cutting!

z17719203

z17719204

We fed one another our first bites… and realized that we were STARVING! We had only gotten to eat a couple bites of our appetizer. I tell you, cake had never tasted so good! I must admit we finished the slice quite quickly!

z177196

We then returned to our seats. By this time, we were REALLY starving… and came back to find that our plates had been cleared! However, we had no time to wallow in our dismay, for before we knew it, the slide show began! Sister Daffodil had slaved away for months to craft truly the best wedding slide show ever! To this day, every time we watch it, it inevitably causes bouts of fun laughter and simultaneously brings tears of joy to our eyes from all the fond memories.

z17719205

So then, it was time for the first dance. We had to keep the schedule going! I was about to get up from my seat and slip out to change back into my wedding gown, when the DJ made an unexpected announcement. What was going on?? Everything had been flowing so smoothly that we were in fact ahead of schedule. But this wasn’t part of the plan…?

To be continued… smiley1

@nada122: we didn’t really stick to tradition much at all when it came to planning our schedule! i just knew the elements i wanted to have, and i also wanted to find a way to minimize the time that guests would just be sitting around waiting without any food or activity to keep them occupied. i also wanted to find a way to personally thank each guest for coming but at the same time, not to keep everyone waiting for hours (hence the table visits - which I’ve actually seen done at quite a few weddings). My cousin-in-law, who helped another girl as her day-of-coordinator, suggested letting the wait staff know to when specifically to serve each dish. Many times, the wait staff feel like if toasts or something are going on, they don’t want to interrupt, which leaves guests hungry as they wait until all of that stuff is done…and it also takes up a lot of time too. So, that was the only reason! :-)

And when I say each dish, I mean the various courses…We had a Chinese banquet, so each table was served 10 courses! :P

how did you have a chinese banquet at the westin hotel? did you have catered food? did it turn out well? it seems like such a great idea because chinese restaurants are often so noisy and packed! you look gorgeous in your qipao by the way!

@diana: The Westin Bonaventure is actually one of the few hotels in the LA area that has an in-house Chinese catering business (the group is called Mandarin West), so for all of their events, we have the option of either having Western or Chinese food. The food was actually amazing! All of our guests absolutely loved it. I highly recommend them!

Do you think you could do a review of the Bonaventure? I’m getting married in October and very possibly having a Chinese banquet there too. Who and how was working with your catering manager? Any tips when booking this vendor? Thanks!
