About Mrs. Penguin

Privacy/Exposure

December 22nd, 2008 @ 5:42 pm by Mrs. Penguin

Hello from chilly Minnesota! It’s been colder here than it has been in all the years I’ve been traveling here for Christmas! Right now it’s -3 degrees outside (but with wind chill it feels like -16). Wow. I’ve been getting my exercise (OK, just this one time) by shoveling the driveway in the cutest clothes I could find at my MIL’s house. This pink pants/teal jacket/red mittens/orange shovel combo is sure to be the hot new color palette of 2009.

Anyhoo, we just picked up my brother-in-law from the airport, and he asked Mr. Peng what I was doing today. Mr. Peng said I was editing for Weddingbee today, and my BIL remarked that he doesn’t read Weddingbee anymore, because I only wrote about him once. I guess it’s funny that he’d been reading Weddingbee in the first place, hoping to catch a mention of himself! It got me to thinking about all you gals out there (like me) that blog your most intimate details of your lives.

Blogging often requires a compromise of your privacy, as well as the privacy of those around you. I love blogging and love even more to look back and have a record of my life and daily thoughts and doings at my fingertips. But often this includes showcasing pictures of my friends and loved ones, and while I love telling the world about the ins and outs of my daily life, I’m not sure all of my family does. (Although apparently, my BIL Paul wishes I’d disclose more about him!)

I guess I wrote this post for two reasons: first, to ask how your family and friends feel about compromising their privacy when they find out that you are a blogger, and second, to write one more post about my BIL, in hopes that he remains a faithful Weddingbee reader. :)

My SIL and BIL. I married into a handsome family didn’t I?

Does your family read your blog or know that you blog? If so, do they seek privacy or do they love to see themselves grace the pages of your blogs?

my sisters and friends know i blog but i don’t delve too deeply into specifics of anything unless it has something to do with me that isn’t about 1] my real private life, 2] my job [you basically get the idea that i do have one], 3] the intimate stuff in my relationship. i also don’t put the real names of my nieces and nephew as well as any of my friends’ kids.

my sisters don’t complain about what i do write about them, or even most of the pictures i plop up there but i do what i can to make sure they’re still in the right light. the only scandalous thing that’s on my blog is probably the word scandalous.

I’m in MN too — except I am trapped here all year — not just during the holidays. While I love this state from April - October, I wonder what the heck I’m doing here during the other remaining months (a.k.a. extremely long and awful winter).

My family does not read my blog, but friends occasionally stumble upon it or religiously read it.

I refrain from talking about folks unless they’re aware — otherwise, It’s gotten me in trouble a time or two!

So I can’t really relate to the post because I don’t have a blog of my own… but I did have a question for you! I’m getting married next July, and I’ve been desperately searching for affordable charcoal gray BM dresses. I saw in your picture that you had gray! Where did you get them?? They’re adorable!

That is pretty much how I look when I’m home and searching for warm clothes! Even though it is frigid and snowy I still wish I was there!

As for blogging, Mr. PN was a bit weary at first but he doesn’t mind now. He actually bugs me to “get blogging” if I haven’t posted in a day or two. My mom really enjoyed reading about the wedding process and it was a great way to stay connected from separate states.

Have fun in MN and stay warm!!

My mom reads my professional blog (http://scarjee.blogspot.com), and she used to read my personal blog until the school she works for blocked livejournal. I like it that she reads them and she doesn’t seem to mind that I share stuff, but my fiance isn’t a huge fan. He always wants to know what I’m writing about, but he refuses to go online and read it himself. And he gets a little defensive if I tell him I’m writing about him.

This is such an interesting topic that didn’t get much of a response (I think due to the holidays). I have a mix of reactions to my blogging in my life. Some love it (the people who read and comment on my daily posts, love them!), some like my mom are slow to catch on to how great it can be for keeping in touch with each other, some say to me “I don’t have time to read your blog, so I’m just never going to read it okay (I guess they don’t realize I’m not writing it so THEY will read it anyways), and some absolutely despise it and hate having it brought up in their presence.

My grandpa is one of the haters, and even though his wife reads every day, she is not allowed to mention it in front of him. I think it just disgusts him that I would share so much of my personal life with other people. Apparently it is also causing rifts in my husbands family, because people are reading, and then telling half-truths to other family members who aren’t reading, and it’s just getting very confusing.

Me, I love my blogging, no matter how other people feel about it. As long as other people keep reading and commenting positively, I’m going to keep writing.
