Bridesmaids Debacle

December 19th, 2008 @ 1:20 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

I love my bridesmaids. Each one of them is very near and dear to my heart, and I’m thrilled to have them all stand up with me as I marry the love of my life. But… there is a slight problem. They all live in very fun, exciting places that happen to be VERY far away from me!

Now I don’t want to go all bridezilla on you, but ideally I would like my bridesmaids to live close to make planning my bachelorette party and bridal shower easier. And let’s be honest, I’m selfish and I want my friends near me!

Take a gander at this:

My dear sister Kate, who is my maid of honor, natch, is living large in New York City.

Me and my gorgeous sister, on New Year’s Eve last year. I miss her!

Bridesmaids Debacle : wedding bridesmaid Newyea
Later on in the evening. Rocking our pouty lips and open-mouth smile poses, respectively. And poor Mr. Powder Puff caught in the middle.

My best friend Keri, a bridesmaid, is attending a fabulous grad school in Washington DC.

Bridesmaids Debacle : wedding bridesmaid N231858
She’s Greek, beautiful and super smart! And she can make a mean gyro.

Another bridesmaid Jamie, a good friend of mine from high school, is living in Virginia with her husband.

Bridesmaids Debacle : wedding bridesmaid Meand02
was a bridesmaid in her wedding a few years ago!

And finally, there’s my fourth bridesmaid Kristyn, who lives in Michigan with her fiance.

Kristyn and Mr. Powder Puff. When she met her fiance, she told him she was 110 pounds of muscle and wit. I love her and her sassy pants!

I love my girls, and am so proud of them for what they’ve accomplished in their lives and where they’ve ended up. But at the same time, I wish they lived closer so they could share in my excitement and help me out! What’s a girl to do!?

Do your bridesmaids live close to you? How do you handle wedding responsibilities if you’re far apart?

Sniff…mine are mostly far away too, but I am lucky to have 2 in Denver. I know what you mean about wanting your friends to be near. We’ve all kept close through the wedding website and emails. I also love the BM newsletter idea, but with working full-time and being in grad school full-time, I’m not sure I could pull it off!

I am in the same situation, only its mostly my fault. I am in school in DC. One of my bridesmaids is here with me, but the rest live in California (my sister lives in SF, the other two live near San Diego), and what’s more they don’t really know one another. I am hoping to start a newsletter, to keep them all in the loop about what is going on with me so I can feel like I am sharing this time with them. I will be using it so that they can get to know one another, to open the lines of communication between them. When I make trips out there, I am trying to involve each of them as much as they would like to be involved. As far as bachelorette party and other such events, I am not super picky, I just want to make sure that we can all go and have a good time, drink some champagne and enjoy one another’s company. Outside of the newsletter which I hope to update as frequently as possible, I am not sure what else to do.

I live in Chicago, my bridesmaids live in London. I WISH they were only in New York or DC.

All of mine are far away too! I’m in CA, 2 are in MN, one is in SD, one in MO and one in MD. We’re meeting up in Chicago for my bachlorette party, but it’s not required. I’m hoping most of the girls will be there, but if not, I’ll see them at the wedding!

I’m lucky enough to have most of my BMs in the same state, though not the same city. However, I chose a friend from D.C. (I’m in TX) to by my MOH. She’s being super cool about flying down for the bachelorette, and since wedding is in NY, it’s actually easier for her to meet me there when I taek my two planning trips. Other than that, the internet and things like digital photography go a long way toward getting opinions on dresses and such.

Oh, I feel your pain. The only person who lived near me was my sister, but even she was busy with her life. I delegated major tasks to her and my best friend who lives in Chicago via email, but it had to be something succinct and not to “bridey.” I asked another to handle ordering food for getting ready in the morning. Other than that, I handled everything, I kept a running to do list and updated frequently. I wouldn’t have done it any other way though, the girls were so wonderful to be around the day of, they all got along fabulously and it made the day very special for me!

I feel you on the long-distance bridal party! I’m lucky to have two living near me (only an hour away by train), but the other two live far afield — and all of my other friends are scattered from Massachussetts to Seattle! This may mean that my bachelorette party is very small or doesn’t happen at all, which is a bit of a bummer, but I hate to ask people to travel to my wedding *and* to another party.

Mine were scattered all over the country, and the only “responsibility” they had was to show up.

Luckily, with the existing state of computer technology - plus conference calls, emails, text messaging - it’s really easy to keep in touch realtime. I was my sister’s MOH, and her BMs were strung out from Ohio to Utah; she was my MOH, and she lives 1000 miles away. My other best girlfriends are about the same distance. We emailed and texted photos of dresses back and forth, did conference call shopping (with the only gal who lived near a Nordstrom trying on the dresses with all of us on the speaker phone), and overnighted DIY projects. If your girls are really invested in being part of your planning and preparation, the distance is not that much of an obstacle.

And as far as bachelorette parties and such, I was astonished at how many other friends stepped up! They all knew that my girls were too far away, and wanted to make sure that I didn’t miss out. For my sister we all flew to Las Vegas for the weekend for her bachelorette, but I got three different parties, in three different cities, and ended up realizing that I have way more good and generous friends than I had thought.

None of my bridesmaids live in the same city - when it came to picking dresses, we did a lot of emailing. Oh ok fine, I did a lot of emailing. The distance meant I didn’t have a traditional bachelorette party - instead we did it once we were all in Punta Cana together, two days before the wedding. It worked out great!

Your sister does look like B. Spears — rocking the “Mary Kate and Ashley ‘pout’” —

Funny factoid, did you know that when they make that face, they secretly are thinking/saying “prune.” lol

I’m blessed to have my girls close to home, with the exception of one - who is blessedly flying back!

Mine live super close, except for one and I worry about her not feeling as included as the others.

I totally am with you on this — my best friend left about 2 weeks after I got engaged to work on a cruise ship and has been totally incomunicado for pretty much the whole engagement. :( That said, it makes it that much more exciting knowing once she comes home the showers, parties, and WEDDING will be here!

Yeah, she totally does look like Britney! :)

I also feel your pain. Three of my bridesmaids are all from out of town :( One in the bay area, one from the bay area but moving back down to LA and the last one is in DC. My sister is my MOH but she’s super busy with optometry school. :(

Hi! I hear you - I have 9 girls and the closest one is a 3 hour drive - the farthest one is in Cali (I am in Boston) - also my mother is in Colorado. It gets difficult planning without family or close girls around, sometimes sad having to go to wedding/dress stores my yourself to look at things. Thank goodness my mom came in November for a quick planning and shopping session - I just cram everything into one weekend!

I hear ya… 4 of my 5 of my bridesmaids are in different states from me, and the one that is here is SUPER busy with a new job so I hate to ask her for help with anything at this point. My mom is also a couple hours away, but so far I’ve just been cramming everything in during her occasional visits, so we can have someone come along with us on shopping trips/vendor meetings/etc!
