And They’re Off!

December 19th, 2008 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Sushi

Our invites are officially sent. After some delay and procrastination, I finally stuck them in the mail box today. Not only did I use labels on our envelopes, I also used non-matching stamps. Ohhh the horror! I was hoping to be able to use these:

They would have matched very nicely with our red envelopes. But lo and behold, our invites needed 59 cent stamps. These were my options:

At the first post office I went to, they did not have any 59 cent stamps; they were going to order them for me, but when they called to put in an order they were told that because of the holiday rush, they wouldn’t make it to the post office till January 9th. Since our RSVP date is January 15th, that was a no-go.

The second post office I went to did not have the heart stamp, but had plenty stamps of Mr. Michener. At this point, I could care less what stamp was on our invites; I just needed to mail them out. The lovely post lady pointed out that the guy was wearing a lei, and I said, “Perfect, since my wedding is in Hawaii”. LoL. When I got home, my curiousness got to me and I googled James Michener. Not only is he originally from Pennsylvania but he wrote “Tales from the South Pacific” and “Hawaii”. Coincidence? I think not.

That must be a huge weight off your shoulders, and I kinda love the kitsch of the Michener stamps!

“Hawaii” is a very long, but good book. I read it the first time I went to Hawaii. I wonder if any of your guests will make the connection :)

@MichelleM2B: I’ve never read the book, but when I was in middle school (in Hawaii) we had to watch the movie in my Hawaiian Monarchy class. I’m curious if anyone will make the connection too!

Congrats on getting the invites out. I think the Michener stamps are perfect! I love how, even though it was a random find, it ties into your Hawaiian wedding.

Just so you know, I saw James Michener and immediately thought “oh, she’s referring to Hawaii”, so really, it’s not that big a stretch. He’s very well-known for that! I love the stamp choice!

That stamp is AWESOME! I would totally buy a airplane ticket to a Hawaiian wedding if the invitation came like that! I think it’s so perfect :)

The first post office that I went to for my invitation stamps didn’t have any either. What’s with that? I’ve never in my life had that happen, before or since!

Do remember that you can order any current stamp from usps.com; they charge hardly anything for shipping, and they usually come in just a few days. Much easier and faster than dealing with your local post office.

I giggled when reading this b/c the exact same thing happened to me (Hawaii wedding, no love stamps, go with Michener). Your response was much more positive throughout than mine though In the end I think they are pretty unique, so lucky for us, right? :-)

Ha ha, very cute. You should have a pop quiz on your wedding day and give a prize to the person who can correctly recall which famous author was featured on the stamps!

Argh! I had the same problem. Was all set with the red heart 42 cent stamp but they were too heavy!
