Scrapbooking for the Inexperienced and Poor

December 21st, 2008 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Caramel

I’ve never been a consistent “scrapbooker” mainly because it’s so time consuming and easily takes over my life. What starts out as a free afternoon turns into a 3AM mess of glue, cute paper and tiny scissors with no food, water or bathroom breaks. (Who’s with me on this?!)

I tried to finish our wedding scrapbook before our 1 year mark…. but I just couldn’t do it. I’m about to start it all up again, so I thought I’d share the few pages that I was able to finish.

Our cover:

For you scrapbooking newbies out there, don’t get discouraged if your first pages aren’t that fantastic–they will get better and better as you go! You can see through my examples that I got better in the end.

I feel like one of the most difficult things about scrapbooking is selecting very few pictures out of your pile of proofs. There is a very common scrapbooking style where you only use 1-2 pictures per page, but I REALLY wanted to use at least 3 without making it look too jumbled! In the end I thought “who cares? this is MY scrapbook!” hee hee

Whenever I got tired of doing our wedding pictures, I went back and did our engagement pictures.

I’m sure if you’ve experienced scrapbooking, you’ve realized that it’s a crazy expensive hobby. For those of you who like these scrapbooking kits, a GREAT place to buy them is at your local 99 cents store, or at Big Lots! I got tons of these kits for less than $2 each! I even found some Martha Stewart craft goodies for around the same price. I bought the actual scrapbook at Marshalls for about $12! You don’t always have to go to those fancy paper stores– although I really like going there for stamps and stickers!

A great resource to “cheat” your way into scrapbooking are these white embossed photo frames. You just pop one of these on top of your wedding proof and then it looks great! Plus, you can just glue/tape behind the frame and not your proof, so it won’t ruin the picture if you decide you want to take it out later. You can also stamp/color the borders to make it more colorful. I bought this at Target!

Good luck!  What are some of your favorite scrapbooking supplies?

LOL, I know what you mean about 3am with no breaks. I was working on a Blurb book last night and it turned into that, minus the mess. :)

I think I used the same book as you, at least the cover looks a lot alike.

Mine isn’t even close to as nice as yours though, I just can’t be trusted with scissors or most glue really as I’ll wind up in a huge sticky mess.

If this is inexperienced scrapbooking I don’t know what class you can put mine in. I can’t dream up these really complicated layouts like you have. I think it’s gorgeous!

It looks great, I love the bride & groom pages! :) I am with you on the 3 am no food or water breaks… that’s what happens to me when I sew. I’m glad that Mr. Taffy is here to remind me to take breaks now!
