About Mrs. Spring Roll

As previously stated, making our wedding favors was extremely rewarding. However, it was very time consuming. The project that took the longest? The key chain Rubik’s cubes. There were several times when I wanted to throw the cubes in the trash, or at least across the room. In the end, I am so happy that I didn’t do that, and finished the cubes.

DIY Favors: Rubik's Cube Tutorial : wedding diy favors tampa tutorial Cube

For all you brave bees, I present you with a tutorial on how I made the cubes.

Supplies needed:

- Mini key chain Rubik’s cubes (I purchased 72 Sudoko cubes from Oriental Trading)
- Avery 2” x 4” white mailing labels ($2.99 for 10 sheets at Target)
- Avery DesignPro (Free download here)
- Printer
- Trimmer or good pair of scissors
- X-Acto knife
-5  sheets of different colored card stock (I chose our wedding colors: ivory, dark pink, light pink, dark orange, and light orange; make sure the colors are easily distinguishable, as these will be the colored sides)
- Hole punch
- Clear glue (I used Elmer’s washable clear school glue)

Steps:

1. Peel stickers off cubes, so that you are left with blank cubes. If needed, use Goo Gone to remove excess sticker.

2. Open Avery DesignPro and select Design from Scratch.

3. A ‘Select Template’ box will open. Select ‘mailing labels 2×4 white’ (item #5163) and hit OK.

4. On the left side, select ‘Insert Image from File’. Insert the photo you would like to use as your Rubik’s cube photo.

5. Resize the photo to fit inside the label with space on the top and bottom; repeat until you have 3 photos inside the label.

6. Print. Make sure to select 10 copies of each (there are 10 labels per sheet; this will create 30 photos per sheet). Print sufficient amount of photos, depending on how many cubes you will make.

7. With a ruler, measure one side of the cube. Using a trimmer or a good pair of scissors, cut photo stickers according to the measurements obtained.

8. Place photo sticker on one side of the cube. Repeat for each cube.

9. Using an X-Acto knife and following the lines where the cube splits, cut the photo into 9 squares.

10. Using a hole punch, punch holes out of each piece of colored cardstock. (I punched half a sheet of each color card stock.)

11. Place a small dot of glue on each of the 9 squares on one side of a cube. (The center square has a hole that contains a screw, fill hole with glue and place dot over it.)

13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 until all sides have dots (for example, side 1 is orange, side 2 is pink, side 3 is ivory, side 4 is light orange, side 5 is light pink, and side 6 has the photo).

Miss Springroll, your favors are the best! I am so impressed by the effort you put into them.

And, I would love to see some video evidence of Mr. SR solving the Rubik’s cube–I dare him! :-)

Such a great idea! If it were me I would use two different pictures and less dots. That’s just because I’m lazy like that. You, however, are da bomb as they say.

I love this idea! Your guests are going to love these favors. I would have never thought to use the exacto, so much easier than breaking up the image! :)
